NOT the sort of question that's welcomed around DT. There's next to no info publicly available on the Armata. It's simply way too early to say anything. Is it superior to M1A1

Same project. The twin-barrel Koalitsiya design has been scrapped in favor of a conventional single barrel, and the chassis has been switched from Object 195 to Armata (not sure what the Object designation is).I thought the Koalitsiya had been cancelled and that a new self-propelled system based on the Armata would be developed. Or is this the same project?
The T-80 was phased out due to several factors IIRC: thirsty gas turbines and simplifying logistics with a single platform in service. I think it's still in service but replaced slowly with upgraded T-72s. I doubt there are 1500 T-80s in service.Hi
Quick question: I have read that T-80s were recently phased out, and (partially?) replaced with (modernized) T-72s.
Does someone know what's the reason for the move ? Is this going to trigger a decrease in the number of MBT in active service ?
I must admit I was quite surprised by the news. I had no illusion on the combat potential of the T-80U vs the improved T-72, but I don't see where they can find enough modernized T-72 to replace the whole fleet of T80U, which I believe was quite large ? (more than 1,500 ?).
Thanks !
Vincent
The decrease has already occurred. It occurred as part of the Serdyukov-era reforms. They are now standardizing the tank fleet around the T-72/90 platform.Does someone know what's the reason for the move ? Is this going to trigger a decrease in the number of MBT in active service ?
They're actively upgrading to the tune of ~120-150 T-72s every year, starting in iirc 2012. The upgrade is not that substantial. It's the Sosna-U sight and FCS, including thermals, digital comms, and K-5 ERA.I must admit I was quite surprised by the news. I think they're being sent into storage. Remember the extra T-72s to be upgraded, to replace T-80s, are coming out of storage. What happens to all the T-80 tanks?
A waste to scrap them. Or are they in storage?
It's a special security vehicle for the nuclear forces. Radars can be used on the ground, and Russia has quite a few. The Khrizantema-S has a radar, as do some MT-12 Rapira AT guns.Does anyone know what the green crane arm looking thing on top of this BTR (Typhoon-M counter insurgency mod) is?

EDIT: Nevermind, it's a radar.

Why on earth would an APC need a radar array?

It has been, along with the Shilka, used successfully against ground targets in the Chechen wars. That Tunguska is intense...
I looked it up and noticed its anti air craft but I am guessing that this thing can fulfill any role in a battle field
I saw that, their both workhorses in the battlefield..It has been, along with the Shilka, used successfully against ground targets in the Chechen wars.
