The Russian-Ukrainian War Thread

I have no hate man. I just see strategy and defense interests. And of course its bad for Ukraine. I even said myself, that its the dirty work. I feel very sorry for that and wish it would be different. War and politics are dirty.
Good to hear man maby had the wrong impression just seemed like you cast all of Russia as the 1950s stereotypical evil guy. Russia has its probloms and it's areas of concern In how it acts but it's by and large a responsible state actor.

Then why does it send all those unhinged death threats to us? Medvedev for example is absolute unhinged.

Medvedev is unhinged that's his job to be the guy who says crazy things sort of a if you push us far enough we could do this type threat. But you know not actually from the state as for all the right reasons what Medvedev says is not the position of the state of Russia.

Also worth noting Russia basically never does what Medvedev says. He's mostly there to convey just how serious Russia could be on said issue

Well that's just the news guys getting clicks. In government people know who Medvedev is and that's he's just there to voice Russia's dissatisfaction with whatever it is. Honestly your newspapers should know that. Now if larinov said something like that it would be a big deal or of course Putin.

Medevedev also is forces kestic stuff in Russia when he wants a statement looking stronger but to also not have that statement be regarded as tru by other world leaders. Every goverment has these people. I'm sure you got people saying the e.u should invaded Russia and there definitely not speaking for the government

Spain has seized multiple russian vessels.

  • Motor Yacht Tango — Owned/linked to Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg; seized in Palma de Mallorca under a Spanish court order at the request of U.S. authorities.
  • Superyacht Valerie — Linked to Sergei Chemezov (head of state conglomerate Rostec); provisionally immobilised in Barcelona by Spanish authorities.
  • Luxury yacht Lady Anastasia — Seized under EU sanctions in Spain; linked to Russian oligarch Aleksandr Mikheyev (head of Rosoboronexport).
  • Superyacht Crescent — Reportedly detained in Spain (e.g., Tarragona) as part of sanction enforcement against oligarch-linked assets.
The Crescent alone has a value of almost 800 million €.

Clearly, I was not talking about the seized vessels of Russian oligarchs.

You have not answered my other questions either.

But modern drone warfare accomplished massive damages to the russian strategic bomber fleet. I believe just few years ago nobody would have envisoned that cheap drones can be send via truck far into the russians land and then take out dozens of bombers, which cant be replaced. The war in Ukraine opened completly new tactics and strategies.
You would be wrong, because it has been done before with cheap mortars.
Yes, they can be replace. It's just a question of how much money, like how much money to repair an Ukrainian thermal power plant.
What Ukrainian drones?

Could you enumerate:
What new tactics?
What new strategy?

Sure, Russia has very little capacity to build aircrafts. The destroyed bombers are irreplaceable.

.

The drone attack via trucks that delivered the drones took out 20% of the bomber fleet.

Each destroyed bomber is good news for Europe.

I think its a pretty new tactic to hire private trucks to deliver woord and have the drones hidden under the canvas, let the trucks drive far into the enemy terretory and then strike. Was a master act

Russias priority has been less strategic bombers and more fighter bombers

It's not per day it's 4 per month average. I'm not sure the exact numbers of each aircraft tho I'm sure one could find out or how many were for domestic use vs sales. But the jist of it is products going up tho at the cost of the civilian production.

A side note the strategic bombers well still of value is not the critical delivery platform it once was in some cases it's a liability depending if course on who your fighting.

The use of long range glide bombs has also added to the value of the fighter bombers concept. I'm sure with the carrying capacity of a true bomber there is the option to have a more effective glide bomber. The higher altitudes and weight/space capacity no doubt could be utilized to make a better glide bomb with even longer range

I think this includes all production including helicopters. I do know the strike aircraft are published on delivery tho. Not the numbers usually just a pic of two planes
It's also unclear if they only publish deliveries for domestic use only or for international sales aswell.
I'm guessing fennor would know more about it then I do.

Yes. It appears Russia is again expanding their area of control inside Kupyansk, but slowly, and penetrations are occurring around the town.

By the Dnieper, Russia advanced north and then retreated. Then advanced NE... And now is back north to Primorske and a long way NE past the solar farm.
In this area Russia has picked apart Ukraine's defenses and is pushing towards the road Orekhov-Zaporozhye to compromise logistics.

Yes, they're making a play for Konstantinovka. I'm working on an update post, but the holidays put be behind, and it's taking a minute.

I think these articles are a tad misleading and questionable. For example one of them claims the Tu-95 is the "overwhelming majority of Russia's intercontinental nuclear strike capability". A statement so ridiculous it's hard to take the article seriously. Russia's intercontinental nuclear strike capability is primarily ICBM, secondarily SLBM, and only somewhat based on an aging fleet of Soviet bombers, being slowly augmented with new built Tu-160Ms. That having been said buckets of Tu-95 and Tu-142 airframes are in storage, and there is little reason to think Russia couldn't reactivate some quantity to replace these losses if they considered it a priority. As is, I think they will focus on Tu-160M production rather than the Tu-95 family.

