Considering the subs already in slipway on Russian shipyards, then if Russian it's more likely will be Kilo's..thus in line with the offered on the intial export credits from Russia.
However no 209's (changbogo) now in the slipways of Souh Koreans shipyards (or are they ??)...the only submarines in the building process on south korea only the 214, Will be that if South Korean wins...then they willing to let some of the 214 on the current building program for their own navy be trasnfered to us ???
And will the Germans let south korean sold 214 to us, considering they fail to sell 214 from their own shipyard to us..???
Well USD 700 mio budget for two submarines seems (from previous announcement)still in line with the price of advance Kilo's or 214.

Quite interesting if as the articles said whatever happen the ministry still expect time schedulle of 2012-2013 as the time the new subs join active fleet.

LPD Banjarmasin will be ready at last.

Attach is the photo of LPD Banjarmasin from Angkasa readers community. This LPD build by PT. PAL underlicense from South Korea, with some modifications resulted slightly longger dimenssions of 125 m vs 122 m on South Korean's build LPD. The Modifications mostly on Electronics (the LPD' build by PAL will be fitted by command fuctions) and larger guns (Still being decided on choices of 100 mm French or 57 mm Bofors) against 40 mm Bofors on South Korean build sister LPD.

This LPD schedulled be turn to the Navy in end of November after several delays from original schedulle of June this year. PAL hopes that this 'value for money' LPD's will eventually replaced all 20 South Korean and East German build LST now in the inventory of Military Sea Lift Command (Kolinlamil).

A cat of 30 knots speed like te Ro-Ro Ferry type ship made by Austal chartered by the US Marines would be ideal for Indonesian Navy and for civilian use. Indonesia is an Islands Nation, so these ships should able to serve effectively in peace time or in war time.
A ship that able to carry passenger or soldeirs seated in an airplane type seats, and at the same time able to carry other war vehicles.
A ship that can be converted into floating hospital or refugees camps within a short period of time. Rolled in trailers with equipments for ER, another trailers equipped with labs, a trailer as medical supplies storage, or a trailer with complete kitchen's equipment, a refrigerated trailer for food storage, etc..
However, a harbour for these Ro-Ro ships have to be build in every strategic located island. An island that big enough to build also airstrip for jet fighters, recon planes and cargo planes. Also this island are the home bases for hundreds of fast patrol ships.

A Navy with minimum of Subs,Frigate, LPD but hundreds of Ro-Ro Ferries and hundreds of fast patrol ships and hundred of "stationary carriers" scattered around the Nation. A unique Navy, but again Indonesia is a unique Island Nation to begin with.

Our main staple is rice, so give us plenty of rice, forget the french fries, hamburgers, pancakes, potatoes or pizza. You will see a lot of Indonesian smiling. In other words. be practical, look around you what is best for you.

The KRI Teluk Bayur 502 (ex-LST 616) has been decommissioned on 30 October. Its from the same class as 501 KRI Teluk Langsa (ex-USS Solano County (LST-1128)) and 503 KRI Teluk Amboina. It was in use since 1961.

LPD and Cat HSV should be the future "work horse" and the "backbone" of TNI AL.
After all Indonesia is an Island Nation of 10,000 islands,scattered between Asia and Australia.
Cat HSVs fitted with helicopter platform and ramp for Amphibious Assault Vehicles will be the best bet for the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL). The Cat HSVs ability to be converted into various mode based on various needs in a short of period of time is a big plus.
Rolled in trailers equipped with Medical instruments/equipments, Medical supplies and trailers that are used as ER,.... the ship now is a Floating Hospitals.
Rolled in trailers equipped with big TV screens, and another trailer as a kitchen,now the ship is a floating R & R.
Rolled in trailers equipped with showers or bathtubs, cafetaria or sleeping quarters, now the ship is a "Mother Ship" for High Speed Patrol ships.
If the CatHSV is equipped with "lifts" to lift up High Speed Patrol ships from the water,now the ship is a floating repair facilities. Or a " Mobile Dry Dock" for small vessels.

Cat HSV can be considered as the future LST and more. Speed of 13 knots upgraded to 30 knots ! Be able to carry Amphbiious Assault Vehicles and Assault Helicopters plus carrying a battalion of soldeirs at the same time is something that never can be imagined 10 years ago.

HSVs are quite expensive, i think the Hospitalship KRI 990 and the 4 new LPDs are more than enough, together with the 14 Frosch I and 6 Semangka Class LSTs.. The last 2 LPDs are also build by PT PAL

Yes expensive. But may be if scaled down, such as..instead of aluminum hull, may be steel hull to be used. Speed lowered to 25 knots - 30 knots instead of 45 knots. So that diesel electric as the main propulsion instead of water-jets with big diesel engines. Savings in fuel cost. Or maybe instead of diesel electric, to generate electric power, high powered steam turbine could be used.

Also. Cat HSVs, are suitable for civilian use. During peace time, these ships can be chartered out to be used as a regular liner between major ports in Indonesia, carrying passengers and cargo (Ro-Ro). I understand that LPD are designed primary as military use.

Eventhough the Cat HSVs are expensive to build, but being able to be chartered out to Shipping Co. will produce some revenue to compensate the high price. Also it will serve not only for defence use but also for the benefit of the people. The ability to be used as military and civilian use alone will be justified in purchasing these ships eventhough with a higher price tag.

