It gets me wondering about the security clearance processes that even let him join. Don’t think you’d get into the Australian forces in the same situation.

Given that he has an entirely Chinese name & was in the USN for a relatively short time before starting his treason, I think Sandhi Yudha is right, & there was more to it than money. It's even possible that he was planted in the job.
If he was planted he would have mentioned his initial contact with his Chinese handler to his fellow sailors, and he wouldn't have been getting paid to provide relatively minor intel items
More likely the Chinese hoped to develop him for a long term asset

Not necessarily. Here in lies the problem with vetting people with dual nationalities, there is no test for loyalty that is 100% accurate. It comes down to doing a risk assessment and making a judgement call but at the end of the day noone can read people's minds and predict what someone will do tomorrow.

There is no 100% loyalty. Stop.
Anyone can decide, for billions of reasons (most of the time...money) to cooperate with an enemy or competitor.

This year in Italy a navy officer (a Captain) was sentenced to life in prison (30 years in Italy maximum for non violent crimes) for espionage in favour of the Russians, and he didn't even visited Russia in his life once.

There is no elimination of risk of someone being turned, but it also does not mean that screening isn't effective. There are always factors that make one more susceptible than the other, such as family history, economic situation, or a rarity these days, ideology

The article mentioned he was acquitted him of naturalization fraud. This meant he was not born or grew up in the US. This will certainly be one factor. Whether he was a plant or not, we will not know.

But it is also not uncommon for state intelligence to blackmail, and many of these migrants still have large, extended families back in their origin countries. Chinese MSS is well known to leverage on this within the overseas chinese community to apply pressure on migrants to perform illegal actions etc.

Xavier talk to Babcock Marine CEO on Type 31/Arrowhead 140 program at DSEI. Put it in this thread as Arrowhead 140 already become International program.

Another idea from the world's greatest CiC, aks IOTUS. Might happen faster than his twin engine F-35 Ferrari or was it F-55.

Is Trump’s Call For Putting Battleships Back In The Navy's Fleet Even Feasible?
|“It’s something we’re actually considering, the concept of battleship, nice, six-inch side, solid steel. Not aluminum, aluminum that melts. If it looks at a missile coming at it, [it] starts melting as the missile’s about two miles away,” he continued. “Now those ships, they don’t make them that way anymore, but you look at it, your Secretary [Phelan] likes it, and I’m sort of open to it. And bullets are a lot less expensive than missiles.” |

He is such an intelligent, smart, brilliant and genius man...this amazing person is not only the ambassador of peace, but he is also a metallurgy expert.

Still he forgot about the Advanced Gun System once planned for the Zumwald class of cruisers.

KJN visited their new Choe Hyon class destroyer. Plenty of updates and combat effectiveness aside, quite impressive for them to pull something like this off.

Edit: To be clear, while impressive (and they seem to make a deliberate attempt to make them impressive for KJN, with a me too hint), I do have questions and doubts about the effectiveness and reliability.

Just add India Media (The Hindu) that put video from North Korea KCNA on Kim's visit to this Destroyer. According to KCNA Kim's vow to have the third Destroyer soon.

Yes considering what DPRK can produce so far, it is an impressive achievement for them. However how effective those destroyers against destroyer down south bellow, now that's the big question.

As koxinga posted, Kim visited the Choe Hyon (lead ship in the class). It was Kang Kon, second ship in the class, that suffered the launch accident back in May.

Thanks for the correction, I have mess up the name, as I tought Choe Hyon is the second one. As previously Fat Kim already inspect the ship when launch. Anyway already retract that part on my previous post.

Following the Philipines interest on Abukuma Class as Koxinga Put the link few months ago, the Philipines MinDef saying that they only interested to get six after reviewing their budget.

Japan media also reported that Vietnam and Indonesia also shown interest with Abukuma class Destroyer Escort. There are speculations due to Japanese policies on what kind of condition that those Abukuma class will be transfer.

If Japan allowed in the end the transfer I suspect the missiles will be taken away, but sensors and guns will remain. If that happen it is still good deal as those ships can still be streach out to 15 or even 20 years as Patrol Corvettes.

Oh no, please not again weird plans of a new class of 30 years old warships with a propulsion system, combat management system and sensors from types and brands TNI-AL never used before.... as "interim solution".

as "interim solution".
Well they are still talk on Pohang and now seems interest with Abukuma. Depends on their assessment in the end. Afterall even Pinoy also can not be guarantee the number. This is not the first time they want to have interim solution. In the end money/budget talk, and that's especially for all ASEAN navies outside Singapore. They have to balance between getting new assets, and secondary assets to build up the force. All back in the end toward balance choices of budget and time line.

Well, what i mean is, if we have to take old second hand warships, it would be nice if they were from the navies of the Netherlands, Denmark, Italy or Turkey, because of our current fleet and existing acquisitions/orders.

Italy offer Maestralle for interim frigates, but seems MinDef decided not to choose. They are not allergic to second hand Frigates and Corvetes. They already talk to ROK on surplus Pohang, they also seems talking with Japan for surplus Abukuma.

Seem in the end budget and off course sales lobby matter more. Whether Meastralle, Pohang or Abukuma there are sales involve. Because there will be substantial contract to upgrade those second hand assets. In the end we don't know yet which interim corvettes or DE going to be taken. It still could be surplus PLAN corvette.
