It has been quite a while since the last credible combat flight simulation came out, wasn't it?
Same can be said about submarine- and tank-simulations.

It must have been 10 years ago that a major game developing company produced one of those.

Really strange, now that i think about it.

Go for the Steel Beasts series if you are looking for a good tank simulation.

With Steel Beasts Pro PE and Steel Beasts 2 you have two very capable simulations which are used by various nations for training and are not that old (Indeed Steel Beasts 2 is pretty new). :)

Theres a pretty good naval sim called dangerous waters. Good range of platforms, Seahawks, P3C's OHP's LA class SSN's, kilo class SSk's. Lots of stuff. realistic sonar and radar conditions ( i think i mean how would i know, its hard tracking a submarine thats for sure). You can manually use the sonar or gey a crewman to do it. Air threats. Its a fun game.

I didn't find much informations about Steel Beasts 2 via Google. When was it released?

And the few pictures i saw didn't look that good, i must say. The graphic seems to be much worse than in Operation Flashpoint which is from 2001.
It's a infantry simulation, but you can drive tanks and fly helicopters in a very well simulated way too.

Hey,

Medieval II Total War, fantastic historical age represented there, accompanied by intense tactical battles and a supreme turn based strategy empire building.

also oleg maddox's, Pacific Fighters, prefer it to the Il2 series as it has way more allied aircraft, cant wait for storm of war; battle of britain to be released.

and Company of Heroes, similar to the warhammer series, except ww2 normandy centred. possibly the game with the most micro managemnet potential, great fun against cleverish ai, & awesome against ur buddies. only bummer is the lack of inclusion of the british forces...

well thats my top 3 strategy games

Ah, shit I thought SB 2 is already sold...

You are right graphic of SB Pro isn't state of the art but it is ok and you cannot compare it to OFP when it comes to realism.

As said before the SB series is also used by various nation's armies for training and is much more real than OFP.

I don't know were to start when I should begin with saying what is not accurate in terms of tanks in OFP.

I agree that OFP is a great game with a really good mix of realism and fun and you have some nice tank missions in there but they do not come close to SB in terms of reality.

Here here, i'm a total war freak. Med 2 is awesome and allmost as good as rome was when it came out. Love the way the battlefield mechanics work, found rome a bit more fun though.

when it comes to modern combat flight simulation, the focus of the best graphic power have changed to other game types, you are right,falcon4.0 was the last modern good combat flight simulation:( ,i really loved the jane´s flight simulations!,but if you like WW2 flight simulation, then you should try the IL2-series(forgotten battles ,pacific fighters..),that is really realistic, and all the addon you can get ,you will have really fun playing the campaigns and it´s lot of fun playing it online, just ordered il2-1946 and waiting for it to arrive so i can continue torturing my flightstick!!

I recently bought Battlestations: Midway for PC. The graphics on the ships are pretty good and the games play is not completely too difficult. It's probably the most realistic WW2 naval games I have played were you get to directly control ships and planes. Though the games is pretty short I have pretty much beaten the whole thing in just a few days. It has a US Navy campaign but no Japanese one. Over all its an okay game.

Does anyone know when Armed Assault will be release for North America?
no idea mate, but it was'nt really worth the wait IMO.

Way to tough, not that I mind tough games, but this one just sucks all the fun out of playing. Claims its realistic, but just pits you against impossible odds.

The command and control is too clunky when your in a fire fight, try getting your squad to board a Brady under fire! half your men will be down before you get to the second drop down menu...
The AI is pretty good, enemys react quite well, not to smart not to dumb, and get confused if they cant figure out where the fire is coming from, your own troops have a tendency to be insanely brave tho, rather than doing the intelligent thing and pulling back.
Has some nice features, like when you get shot in the legs you have to crawl, ballistics are realistic, you never hear the bullet that kills you, ect. Would have been nice to have some more infantry weapons in the game too, the M4 is nice and easy to handle (to easy I think) and the AK74 kicks like a mule, there's no middle ground there.
Some more modern Russian weapons would have been nice too, it would bring the game into the 2000's, as it is its 1970's tech vs 2010 tech, and the kill ratios can be a little lobsided as a result.
Using the save button it is playable, but you need to use it a lot!

All in all 6 out of 10

merocaine, when the game was first released, you are right, imo it was not finished,i have completed the single player campaign, some missions really bad-ass/bucked/AI dumb as a banana and some just really easy/foolish,but i don´t think that anyone of them are not achievable(like the one where you have to destroy the shilkas,BMP-2 and steal a map and fly away with the MI-17,that was really tough:shudder !,but achievable!)the multiplayer:eek:hwell ,but now with patch 1.05,it´s really fun, esspecailly the HOLD missions, just remembers me of good old OFP times:D
can´t wait for the mod tools to be released and the OFP modder to get their hands on it!

I guess i'm a noob, but i already considered OFP pretty hard - at least some of the missions.
When playing it i often had the feeling the russian game designers (they are russian, right?) programmed the game to be played from the american point of view because they knew it wouldn't sell very well in the USA if otherwise, but they used every chance to create situations in the game in which the americans get their asses kicked at least 9 times out of 10, hehehe. Passive agression, in a way.

waylander is right, i mean sometimes hard but not unfair:D
it has been developed by a czech team, you just have to play it very cautious (OFP and ARMED ASSAULT:some mission last for an hour in order to achieve!),don´t play it like the "normal" ego shooter:)and run around, you wouldn´t do that in real life also?

ok, ok, I was maybe a little harsh, kind of gave up on mission 5, mission 3, the
one where you have to blow up the tanks, steal the map and escape was emotional draining! i literally had to crawl out, took feckin ages!