I don´t believe that. The Russians are making press notices when they hand over a new batch of (f.e.) SU-34.
30 a year is the most optimistic number I had found.

It's a very believable figure. 4 per month is 48 planes per year. They're putting out ~12-18 Su-34s, ~12-18 Su-35S, some quantity of Su-30SM2, some quantity of Su-57, and some quantity of Yak-130. Pre-war Russia had years where they put out much more than that. And no, the 4 per month figure does not include helos. Russian helicopter production in some years was over 300 units, and is certainly much higher then 4 per month when combined with jets. Aircraft production is the one area where Russian output outpaces losses confidently.

Update.

Northern Sumy-Chernigov area.

This section will talk about anything happening well north of the Russian incursion near Sumy city. Border fighting there is heating up, and Russian forces have taken Komarovka village.

Russian strike on a Ukrainian MLRS, allegedly a HIMARS, 75km from the border, Chernigov region. The munition used may have been a Shahed, or possibly the new S-71 Monochrome.

Russian strikes on Shkirmanovka, northern Sumy region. Allegedly there was a UAV assembly facility there.

Ukraine has announced an evacuation of 14 villages along the Russian border in Chernigov region. There are reports that Russian shelling in the area has intensified. I wouldn't be surprised to se Russia enter some of the border areas here too.

Sumy area.

Russian forces have expanded their area of control around Grabovskoe, securing the length of rail line. East of Yunakovka Russian forces have begun pushing into the forest. South of Guevo Russian forces have inched forward and in the same area, they've crossed the border from the south-east into that pocket of Ukrainian territory. Note in this area there is a bulge in the border, and it appears Russian forces are trying to take it, shortening the front line. Russian forces have taken all of Andreevka, and pushed south from Alekseevka. They've also inched forward west and south of Yunakovka. North of Kondratovka Russian forces have taken more ground and are on the outskirts of the village.

A Ukrainian soldier shows off a video feed from a Russian UAV over Sumy city.

Russian battlegroup north Pantsyr operations. Note it's an export variant Pantsyr but on a domestic Kamaz chassis using a mix of export-designated and domestic missile variants.

Kharkov area.

Russian forces are continuing their push south of the river, taking ground in the forest towards Grafskoe reportedly entering Grafskoe itself, and pushing south of Liman towards Semyonovka. They're also continuing to gain ground in Volchanskie Hutora, and now hold most of that village. Russian forces have taken all of Prilipka, and pushed west of there towards Bugrovatka, connecting with Russian forces there. There are also unconfirmed reports of Russian movements out of Degtyarnoe towards Nesternoe.

Ukraine putting up new anti-drone corridor in Kharkov region. This is a major highway on the outskirts of the city.

Kupyansk area.

The situation in Kupyansk and it's immediate surroundings remains very confusing. There's Russian penetration around Moskovka, Kurilovka, Podoly, and Kucherovka. But there's also Ukrainian presence, sometimes in the same areas. In Kupyansk itself Russian forces are present east and west of the river, but mostly in the northern and central parts of town. It also appears Russia is now expanding their area of control in the industrial part of north-eastern Kupyansk. Ukrainian forces have meanwhile pushed eastward towards Stepovaya Novoselka, adding to the confusion. North of Kupyansk Russian forces have attacked and taken half of Kondrashocka, expanded their area of control near Radkovka, and have taken Tischenkovka. Near Dvurechenskoe Russian forces have taken another small piece of ground.

A bundle of Russian strikes on Ukrainian forces in the Kupyansk area. Targets include an M113, an armored car of some sort, and an MBT. Also many unarmored SUVs/pickups.

Oskol front.

Russian forces have gained ground near Novoegorovka, while Ukrainian forces have gained some towards Grekovka. Overall this middle section, where the front is only slightly past the Zherebets, remains mostly static. Back and forth fighting continues around Borovaya, with Russia forces gaining some ground in the eastern trenches and Ukraine pushing Russia back from Novoplatonovka, unblocking the road to Zagryzovo, where Ukraine has also gained some ground.

Krasniy Liman area.

East of Krasniy Liman Russian forces have taken more fields, and have advanced to the north-eastern outskirts of town in a salient. North-west of Krasniy Liman Russian forces have entered Svyatogorsk, and expanded their area of control inside Yarova. They also briefly took the Sosnovoye rail station but were repulsed and north of there Russian forces have pushed into Aleksandrovka and have begun enveloping Koroviy Yar from the east. South of Krasniy Liman a Ukrainian counter-attack retook Dibrova but they were ultimately pushed back out. And Russian forces are continuing to advance in the woods, starting to envelop Liman from the south.

