Air Fuel Bombs as large as "Daisy Cutter" of US Military are free-fall bombs and are huge for accomodation in war-heads of Ballistic Missiles. Especially the SRBM and MRBM category. You are confusing its size with War-heads of Missiles.

The Daisy Cutter is used to clear a large enough land for helicopter landings in rough regions (like forests and hilly regions) and elimination of big dug-in sites in mountains. Only 6 were used in Afghanistan Tora-bora region and they wreaked havok on that site!
not necessary they can be smaller the smerch rockets use them as warheads ,the prithvi uses 500-1000kgs warhead.the russian tos i beleive fires two different rockets simultaneously carrying wo types of chemicals which explode providing a very similiar effect.:coffee

Is the Cruise missile going to be deployed in the wargames? and is the JF17 taking part, Last i heard Russia refused to provide RD-33 engines for a sale to pakistan, because india got jealous and pleaded with the russians not to provide any arms for Pakistan. What is the Engine that the Pak JF-17s going to use? Volvo? RollsRoyce? chinese stuff?

Re: Pakistan Airforce News and Discussions

I doubt Cruise missile will show up...98% chances r aginst it.

JF-17 prototype ais taking place.

China is said to have about 100 RD-93 engines. By the time PAC & CAC produce 100 jets (50-50 respectively) China & Pak would have reverse engineered the engine probably besides so far there has been no official reports on engine problems from either China or Pak & Project has entered the production phase. If there were problems Pak & China wont risk investing so much money on production & its facility.

Re: Pakistan Airforce News and Discussions

Why doesnt Pakistan buy the Mirage 2009 from Dassault. I know they were asking Pak $100 million a place for the Mirage2005 in 1994.But the UAE got them for $45 per plane, that doesnt include weapon systems or support though. The M2009 has a lot of Rafale tech (apache cruise missiles) in it and buying the jet gives PAF intercompatibility with the UAE airforce which also flies the Block60 F16s. PAF MirageV and lll are going to need a replacement soon...:coffee

Pakistan Air Force to Hold War Games
By AGENCE FRANCE-PRESSE, RAWALPINDi

Pakistan’s air force said Thursday it would launch a month of war games at the weekend, its first for ten years, despite ongoing peace talks with nuclear rival India.

The entire fleet, including U.S.-made F-16s, French Mirage fighter aircraft and Chinese-built jets, will take part in the exercise, said Pakistan Air Force Deputy Chief of Operations, Shahzad Chaudhry.

â€This is closest to war you can get in peacetime,†Chaudhry said. “It is a huge and major exercise, all planes, all radars and all ground assets are being mobilized during the games.â€

Chaudhry said that during the exercise Pakistan air force aircraft will fly 8,200 operational sorties, the highest ever.

Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz will witness the games at the initial stage while President Pervez Musharraf will inspect the operations in the concluding phase.

The war games were announced as India’s top diplomat held talks with his Pakistani counterpart in Islamabad to review the slow-moving peace process between the two countries.
India and Pakistan have fought three wars since departing colonial power Britain split the subcontinent in 1947, and came close to a fourth in 2002.

Pakistan to procure 75 F-16 jets from US:

Islamabad: Pakistan is engaged in talks with the US to get 75 F-16 aircraft, a senior air force official said Thursday.

Pakistan's Air Force Deputy Chief of Air Staff (Operations) Air Vice Marshal Shahzad Chaudhry said the country was holding talks with the US on cooperation in the defence sector, reports Online news agency.

"We are hopeful of acquiring 75 F-16 jets from US. The US will give two F-16 jets free of charge, and these will be acquired in December," Chaudhry said at a press conference.

Eight C-130 planes would also be acquired from America soon, he said.

Chaudhry said the JF-17 thunder manufactured with the cooperation of China would be included in the Pakistan Air Force fleet by 2007.

He asserted that while Pakistan wanted peace and stability in the region, "we want to fortify ourselves in every aspect."

To a question, Chaudhry said the Pakistan Air Force would also initiate joint exercises with Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Turkey.

Stating that American forces had quit the Jacobabad airbase, the official claimed that no airbase of Pakistan Air Force was in US control.

More great news!!!!

Pakistan to upgrade F-16s from 2006:

Islamabad: Pakistan will upgrade its F-16 combat aircraft from early next year, a military official said Thursday.

"We will upgrade our F-16s under a programme called Mid Life Updates (MLUs) at our air bases," Air Vice Marshal Shehzad Hassan Chaudhry told DPA.

He said the process would commence early next year, adding that the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) will buy spares from the US and other sources for the purpose.

