Russian Navy Discussions and Updates

Thanks for the info.

Sounds like they probably fixed the engine problems mentioned by the old Global Security info if the Greeks went on to buy some (?).

Anyway, absolutely great idea for a landing craft...

Well folks, I hope this Russian article leaves no doubt what kind of carriers they want to have!
http://www.izvestia.ru/armia2/article3121516/?print

It just repeats that: they won't be American style, will have not only aircraft but also AD & AShMs, and be nuclear powered. If they start building them now, the result will come by 2013-2015.
So, if it takes 4-6 years to build 1 or 2 of them (assuming they are built at 2 yards simultaneously), it translates to 16-18 years before 5-6 new carriers are in comission.

Meh. More rumors.

По мнению опрошенных "Известиями" экспертов,
From your article. So the description in it isn't official. It's the opinions of some nameless experts. Maybe they're knowledgeable people with inside information that know exactly what they're talking about. Or maybe they're just talking out of their ass. We're right back where we started. Either they will be aircraft carrying cruisers or they won't be.

True, but if they are going to be just floating airbases, by how much will such CVNs/CBGs be more expensive- besides requiring additional escorts with AShMs and ASW weapons?
From Russian news articles:
NF & Pac. Fleet ships will exercise together in the Indian Ocean before the end of the year. After Venezuela, NF ships will go to the IO; the Pac. Fleet ships will leave for the IO in November.

For those who don't read Russian-

It's interesting what route they'll take from the Carribean- via the Panama Canal and Pacific or around Africa?

Those exercises will be incomplete without Tu-22/95/160s!

Regarding operations of SSBNs in the Arctic, how safe are they going to be from detection in ice-free summer months?

Perhaps they'll have to stay closer to shore and/or operate in the Southern Ocean!

What does that article say? It has diagrams of the kutznetsov and looks an interesting read.

I hope they are planning for a carrier in the 80000 ton range, instead of the 60+ like the kutznetsov nor 100 000 tons like the Americans.

And regarding the NF moving to IO, I belive they will take the Mediterranean as its shorter and safer with plenty of friendly countries to replenish supplies along the way. Also hopefully the Indian Navy joint in the exercises.

The article praises carrier/cruiser hybrid concept in the Soviet/Russian naval context. It pushes the idea that future carriers should & will continue to be also cruisers capable of operating with land and space based assets such as AD, aviation & BMD. I wish they had an English version of the paper.
If they are going via the Med. again, why did they go there 1st before Venezuela? IMO, it would make sense to stop in Angola, SA & Mozambique this time.

The Kuznetsov is reported to deploy with escorts to the mediteranian, where they will do manouvers with ships from the black sea.

Kuznetsov will probably be joined by Udaloy I class "Adm Levchenko" and "Severomorsk", just like the last time. The ship(s) from the black sea is probably the Slava class "Moskva".

At least 20 dead in a wrecked Russian nuclear submarine
http://www.focus-fen.net/index.php?id=n158825

"Сегодня, 8 ноября, на одной из атомных подводных лодок Тихоокеанского флота при проведении ходовых испытаний [duting sea trilas] в результате несанкционированного срабатывания системы пожаротушения [as a result of spontaneous firefighting system went off] погибли более 20 человек. Среди погибших рабочие судостроительного предприятия и военнослужащие", [20 killed- sailors and shipyard personnel]..
В конце октября представители Амурского судостроительного завода сообщали, что в Приморье начались ходовые испытания атомной подводной лодки "Нерпа" (проект 971 "Щука-Б", по классификации НАТО "Akula") [At the end of October the Amur shipyard has announced sea trials of Nerpa, project 971, "Akula"] .

This is not good news, especially for India- if that's were that sub was going to be! I hope it's not more than that- otherwise they better have a substitute!

any idea what class of Sub it is it mentions Russian Navy crew as well as civilians dose that mean it could be a vessel on sea trials that means that if it could be Yury D, Nerpa, the Typhoon Bucklava trial vessel can't think of any other candidates of SSN or SSBN, SSGN which could be a candidate.

very sad the frequency of Russian sub accidents

Lets keep the news and speculation about the Russian sub accident in the thread dedicated to it.

Gorshkov price is something lik 4 b$ and it is real price of it. but when they signed a deal Russian set the price of 850 m$ - and everybody knew that it is too LOW. A question is who did this and what he was expecting to get or to do?? (I think the answer is CORRUPTION)
But this situation can hardly damage Russian-Indian military relations.

It can and already has damaged Russo-Indian military cooperation. None the less it can very well be expected that India will be willing to (eventually) pay the price hike simply because they have already ordered the fighters for it, and ultimately need the carrier, as it figures prominently in their future plans. I suspect that an intermediate sum of money will be found, with the deal ending up partially subsidized by our government for political reasons.

Damm, this sub escaped my radar. Russian names are hard to pronounce and considering the attention given to the Borei, Akula 2, Kilo and Lada's, this 1 escaped me.

I've been reading about this sub, and it sound very good. It combines the best of the Akula class and the Alfa class submarines to make a new more stealthy and deadly multipurpose sub, the Severodvinsk class.

It is supposed to be even quiter than the Akula class vessels and highly automated like the Alpha class. The further silencing by decoupling the inner and outer hull I think is impressive, considering Russians subs normally are double hulled design.

I think ur living in past. Militar-technical cooperation is not important part for Russian economy and certianly not on rock bottom prices. Those days are permanently over. It is permanent Capitalist state with very mercantilist interests
. Read the Medvedev Speach to Councile of Foreign Relations where he decalared China as the Strategic partner of Russia. It is the whole volume of trade and other policies that effects decision making.

A Conversation with Dmitry Medvedev
MEDVEDEV: I do not have any concerns about China. Right after this wonderful meeting with you, I'll have a meeting with president Hu Jintao. We have an excellent relationship which is referred to normally as a strategic partnership. We have common ground on a whole number of issues: economic development, political issues. This does not imply that we have the same political systems or we share the same views in everything; but, nevertheless, this is a very good, full-fledged, friendly exchange. This is broad-scale cooperation on all fronts. This year we will have the volume of bilateral trade of 50 billion US dollars. And of course I want to have the same kind of relationship with the United States.

You're making very little sense right now. So because Russia has a large amount of trade with China, Russia doesn't need military cooperation with India? When did I say anything about the Russian economy?
