Plenty of spare parts for what we have, I believe a good stock of retired Sikorsky Seahawk B models stored there and some preserved for possible foreign military sales.Let's see... Hmm...

This is actually more the type of could see NZ acquiring for any envisaged 3rd (or 4th) frigate if they were serious in this area vs a straight frigate. More options and easier sell and more of a hybrid compromise between any 3rd frigate and 2nd sealift type currently being suggested. So 2 Iver types and 1 absalon type is still a vast improvement on just the 2 frigates and no 2nd sealift ship regardless so bit of a win either way.New UK version of the Absalon class? A bit bigger though at 170m and 15,000t.New UK version of the Absalon class? Steller Systems unveil ‘Fearless’ Multi Role Support Ship concept | Navy Lookout
Just a tad bigger, I know.A bit bigger though at 170m and 15,000t.
Yes the well deck is a must have at this time but could change. and the system that is used is significantly better than that used on Canterbury. The extra combat capability and possibilities is attractive.Has no well dock and that is one thing we need and RNZN want... and was stated in the last DCP
Yes, but would look very impressive tying up in Australian portA bit bigger though at 170m and 15,000t.
We could still get a couple of LHDs with a well deck if required. This just adds on to the fire power and transport requirements, along with replenishment of supplies if needed. Add it as a Escort for the LHDs if required.Has no well dock and that is one thing we need and RNZN want... and was stated in the last DCP
The UK, both government and industry, have lots on their plates. Also, they likely feel Asian competitors, especially Japan, are favoured.Well you got to hand it to the Japanese for maximising opportunities that present themselves! They (presumably) arranged for the NZ PM to announce closer Japan-NZ defence arrangements on the JS Kumano, the Mogami class Frigate type which is of interest by the Australian Govt and potentially NZ.

I'm also slightly surprised the likes of the UK Govt hasn't already invited the NZ Govt/PM over for a visit and to also shore up possible defence co-operation and major acquisition opportunities. Not only do they have a couple of applicable Frigate options I would also suggest the likes of the proposed Multi-Role Support Ship (with a well-dock such as the BMT Ellida) could be a possible replacement option for sealift vessel HMNZS Canterbury?
Presumably such a visit will now have to wait until after the UK general election (if not much later on, to allow a new(?) UK Govt settle in? If so perhaps the likes of Japan and South Korea may ramp up efforts!
Particularly with the NZ Defence Capability Plan still being worked on (now with a Sept/Oct release date).
Nice product placement, well done Japan and good to see them pushing defence exports with purpose finally. Competition only breeds excellence, development and more importantly for us, cost benefits and I have no doubt a country like Japan doesn't skimp on quality.Well you got to hand it to the Japanese for maximising opportunities that present themselves! If they can create the Toyota Corolla of frigates, then NZ and Australia would no doubt be buying from Japan. Or even at a Lexus level.Nice product placement, well done Japan and good to see them pushing defence exports with purpose finally.