Russian forces continue to gain ground west of Seversk. Some back and forth fighting is reported in Reznikovka. Zakotnoe is now in Russian hands. North of the river Russian forces are continuing to gain ground in Ozernoe, and along the north river shore.

Russian 2S7 operations, Seversk area, 2nd Arty Bde.

Russian BARS-16 in the Seversk area.

Druzhkovka area.

Russian forces have taken Min'kovka, Novomarkovo, and inched forward along the canal north of Novomarkovo and west of Novomarkovo in the fields. North of there Russian forces have taken all of Bondarnoe and Khromovka and entered Nikiforovka. They've also taken the Babachyi forest and chunks of countryside around the area.

A destroyed Ukrainian vehicle in Druzhkovka.

A small bucket of Russian strikes on various civilian vehicles in Druzhkovka. It's unclear in some cases how they identified them as being used by Ukrainian military.

Konstantinovka area.

Russian forces are making a big effort to take Konstantinovka. They've intensified operations south-west of town taking all the northern shore of the Kleban-Byk reservoire. They also took the large strong point at the crossroads, and have entered Il'yinka. Berestok is in Ukrainian hands but with Russian forces on both sides. It appears the plan is to take the southern part of town, rather than taking over the entire town in one large assault. Meanwhile Ukraine has counter-attacked towards Predtechnoe again, east of Konstantinovka. North-east of Konstantinovka Russian forces have entered Markovo, and taken more ground east of Verolyubovka. Ukrainian presence remains in the south-western outskirts of Chasov Yar, and Russia appears to be attempting to encircle them there.

Russian drone strikes around Konstantinovka. We have them hitting a UGV, a soldier riding an ATV, a pair of Ukrainian infantry (though the way the drone went down it may have been shot down), a Ukrainian armored vehicle and a couple of unarmored cars.

Pokrovsk area.

After several back and forth attacks and counter-attacks in western Rodinskoe and north of Pokrovsk, Russian forces have pushed up from the south, west of the town, likely aiming for the water treatment plant that Ukraine seems to be using as a staging area. If they can take it, it would secure the western approaches to Rodinskoe. Also a number of Russian elements have pushed forward, entering Biletskoe, and many other area west of Rodinskoe, but there's no confirmation of control. Ukraine meanwhile still holds it's foothold in Rodinskoe. East of Grishino Russian forces have taken another water treatment facility, approaching Grishino from the east. Inside Grishino Russian forces continue to inch forward. In the former salient area Russian forces are gaining ground north of Sofievka, have entered Toretskoe from the south, and are recapturing parts of the old quarries south of Kucherov Yar. They've also re-entered Novoe Shakhovo, and are advancing north of Rusin Yar. West of the old salient Russian forces have pushed outwards towards Noviy Donbas and are starting to flank Biletskoe from the north-east. West of Pokrovsk Ukrainian forces recaptured some ground around the mine complex near Kotlino.

Dnepropetrovsk front.

Russian forces have taken most of the country-side south of the Solenoe, north of the Volchya. Inside Novopavlovka Russian forces are making minor gains. Inside Ivanovka back and forth fighting continues.

Eastern Zaporozhye.

Ukraine launched 3 deep penetrating counter-attacks against Russian lines in this areaRussian forces have taken Priluki, Alenokonstantinovka, and Zelenoe north-west of Gulyaypole, across the Gaychur. They've also expanded their area of control west and south of Gulyaypole, pushing on Zaliznichnoe and contesting Svyatopetrovka and entering Staroukrainka (though without confirmed consolidation). They've also expanded their area of control north and north-west of Dorozhnyanka to the rail line, and fully taking the highway to Gulyaypole. On the northern side Russian forces have taken Andreevka, Zarechnoe, Bratskoe and entered Kosevtsevo, but couldn't hold it.

Zaporozhye front.

Russia has chewed through Ukrainian lines at Stepnogorsk taking it fully, and taken large swathes of countryside around it. Primor'skoye is also in Russian hands, and Lukyanovskoe and Pavlovka are contested. Russian forces are also pushing north-east, trying to get close to the highway from Orekhov to Zaporozhye. This is clearly meant to put that MSR in easy drone range. Russia has also restarted eastward pushes out of the Scherbaki area, and is attempting to fully secure the villages Stepovoe, Malye Scherbaki, and Scherbaki. In the Orekhov area Russian forces have taken Belogor'ye, and have started pushing forward in Malaya Tokmachka again. South-west of Orekhov Russian forces have secured all of Nesteryanka and have entered Novoandreevka.

Black Sea/Odessa.

We have another bundle of Ukrainian drone strikes on targets in Crimea. They hit what appears to be an S-300V decoy, an RSP-6M2 radar, a Buk-M3 command vehicle (possibly unsuccessfully), a 9S36M radar from a Buk-M3, a Nebo-SVU radar, and a BK-16 boat.

