Post 1 of 3: Reactions to Russia’s ongoing escalation towards Ukraine
1. An extract of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s address to Ukraine:
2. Great speech of a President of a country that is about to lose a war with Russia. Long time Russian invasion skeptics are now silenced. With Russian troops in Donetsk and Luhansk, the invasion of Ukraine is likely to be inevitable and it will occur very soon.
3. President Biden spoke with President Macron and Chancellor Scholz about Russia’s ongoing escalation towards Ukraine. The leaders condemned President Putin’s decision to recognize the so-called DNR and LNR regions of Ukraine as “independent.” Concurrently, President Biden has authorized the movement of U.S. forces and equipment as a defensive measure to help strengthen Baltic allies in NATO.
5. Singapore has always been pretty consistent when it comes to big powers running over the sovereignty of small powers; including speaking up on Crimea in 2014 On 22 Feb 2022, Singapore’s MFA said:
6. Europe faces its greatest security situation yet. The ability of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to meet with leaders from other countries and to hear their perspectives at Munich Security Conference (MSC) in Germany is invaluable. Wolfgang Ischinger, the conference chair said this is in his opinion the most important gathering of MSC ever. It’s not just that crises have become more intense/numerous. He reiterated theme of apathy and need to “unlearn helplessness”. The days of being stupid and continued under-investing in armies and air forces for Europe is over.
1. An extract of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s address to Ukraine:
“Dear people, we and our state do not have time for long lectures on history. I will not talk about the past. I will talk about current realities and our future. Ukraine is within its internationally recognized borders, and will remain so. Despite any statements and actions of the Russian Federation… Tonight we held a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council. Ukraine qualifies the latest actions of the Russian Federation as a violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of our state…
…In accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, Ukraine reserves the right for individual and collective self-defense. We can distinguish between the provocations and the offensive of the aggressor's troops. Truth is on our side. we will never hide the truth from you. As soon as we see a change in the situation, as soon as we see an increase in risk, you will know all about it. There is currently no reason for chaotic actions. We will do everything to make it so in the future. We are committed to a peaceful and diplomatic path, and we will follow it. We are on our land. We are not afraid of anything or anyone. We owe nothing to anyone, and we will not give anything to anyone. We are sure of this, because now it is not February 2014, but February 2022. Our country is different, our army is different. The only goal is peace in Ukraine. Glory to Ukraine.”

4. Japan, participated in sanctions against Russia following the annexation of Crimea in 2014 and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida promised full commitment to the U.S. in the event Moscow’s invades Ukraine. Japan said it stood ready to join the G7 nations in slapping sanctions on Russia — as a first step, Japan imposes individual sanctions on Russia and bans the issuance of Russian bonds, while Germany halted the Nord Stream 2 pipeline project. Russia's state owned energy company Gazprom started working on "offshore" gas pipelines which would run under the Baltic Sea and connect Russia directly with importing countries. Nord Stream 2 was being built under this program. This pipeline would have connected Russia directly with Germany via Baltic Sea.5. “Singapore is gravely concerned at the escalation of tensions at the Ukraine-Russia border & the Russian decision to recognise 2 breakaway Ukrainian regions. The sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity of Ukraine must be respected.
All parties concerned should continue to pursue dialogue, including diplomatic means, towards a peaceful settlement of the dispute, in accordance with international law, and avoid action that will further raise tensions in the region.”
