Rafale loses out again?

If memory serves. Isn't Morocco one of the leading contenders to host the headquarters of the forthcoming US Africa Command?

If so, perhaps the F-16 offer takes on a very diplomatic and political significance...
I wouldn't rule out Morocco hosting AFRICOM but they weren't very receptive to idea when a U.S. delegation visited Morocco in June seeking a host for the new African military command. There have been talk of networking the command from several sites in Africa, rather than have a single headquarters.

defnition major non ally morocco

Benefits as a major non nato ally morocco since 2004

Nations named as major non-NATO allies are eligible for the following benefits:

* entry into cooperative research and development projects with the Department of Defense (DoD) on a shared-cost basis
* participation in certain counter-terrorism initiatives
* purchase of depleted uranium anti-tank rounds
* priority delivery of military surplus (ranging from rations to ships)
* possession of War Reserve Stocks of DoD-owned equipment that are kept outside of American military bases
* loans of equipment and materials for cooperative research and development projects and evaluations
* permission to use American financing for the purchase or lease of certain defense equipment
* reciprocal training
* expedited export processing of space technology
* permission for the country's corporations to bid on certain DoD contracts for the repair and maintenance of military equipment outside the United States

I think armament for f16 covers this also<?

The USAF could provide used F-16s for free to Morocco but Morocco would have to pay for them to be MLU.

I suspect it'll go the same way as the UAE deal for 400 Leclerc MBTs.
They were sold at a loss just to keep the predecessor of Nexter afloat.

While I'd bet on Morocco eventually buying the Rafale, this whole story doesn't bode well for further export orders under acceptable profitability criteria...

cheers

19% discount for a new Rafale... better than for a new car :D

Jokes apart, why not hand over the first Rafales of series production to Morocco and hand over to France more new production ones ?

cheers

Guess why Indians is putting French Avionics on their SU-30's, countries interrested in upgrades with Thales Avionics in their Mig-29's, hehehe, there is a reason for that.:p:
Yeah, there sure is, just not the one you think it is. It's not because russian technology is inferior to US, french or whatever you call in. Reason is that the russian high-tech is banned from export. If you take a closer look you would notice that the indian MiG-29s for example are izdelie 9-12B, not 9-12A (it means mod.B) with avionics capabilities hindered on purpouse. And putting french avionics on the Su-30MKI doesn't make them better. It makes them twice more dependant: on Russia for airframe and engine spareparts and to France for electronic cpmponents.

The MiG-29B is a bad example as it is an cold war export article. The soviets were more careful at that time, as the americans were. Today they mostly offer their best technology just to get the contract.

End of the line for the Rafale sale?

France silent on report Morocco may buy train

The spokesman for French president Nicolas Sarkozy on Friday would not confirm a newspaper report that Morocco may not buy Rafale fighter planes from Dassault Aviation (AVMD.PA: Quote, Profile, Research) but could instead buy the French TGV high-speed train.

"I do not confirm anything," David Martinon told a weekly news conference.

French daily La Tribune on Wednesday reported that the Moroccan government was set to accept a rival offer to buy F-16 fighter planes made by U.S. company Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N: Quote, Profile, Research).

Citing industrial sources, it said that France and Morocco were negotiating commercial compensation, notably the purchase of the high-speed train, which is being manufactured by Alstom.
