Very true - you can write the Romanian frigate off however, she's the ex-Coventry and basically is a large and expensive to run OPV in her current fitout.

I did spot something that looked pretty large with what looked like a twin arm launcher at the front, wasn't sure of the type or nation.

I am sure both where perry class frigates . What also suprised me is how they were commenting on how good the T22 frigate was cutting through the waves.

Twin Arm Launcher? bit hard to say, not many left in the World, maybe some of older Russian/Chinese design. The only Ships left with the US MK 26 are the ex Kidd Class of the Taiwanese Navy, nothing in NATO.

I have some pictures of that ship from my final deployment. Oversized OPV is right.

I thought they'd converted her to a RO-RO ferry at first glance, there's so much missing in terms of sensors and weapons.

Very very expensive to run OPV indeed.

I think that was the Russian frigate a krivak ll.
I'm not quite sure which part of the film they were referring to. There is one part with a Daring leading ships in Line(look like Perrys) and another part where you had 3 ships sailing abreast of each other, with a Daring at the bottom a Russian Ship(huge deck mounted SSMs a give away) in the middle and a ship I could not identify at the top.

MoD plans to build Royal Navy frigates back on as three shipbuilders put in bids

While not a reliable source by any means, the Sun has reported that Atlas Elektronik UK has joined Cammel Laird and Babcocks as a third contender for the T31 project. It's anyone's guess as to what design they will put forward, as presumably their main interest is in the various electronic systems.
Everyone has the story now.

Here are the top 3 contenders for the Royal Navy’s new budget frigate

I'm also fascinated to see what design Atlas Elektronik is putting forward.

EDIT: I found this comment in the UK defence journal from June - "Really strange that Atlas Elektronik UK’s Meko 200 offer has had zero comment anywhere in the media."

Arrowhead 140 or Leander - Which would be the best Type 31e Frigate?Arrowhead 140 or Leander - Which would be the best Type 31e Frigate?

So, maybe a version of the Meko A-200? The four ships of the Valour class cost an approximate total of $670M USD in 2007 dollars.
I can't wait to see their proposal.

On a very simplistic and shallow basis, if Arrowhead 140 is available at the price point, shut up and take my money. Bigger hull, brings too many benefits to the table to ignore. Better sea keeping, better stability margins for the same weapons and sensor fit and more room for upgrades. Also, more internal volume, easier to move around in potentially and easier to maintain.

That article has been over taken by events however - it references building in Appledore - which is slated for closure in the build plans.

Amen, brother. If they can build five Arrowhead 140s for £1.25 billion that's the deal of the century as far as I'm concerned.

Since the winner of the T31e contract is likely to be looked at by the NZ MOD as a possible ANZAC replacement, I'm doubly hopeful the 140 gets the nod.

The difficultly might be that it approaches the size (and therefore in the minds of some the capability) of the T26; the RN and MoD might be leery of some politician taking the line that they can cut down further on the number of T26 and substitute more T31.

Atlas Elektronik is a subsidiary of TKMS, so Atlas Elektronik UK is presumably acting as, in effect, a UK-based agent for its parent company & therefore TKMS designs, & providing a vehicle for putting IP into the UK, in line with the requirement.

The MEKO A200 seems to be a rather good fit for the published requirement, & TKMS has shown itself to be capable of integrating a variety of weapons, sensors, etc. onto its ships.

I prefer this version of the data, but only because it comes directly from UK PLC, not some jurno hack !

Three shipbuilding teams shortlisted to build new warships in UK

The 'inclusion' of Atlas is strange IMHO.

In layman's terms it sounds like what sheep farmers do when they have a lamb that has died & a mother whose produced x3 lambs. They strip the hide off the dead lamb & make one of the x3 lambs from the other sheep wear it for a week / 10 days, till the mother of the dead lamb bonds & accepts it for her own.

Bizarre & extreme analogy, but it sounds like UK PLC have dangled that £5m design contract in the hope to get others to participate, with Atlas /TKMS being the lamb wearing the dead skin.

Everyone in Whitehall is gonna have to be on their 'A' game when these contracts come in, as I don't see the ships being built for the contract at cost per ship prices. The ships will be 'spec'd' to match the contract, but any changes that are asked for will have to be paid for. Something UK PLC doesn't like, when they change their minds 3 years into a contract & the supplier demands more money to meet the change.

Cats & traps anyone ??

The biggest problem I can see with the Meko A-200 design fitting the requirements is it's lack of mission bay/space. The mission bays are such a big feature of the Arrowhead 140 and Leander designs.

As you can see from the pic below, when the Valour class are tasked for boarding operations they have to remove their Exocet SSMs in order to have space to fit extra boats. Not ideal. I'm interested to see their mission bay design solution.

I would hope the decision is made very soon because it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that Jeremy Corbin and his left wing ideology will be your PM within months due to the appalling knot the Conservatives have tied themselves into surrounding BREXIT. Surely the PM won’t survive and an election will be called, if that happens what for the T 31?

...& now that the news is global, here's an American spin on things...

(I personally like the side-by-side comparison document at the bottom of the article)

If Corbyn gets in I wouldn't be surprised to find lots of UK kit on the market.
