Pakistan to Pay $78 mn for 30yr-old Frigate
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will be paying the United States atleast $78 million to acquire a 30 year old Oliver Perry class frigate.
The first 30 year old frigate is expected to sail for Karachi by the end of this year as Pakistan continues to negotiate for acquiring five more Oliver Perry class frigates from the US.
Sources in Pakistan Navy told DawnNews that the 30 year old frigate, USS McInerney, was put on the US Navy’s inactivation list September last year. It will fly the Pakistani flag after retirement in September this year.
Pakistani sources said that frigate is a gift from US and will fly Pakistani flag as cost-efficient “hot-transfer” but US Defence Security Department in a notification to Congress said the frigate and its associated equipment, parts and logistical support will be worth atleast $78 millions.
This transfer would be done through the US International Programs Office and its foreign military sales department.
Once transferred to Pakistan, the ship will also join Combined Task Force aimed at fighting sea pirates in the troubled waters of the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean.
USS McInerney’s onboard refurbishment includes anti-submarine missile defences, surface-to-surface missiles, other advance weaponry systems and with helicopter deck landing facilities.—DawnNews

Does it make any operational sense for P.N. to acquire FIVE 30yr old frigates instead of steering & channeling funds towards other more recent platforms?

At the very least re-installing STIR and the one-armed bandit. They also need to do a lot of testing and repairing all the GMLS equipment that has been in layup for the last 5 or so years.
isn't mk13 also getting phased out in the USN? maybe they will put something newer?

Yes, SM1 has been phased out by the USN. The class of FFGs will also be phased out as the new LCS ships are built. LCS will have SeaRam. I am sure if there were a WWIII anytime soon before the FFGs were struck, I would assume SeaRam would be purchased and installed on the FFGs as quickly as possible. Nothing less than a WWIII. Otherwise the USN would continue on their plan for new LCS.
It was phased out years ago but the STIR equipment and the "arm" was removed but all the internal equipment was left in place.
If Pakistan wants to add newer equipment then it is up to them.
LCS-1 has RAM and LCS-2 has SeaRam.

Pak Navy tests its strike capability in Arabian Sea.
KARACHI : Pakistan Navy Fleet on Friday tested its fire power in the North Arabian Sea to assess the lethality, precision and efficacy of its weapon systems.
This was announced in an ISPR (Navy) press release issued here on Friday.
It said that Admiral Noman Bashir, Chief of the Naval Staff, witnessed the event.
This included successful firing of a variety of missiles and torpedoes from PN ships, submarines and aircraft.
Commander Pakistan Fleet, Vice Admiral Tanveer Faiz, was overall Incharge of the firing serial.
Chief of the Naval Staff on this occasion expressed his complete satisfaction on the operational readiness of PN fleet and commended the officers and men for their commitment and professionalism.
The weapons tested included newly inducted weapon systems, such as anti surface missiles from F-22 P Frigate and air-to-surface missiles from P3C aircraft.
An important feature of the event was firing of subsurface-to-surface missiles from Agosta 90B submarines. The target set was successfully engaged.
Earlier, the weapons firing zone spread over hundreds of miles at sea was cleared of all merchant ships and fishing craft through extensive range clearance operations to ensure safe conduct of the activity.
While reassuring Pakistan Navy's commitment of defending the motherland, this strike capability would also send a message of deterrence to anyone harbouring nefarious designs against Pakistan, the ISPR (Navy) press release added.

Yes, it appears they shot a surface to surface missile from one of their new F22P frigates against one of their old, decommissioned Type 12 frigates.

Pakistan to Acquire US Navy Warship
WASHINGTON: Pakistan and the US have signed a $65 million contract on Tuesday for the ‘hot transfer’ of naval frigate USS McInerney, enabling the Pakistan Navy to take over the vessel by August 31.
The frigate will be commissioned as PNS Alamgir on August 31 in the United States “and a comprehensive refurbishment of the ship, in line with Pakistan Navy’s requirements, will be undertaken under the supervision of US Navy”.
Upon completion of its refurbishment work by January 2011, the PNS Alamgir will then sail to Pakistan to join the Pakistan naval fleet. At Tuesday’s ceremony, officials from Pakistan Navy and the Pakistan embassy in Washington represented Pakistan, while senior ranking US Navy officials represented the US government.
Pakistani embassy officials described the occasion, as “a major “milestone” towards strengthening the wide-ranging Pakistan-US relationship”. APP

dose this mean that the T-21 will finally be put out to pasture. A remarkable length of commission the remaining Type 21 have after being known to be an inadequate design for the RN.

November 4, 2010 – Pakistan Navy has inducted a Raytheon Hawker 850XP Information Warfare (IW) aircraft and four new Chinese-built Harbin Z-9EC Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) helicopters. These flying machines will work with Sword Class Chinese-built F-22P frigates of Pakistan Navy. The induction ceremony was held at Pakistan Navy base and headquarter of naval aviation PNS Mehran in Karachi.
The Hawker 850XP in news video footage is in executive jet livery and appears to be sporting USA aircraft registration N982XP. Most probably it will receive Pakistan Navy markings and serial number and some externally visible fittings like antennas for Information Warfare missions sometime later.

Which missile and at what range?
C-802 SSM, 120 kilometers. You could have googled this yourself with two quick Wiki searches...
No one I know knows. The FFGs could have nothing done, have the Mk13 launcher arm added along with STIR, or get the upgrade the US Navy was going to do, add SeaRam to the CiWS with harpoon racks and missiles added forward of the bridge... We will soon see....
The FFGs will make good ASW frigates with a modern SeaRam package for anti air self defence, but others wish for the obsolete SM-1 area defence anti air capability...
As far as i know the biggest problem with the type 21s is not the weaponry but the superstucture itself.
i think the pakisan navy is better off without the type 21
