Interesting, now that I can really look at the report, the ATC comms section is interesting. The Russian ATC in Rostov was the first to note "that its target started falling apart" (the "its" in this case is the automated transponder system interrogations).

Just a little observation from a French General; I translated his credentials, he seems to have a legitimate resume. Though, we are still in the speculation stage on MH17 in general. The only conclusive thing was a mid air, sudden break up.

Feanor, regarding Poroshenko , how much control over ukraine's goverment do you think he got ? or did he have to 'fight' other people in his own goverment ?

Your French General is also a member of "French Permanent Aviation Safety Council" which I can't seem to find online.

Also, just because we don't know what exactly happened, we can pin down a few facts, including "MH17 being downed by numerous high-speed objects" and "no evidence of human or technical error" and a "mid-air break-up" to prune our investigation leads. At this stage, this is no longer speculation - we finally have facts to work with.

I can't find that specific organization either, not sure if it's because of translation or what. Though I read a little more on him and found his linkedin. He is apart of many organizations though. Jean du Verdier - France | LinkedIn

Does any French military website refer to him as being a General? Otherwise he could be a fantasist. The only General Jean Verdier I could find (that wasn't referred to on Russian websites) was someone from the 17th century.

There's a video online apparently showing him being interviewed by Voice of Russia, & claiming that NATO was guilty of aggression against Russia. It seems to date from last year.

He's written books. One is about "the demographic war being waged against the white world, the West and France".He thinks the army is the last bastion of French civilisation; he wants France & Europe to be more Christian, & emulate Putin in building churches on military bases.He's an enthusiast for the old French nobility, & has written books about the nobility of Limousin - to which, it seems, his ancestors belonged.

I've not found anything to contradict his claims of military rank. He must be pretty old if his claim of serving in Algeria for three years before its independence is true, but he looks old enough in the video.

Very old-fashioned right-wing nutter.

But - this is weird. How many General Jean du Verdiers are or were there? There's a death notice for one, aged 81, dated 30 Dec 2013 - Avis de décès - Jean DU VERDIER - Avis obsèques - Versailles (78) - Dans nos coeurs - which matches perfectly the LinkedIn profile. Right age, right background - the lot.

I think someone in Russia has been telling porkies. I suspect they don't realise that he's dead & buried, or maybe they do & don't expect anyone to notice. That interview has been recycled on Russian sites as if it was this year, after his death. Now we have this claim that an apparently dead man has spoken out about the downing of MH17.

Can't find anything else on him, maybe someone who knows French can. It does seem kind of odd, that there is no other English sources on him.

the number of prisoners (thousands) released by the militia boggles the mind, i assume those are from the ukraine soldiers who took the surrender offer from the militia. Any of you know how many militia/rebel prisoners were exchanged for these ukie soldiers ?

ps : i would prefer to keep this thread focusing on the ukraine crisis updates instead of discussing MH17 details especially discussing talking heads on media. so please could we continue with ukraine crisis updates especially now with the shaky cease fire and the almost predictable new offensive by the ukraine military against the militia.

MH17 is still an important topic. Their is still posturing to be done and an ongoing investigation; not to mention the amount of lives lost. This still plays a role in the overall situation. Discussing this helps disseminate factual information over false information.

In regards to the situation on the front, Feanor's last update still covers the status quo. It will take Ukraine a while to re equip and re mobilize; the same thing for the Rebels, they and Moscow have some consulting to do. Any break in the current ceasefire wouldn't be wise for both sides. There has been some sporadic exchanges and artillery fire, but no major movements.

He absolutely has to fight people in his own government, as well as present an image of a strong leader, lets the nationalists kick him out of office legally or otherwise. None the less he has managed to replace the Svoboda MinDef with a new guy. So there's that. Honestly it's very messy and will heavily depend on whether he can sell his war in the east as a victory.

Just a heads up, despite the ceasefire, fighting is continuing with ambushes, raids, and even a night-time attack on the Ukrainian positions in the Donetsk airport. I'll post a long update on Monday.
