For WWII buffs, infantry, one very good and somewhat popular mod of Counterstrike, is day of defeat, good player comunity, very good online speed and stability, and realistic weapons and maps, needs teamplay to achieve aims, particularly in some maps. Love to use that stg44 or the mg42, devastating firepower! In my opinion better than Call of duty and MOHAA, in their online versions, but a bit pushy on the graphics side.
Or Command & Conquer, all time winner for me.

hmm... According to player's communities, Red Orchestra is far more accurate and realistic than Day of Defeat.
For WWII you have also a persistant universe, WWII online, which is a game featuring maps of thousands km square...

Anybody tried Black Hawk Down and its sequels (Team Sabre) ? Scenarios are extremely realistic and very plausible for any peace mission !

Both good titles, quite scary the whole Mogadishu theme, the follow-on Joint-ops titles also good, lots of community map mods which is great, really show out the seperiority of the AK47 in close in combat, great sound effects also, only thing is the graphics engine could do with an upgrade.

WWII online is the only game i play! You can be either allied(brits/french) or axis(only jerries ATM),but the game play 'area' covers belgium, northern france, western germany and abit of holland.ITS HUGE! to walk from 1 town to the next would take you half an hour, and there are more than 400 towns.lucky you can ride tanks then...or be a para and jump!or multicrew a panzer, destroyer, or even a blenheim(sic) bomber.
this 'game' is IT!

c u online 'chargert'

Overall I think all PC games with military themes are unrealistic in some way and that is why I don't find playing them that fun anymore...

Lack of AI, unrealistic graphics, and arcade-ish feel to all military games take away from the fun adn realism.

Has any members in Europe tried the Armed Assault? It is a development based on the highly realistic Operation Flashpoint. I've been looking to get my hands on this game for a while but unfortunately it hasn't been released in North American market. It's the closest thing to real combat for most.

"Sudden Strike 1 ,2" ," Blizzard(blitzkrieg)" are dedicated WW2 real time strategic game which are accord to history both on weapon type and on military data. But you can t or don t have to build anything, considered using dozens types of tanks and scores of tactic mode would have your hands overrun .

"Platoon" is an good tactics game for Vietnam War which is adopt from movie. You ll lead the small band into the depth of Vietnam jungle and city try to keep your men alive and your mission completed.

"Castle" ("Crusade" as an expansion) is an excellent game for those want to experience the life of a Lord. both management and tactics. All kind of siege weapon and defence weapon. However the most exciting part is to see to your grand castle built to be a both elegant and formidable one and give your people are greatest feast to win their heart.

Well, dont try "red alert 3" it s an disaster.

Red Orchestra is a great game dealing with mostly online play. It has numerous original game play boards, plus additional boards designed by players themselves. Levels allows up to 32 players at one time. The game deals with the Eastern Front during World War 2. The players normaly play as differnt infranty units including snipers, engineers, and machine gunners.

The best part of the game is the massive tank battle boards. Playing an online tank battle with 30 people is awesome. All the tanks are very accurate in look and operation for a computer game.

I highly recommend it.

well, i got armed assault,it´s been released in germany last week,i really couldn´t wait to get my fingers on that game.....who has played OFP will have no problem with that game, but that´s although the problem, the game itself is upto date with the graphics, but then again it has many bugs, and sometimes it really sucks!i.e. the a.i. of enemy is sometimes genuis, but then the a.i. of your comrades are dumb as bread!I just hope there will be some patches released in near future!
Who liked OFP will love Armed Assault! As said before, this game is one of the most realistic games released since a long time!
Just a question,I read somewhere that this game or OFP is used to train cadetts, I believe Marines,to simulate different tactis and situation!aanyone else heard of this?

OFP was based on VBS1, a training software developed by Bohemia Interactive for training of military personal in small unit tactics.

Since Codemaster and BIS went their different ways, BIS cannot develop a new game with the name "Operation Flashpoint" since they are not the publisher therefore they do not own the series. In response, they made Armed Assault which is quite similar to the original OFP. Codemaster on the other hand, has started the design of OFP2 on their own and will probably release it in 2008.

I recommend Harpoon 3 ANW for those who want realistic Naval simulation.

It is the best game for wargaming available to those who don't have access to military level sims.

I'm not sure if I missed it but I'm quite surprised that after 177 posts in this thread, no one's mentioned Combat Missions by BattleFront.Com

This game is, to me, the best thing since sliced bread for tactical level wargames.

It combines the best of both turn-based and real-time games in a quite seamless way. Orders are given to units on a turn based system but executed by both sides simultaneously in 1 minute real time chunks. If a unit, in executing an order, comes across variables such as contact with an enemy or incoming fire, it will react according to it's own individual AI and either modify it's orders or abandon them totally.

This system avoids the problems of exploiting an opponents relative immobility in a turn based system and the fastest-fingers-first-clickfest of a RTS.

So far 3 games have been released ...
i) Combat Missions - Beyond Overlord (European Theater 1944 - 1945)
ii) Combat Missions - Barbarossa to Berlin (Eastern Front 1941 - 1945)
iii) Combat Missions - Afrika Korp (Mediterranean 1940 - 1945)

Check it out and try the fully featured demos.

What I'm really looking forward to is the engine re-write that they are now doing which will include a hypothetical modern US/Coalition vs Syria module.

Combat Mission

I must admit, that Combat Mission (CM) series is the best tactical level game in realities of WW II. I have spend 3 years playing it with human opponents (PBeM or TCP/IP). Very simple interface (similar to this from Close Combat), max reality on battlefield and lots of funs (community is similar to Operation Flashpoint community => lots of mods, maps, scenarios and campaigns) makes this game something "you must have it". I have bought my copy of all 3 games for only 5 pounds in London (not much as for 3 years of great fun).

BTW Combat Mission: Africa Korps (CMAK) is being used by Australian Army :)

Do you have a favorite computer war game?

I was wondering if people have favorite war games because of the military interest. These are some of my favorites.

- Uncommon Valor by Gary Grigsby. Turn based naval game set in WWII south pacific. Very detailed simulation of carrier and naval battles. Extremely addictive PBEM play. It's necessary to think against your opponent.

- War in Russia by Gary Grigsby. Very old DOS game set in the eastern front. Tanks, planes and infantry squads are individually represented in Grigsby style.

- Falcon 4.0 by Microprose. One of the last great flight simulations made. Set in hypothetical second Korean war. Fly F16 in A2A and A2G missions. The battlefield is dynamicly simulated based on the achievements of your squadron. Many times you can catch the enemy in ground battle and destroy them to save your troops!

What are people's favorites? I am actually a game developer by profession and this is my interest.

edit: sorry did not see the PC Games thread. Please move this if that would be appropriate.