Strikes.

Russian strikes on Kiev. Links represent at least 4 waves of strikes. Targets include TEC-4, TEC-5 and TEC-6 powerlpants, a universirty dormitory, storage facilities, and a tram depot. Power outages are reported both in Kiev and across the region. Note no students were repoted hurt in the strike, and empty university dormitories are the kinds of facilities of often used to house troops.

Russia reportedly hit a car dealership and storage facility in Belaya Tserkov.

Russia hit the Kiev hydro-electric powerplant in Vyshgorod. Links represent at least two different waves of strikes.

Russia hit Chernigov. Targets reportedly include the powerplant and local energy infrastructure. Links represent at least 2 different waves of strikes.

Russian Shaheds targeting Ukrainian gas infrastructure in Chernigov region.

Russia hit the village of Semenovka, Chernigov region. Targets unclear.

Several Russian Iskanders hit Chernigov region, possibly the Desna training center.

Russia hit Kharkov, targets include the Novaya Pochya facility, the Kharkovskaya substation, and the TEC-3 and TEC-5 powerplants. At least one of the strikes used Tornado-S missiles. The links below represent at least 3 waves of strikes. There was also a strike on the road into Kharkov where a pickup truck was destroyed.

An explosion took place in Kharkov that appears unrelated to the recent missile strikes. It may have been a munition storage facility. Ukrainian sources initially claimed it was a Iskander strike while Russian sources denied it. Additionally initial photos of the aftermath showed Ukrainian service members apparently caught in the blast, but those photos were later removed.

It appears a Ukrainian Patriot unit has shown up in Kharkov. This might be a sign that the long-rumored deliveries of ex-Israeli Patriots have occurred, improving availability and making them more willing to risk systems this close to the border.

And Russia hit what appear to be elements of a Patriot battery near Kharkov, but the lack of secondary detonations as well as some details of the system points to this being a decoy. The drones used were the new BM-35s that are cropping up more and more.

Russian strikes on Panyutino, near Lozovaya. Allegedly targets include rail and energy infrastructure.

Russia hit Dnepropetrovsk, power outages are reported. Targets include a cooking oil processing facility. In a curious incident at least one Russian BM-35 drone went down after clipping some powerlines. Links represent at least 3 different waves of strikes.

Russia hit Krivoy Rog. Targest reportedly were focused on energy infrastructure. Links represent at least 3 waves of strikes. Blackouts are reported after the strikes.

Russia hit the Krivorozhskaya thermal powerplant, in the town of Zelenodol'sk. Links represent at least two separate waves of strikes.

Russia hit Kremenchug.

Russia hit a substation in Vol'nyansk, Zaporozhye region.

Russian strikes on two substations in Zaporozhye region.

Russia hit Nikolaev. Links represent at least two waves of strikes.

Russian strikes on Odessa. Damage from the strikes caused a large spill of some sort of cooking oil. Also several ships including a ship flying a Maltese flag were damaged. Links represent at least 4 waves of strikes. Interestingly enough Russia is hitting many (not all) ships with relatively small drones, BM-35s, and in some cases Shaheds. The damage is limited and it appears the intent is to emphasize the threat rather than destroy the ships. Targets also include a powerplant and storage facilities.

Russia hit the Il'chevsk fisheries port, Odessa region.

Russia hit the Mayak bridge again, Odessa region. Meanwhile an improvised crossing has been set up.

Russia hit Izmail. Allegedly the target was a facility that makes powergrid equipment.

Russia hit Lutsk. Targets unclear.

Russia hit a substation in Zhitomyr.

Russia hit a substation in Rovno.

Russia hit a rail depot in Kovel'.

Russia hit Volyn' region, allegedly targeting energy infrastructure. Details are absent.

Russian strikes on L'vov.

A Russian Oreshnik strike hit the L'vov aviation repair plant.

It appears Russia did hit gas works in L'vov region, causing substantial damage, but it's apparently unrelated to the Oreshnik strike. Interruptions of gas supplies to buildings have been reported.

Ukraine intercepting a Shahed with an AAM on it.

Shahed adaptations continue. We have variants carrying MANPADS to ambush Ukrainian aircraft hunting them, and IR strobes to presumably blind the optics of whatever it trying to bring it down. So far these don't appear to be one-size-fits-all but rather attempts to see what works.

Russian BM-35 drone with a Starlink terminal.

An interesting CAST article on the Geran'-4 and 5 munitions. The Geran'-4 is a flying wing with a jet engine, and an R-73 AAM, and the Geran'-5 is a new aerodynamic layout better suited to the jet engine. The latter is arguably not a drone anymore but a regular missile, though the line is increasingly blurry.