Pakistani experts are already overhauling F-100 engines of the multi-role jets at the country's premier aeronautical complex, some 70 km northwest of here.

"We are now capable of completely upgrading the jets indigenously," said Chaudhry, who is also the deputy chief of the PAF operations department.

He said commencement of the programme would coincide with the arrival of two more F-16s which the US is to deliver free of cost to the PAF in December.

"I recently headed a team of experts to the US to discuss modalities for early delivery of the two planes, being currently flown by the US Air Force," the official said.

He said Pakistani experts have asked the US to provide at least 75 F-16s. The exact configuration, cost and other details are being negotiated between the two countries.

:cheers

When are the C-130s being delivered? Isnt 3 years an awfully long time for a bunch of old used Aussie C-130s to be retrofitted , upgraded and shipped to Pakistan? This deal was announced in 2002.PAF needs to upgrade its entire Transport fleet with more modern stuff. The other C-130s it uses currently were bought in the early 60's. Why cant it buy some C-130J stretch or M400 (EADS) ?

Pakistan Air Force to Hold War Games

Pakistan’s air force said Thursday it would launch a month of war games at the weekend, its first for ten years, despite ongoing peace talks with nuclear rival India.

Pak-US deal on 75 F-16s soon: PAF
By Shakil Shaikh
Link http://jang.com.pk/thenews/
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday expressed the hope that the United States would soon complete procedures for delivery of 75 multi-role F-16 aircraft of advanced version, while two F-16s to be provided free of cost would not be part of the original demand for 75 planes.

Confirming this, Deputy Chief of Air Staff Air Vice Marshal Shahzad Aslam Chaudhry said the deal for provision of F-16 aircraft was very much there. He was answering questions by journalists, who attended a briefing at the Air Headquarters on Hi-Mark exercise. He said Pakistan would acquire F-16s of an advanced version though the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) always keeps its options open to buy other aircraft. He said that as a goodwill gesture, two F-16s would reach Pakistan by December this year, as these were the two out of four aircraft already available with the Americans.

Air Vice Marshal Shahzad Aslam expressed his optimism that the US would provide the aircraft as required by Pakistan to beef up its fleet of combat aircraft. He, however, rated F-16s as the best option given the existing environment and said that there is no confusion on the capability of F-16 jets.

The PAF officer said the delivery of C-130 cargo aircraft was delayed due to some technical reasons, as these were to be overhauled prior to the delivery. "We are monitoring the daily progress of the overhaul work and these will be delivered to us as soon as the necessary repair work is accomplished, as these were old C-130s already parked for some time."

Responding to another query, he said, the aircraft being manufactured by Pakistan with the help of China — JF-17 Thunder — would be inducted in the PAF fleet in 2007 as the work on its prototype is in progress at a fast pace. "We don’t foresee any impediment in its production path," he said, adding that China had already struck a deal for supply of engines while the aircraft would be fitted with Chinese made avionics. After their induction in the PAF, the requirement of the country’s air force in the mid-tech aircraft would be accomplished, he said.

The PAF officer said it is decision of the government to buy a particular aircraft as per copy of F-22 costs more than $200 million, and JSF plane costs nearly $100 million. He said the PAF needs a mix of super-duper hi-tech, mid-tech aircraft, as it is a wrong impression that F-16 has only symbolic value. On the possibility of accidents during peacetime exercise, he hoped there would be no accident and the missions with more than 8,000 sorties to be flown would be accomplished without an accident. "We cannot afford even one or two accidents."

Deal does look more like 75 new Block-52 though there were rumors of 55 just a short while ago. The deal should had been finalized by now but Pakistan demanded AESA and the AIM-9X and US hesitated. Looks like US may have approved if not all but most of Pakistan's requests.

The AIM-9X has been approved and was never a problem. I think you meant the AIM-120 BVRAAM . But i agree with you, the deal is taking way too long .

No, even Aim-9X was a problem according to my former colleagues in Lockheed Martin. Does look like that it has been approved now. What I know is that AIM-120 will be approved too.

Re: Pakistan Airforce News and Discussions

Yeah, buying a Block52 F-16 without the AIM-120 would be a total waste. Is Pakistan asking for JDAMS too? with bunker busters.....it would be close to Israel's SUFA.

Yes GBUs were on the list too. By December, we should know the results.

Any news on the AWACS front? i know the Pakistanis were buying the Eireye from Sweden. We offered them Hawkeyes..7 i believe in the 80's. The Paks should have taken that offer back then.Instead they stuck on the Sentrys and missed out.