TNI ( Tentara Nasional Indonesia-- Indonesian Defence Force) belong to the people of Indonesia. Therefore, serving the people by providing mass transportation between the Islands by ships built and paid for to defend the Nation ( Navy ships) is a natural option.

Procurement effort worth $ 634.8 million to support Indonesia's border security

The Defense Minister of Indonesia, Purnomo Yusgiantoro, today confirmed that the Ministry is following the plan to increase the Navy's (Indonesian: Indonesian National Army Navy, TNI-AL) inventory of patrol vessels by the purchase of 96 Additionally boats. Indonesia's 2nd Subs Nanggala Went to South Korea

Below the picture from Detik on TNI AL 2nd submarine KRI Nenggala on the proses docking with a South Korean dock ships. The 209 will have a complete overhaul in south korea with some sources says will then have same standard as South Korean 209 (changbogo class). With her sister Tjakra already have simmilar overhaul, this move seems show strong indications that the planned 3rd and 4th subs could be Changbogo class (improved 209).

On other event, the ministry sources also says that they want the 3rd and the 4th subs will be build locally by PT. PAL dockyards in Surabaya. So far only South Korean that already show strong interest to help PAL in local subs building capacity.
Unconfirmed sources says that the planned USD 700 mio budgets for the 3rd and 4th subs already included installations on subs manufacturing facility in Surabaya.

The SAN ANTONIO (LPD 17) Class of amphibious transport dock ships represents the Navy and Marine Corps' future in amphibious warfare, and is one of the cornerstones in the strategic plan known as "Forward...from the sea". The San Antonio class will be the first designed, from the keel up, to execute Operational Maneuver From The Sea [OMFTS] and Ship to Objective Maneuver. It is designed to support embarking, transporting, and landing elements of a Marine landing force in an assault by helicopters, landing craft, amphibious vehicles, and by a combination of these methods to conduct primary amphibious warfare missions.

Well certaintly Makasar is no way near that capacity...but hey I even wondered if somewhere in this region outside Japan, someone else can afford that kind of capacity on an LPD. Even South Korean Dokdo is not as complete as this one :)

Makasar is less than half the tonnage of San Antonio, as well as being far more modestly equipped & more cheaply built. Dokdo is also smaller than San Antonio, although not by as much, & conceptually rather different.

Agree Swerve, however on Dokdo as much as she's a cappable amphibious assets and of course have different concept and usage than San Antonio, still from the info that i can get, she's not build as excessive as San Antonio.
Besides, can anybody else really can afford LPD with San Antonio specs...or if they can afford that , would anybody outside US really want that ???

Only US and Us alone can afford to build and maintain such LPD as big as everything else in Texas. There is high price to pay to stay on top. The Military Industrial Complex will keep it at the top at any price !!!. Poor US Taxpayers !

There are other countries with LPD, LPH and LHD's bigger then or the same size as the San Antonio class. Do you want examples?

Hi Steve, I know your comment is for Joe Ragan, however since his comment also to repply mine, perhaps some clarifications needed.

We're not only just talking about Big (since Dokdo and San Antonio was in close simmilar range) but more the extensiveness on San Antonio specs.
I Think the San Antonio extensiveness already being talked much in media and internet and many Americans hate her due to the fact because she was so expensive and extensives build, the cost is so high that the even the US has to limit the number to be build.

Now the questions perhaps was.how extensive an amphibious assets (LSD,LPS, LPH,LHD) should be ???
San Antonio perhaps should be made as bentchmark on extensiveness..
If we compared to an MPV ( i know it's a far fetched...but it's people carrier anyway):D...There's an Toyota small entry level MPV in SEA called Toyota Avanza in lower extreme and in higher extreme we have Big Premium MPV like Toyota Alphard...
In sense Makasar can be catagorize as Toyota Avanza..and San Antonio 's Toyota Alphard..
Both can take a more or less same number of people..but Avanza like Makasar clearly not build for long range blue navy cruises..while San Antonio like an premium MPV of Toyota Alphard is very capable people carriers with can bring the occupants in longger ranges cruises with much better comfort.

However like the Amphibious assets between Makasar and San Antonio or between MPV Toyota Avanza and Toyota Alphard, there's quite a range of amphiobious assets (or MPV) that have more in line capabilities with San Antonio (or Toyota Alphard) that 're less expensive and less extensive to be build.
Dutch's Roterdam, Spain's Galicia, South Korean's Dokdo belong to that catagory. They're clearly as amphibious assests more capable than Makasar..and near the capability offered by San Antonio as Amphiobious assets..but with prices (if the data that already circullar on San Antonio's costs correct) significantly below San Antonio.

That's what the questions is..do anybody outside US really need an extensives LPD like's San Antonio..?? or even if they can afford her...would anybody outside US willing to invest such amount of money for an LPD..??
And we believe ( at leats me and Joe Ragan based on his comments)..nobody else outside US willing to invest that kind of money for an LPD.

Indonesian Navy will replace the "Tall Ship" KRI Dewarutji

JAKARTA - TNI Angkatan Laut (TNI-AL) will modernize the equipment of war in 2010. Including one of them is tall sailing ship KRI Dewaruci which is owned by legendary trainer ship TNI AL, will also be replaced.

"To KRI Dewaruci we also think about his successor in 2010," said Navy Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Agus Suhartono in a news conference at TNI AL, Cilangkap, East Jakarta, Tuesday (29/12).

KRI Dewaruci a ship for cadets training academy TNI AL. Many times the ship has been used since 1957 has been around the world in diplomatic missions and exercises.
