The Ka-52 may have just found itself a new niche, in the Marines. I presume they will be the prime candidates for deploying on these ships.

It would be a great adittion to the air wing capability of the Russian Navy, if the proposed Mistral class is equiped with also attack helicopters. It could provide and air support to any landing party from the ship. Plus I'd like to see the kamov's more in the military service.

Admiralty specializes in subs. I doubt they will get the order.
They also build tankers and have won the tender to build Project 22280 which is a large icebreaker supply vessel of 26,000 tons. They are probably the best of all the Russian yards and they have the facilities to launch a ship of this size.

The Russian Defense Ministry will visit Navantia interested in strategic projection ship

04/12/2009 (Infodefensa.com) Madrid - The Russian Defense Ministry is interested in developments Navantia amphibious ships and a representation of him is planning an official visit in December at Spanish shipyard facilities to gather more information , according to industry sources.

The official Russian representation has an interest, namely the Strategic Projection Ship (BPE) "Juan Carlos I", under construction in the Spanish company's facilities and could serve to meet the needs of the Russian Navy has such units, the sources said the newspaper business.

The newspaper said also that yesterday, Day 3, was canceled by surprise a first step in this direction, a visit by the Ambassador of the Russian Federation in Madrid, Alexander Kuznetsov, who was scheduled to travel to the shipyard in Ferrol to know the evolution of the "Juan Carlos I" to be delivered next year.

According to Russian news agency RIA Novosti, the Russian Navy in urgent need of amphibious landing ships because it now has in service, built in Polish shipyards in the 70s and 80s, are outdated and involve high maintenance costs to keep them functional.

Recognizing this need, the French Defense Ministry and the shipyard DCNS Moscow have already offered his ship and helicopter carrier Mistral, in this sense, the September 23 one of these units visited the port of St. Petersburg. During his stay, he conducted deck landing in Russian assault helicopters, including the first of a Ka-52A.

According to some sources, one advantage of the Spanish against the French project is the price. The cost of Mistral vessels reached 600 million while the "Juan Carlos I", is priced at about 360 million euros.

Last September, Navantia Infodefensa.com reported that he had been invited to participate in an international competition held by the Russian Defense Ministry to purchase one or more helicopter carrier with other shipbuilding countries, including France and Holland, which is known .

The Russian Navy commander Vladimir Visotski said then that the U.S. remained on the sidelines of the negotiations "for obvious reasons" and, in particular, stressed that Washington is "very sensitive" about the transfer know-how.

The construction of modern ships LHD (Landing Helicopter Dock) is a specialty of Navantia which currently has manufacturing designs for Spain and Australia. In the Spanish case, this is the vessel Juan Carlos I, with a displacement of 27,100 tons larger than the French Mistral (21,500).
The LHD Juan Carlos I, launched in March last year in Ferrol, has a large capacity tanks and cargo holds as well as a wide 202x32 flight deck of aircraft and helicopters.

At the same time, the company that now runs Aurelio Martinez also won the international competition held in Australia for the purchase of two vessels of this type, defined in Spain as a Strategic Projection Ship.

The Juan Carlos I has 230 meters, an allocation of 243 staff and has a capacity to transport 1200 for amphibious operations or military of any kind.

Arms-tass said it will be decided by the end of the year whether Russia will purchase the
Mistral. However I'm not sure if this is an actual tender....

I believe that Russia must first reshuffle all its possibilities.
I think the Spanish offer is good, the ship is bigger, cheaper and with greater capabilities.
The trouble is that Spain still being built has yet JCI and the 2 Australian ...
not how they might do to meet deadlines Navantia with russia.

negotiate unless all manufactured in Russia and only the engineers have to move.

however, the mistral I have nothing pending delivery ...

Im not sure if I believe those figures. The 360 million euros is for a base build hull AFAIK, the 600 million was for a completed ship and the rights. I believe JC1 is more expensive than mistral in a true cost comparison.

If Mistral would be bought then it would be bought mostly naked - weapons and many other systems except i think medical and some other equipment would be Russian made (weapons, communication of course airwing)
During last visit of mistral to Saint-Peterburg Ka-52 and Ka-29 were landed on the deck.

Hasn't JC1 been launched? The two Canberra class ships are being built in Australia so Navantia probably has the capacity to launch an additional hull fairly quickly.

Juan Carlos 1 is in the water, yes, but the Canberra class hulls will be built by Navantia, then transported to Australia for finishing.

capabilities if it has, but now I know I have many projects in construction:

-1 LHD (JCI)
-2 LHD (with Australia)
-4 Submarine S-80
-1 Ship aprobisionamiento
-4 Action Ships maritima (BAM), possible 4 +
-4 Patrols Venezuela height (80m)
-1 Frigate (F-105)
-3 Horbart class frigate (with Australia)
-3 Frigates for Norway's F-300 (delivered)
-2 Scorpene submarines for Malaysia (completed)

so I do not know whether he could now attend to immediate mind Russia, I suppose so, but I think that maybe France is better off to meet deadlines ...

Will they transit to Australia under their own power or will they be towed, I don't know if there are any dockships capable of handling a ship of that length, the weight would be a problem.

I think they will be towed. AFAIK the superstructure was going to be build here. But Im not sure on this, it was a bit vauge at the time.

If cruise ships as large as the Norway/France can be towed, I am sure a LHD can be towed as well. Without a bridge, I don't see these ships sailing to Australia without towing...

The Australian LHDs will have their hull and powerplant built in Spain, but the superstructure and fitting out of the ships will be done in Australia...
