As a Norwegian taxpayer (non citizen) I'm in complete agreement with you. I think Norway should cancel them, they don't need them IMO, Gripen was more than enough aircraft.

A little off-topic, wasn't sure where to post this. Regarding the S-400/Pantsir coupling: is the SHORAD defending very long range SAM systems a recent idea?
i.e. Is it because their strategic SAMs have become so long range they need a close in defense or was this around from the early S-300 days?

Well the Soviets developed the Tor for that exact purpose, which implies that the concept existed prior to the beginning of the Tor development. It's development began in 1975. So...

From what I read, it was always intended, at least partially, to serve as SHORAD for theater SAMs. Remember it was also a VMF system (the Ezh/Kinzhal) which is naturally working together with the naval Buk (Shtil) and S-300F.
Interesting, the Russians plan to re-open the production lines of the TU-160 Blackjack missile carrier.
I would be interested to learn more about the capabilities of this one, being the heaviest combat aircraft on Earth, plus a variable geometry platform, the maintenance demands must be incredible.

It's a vague statement of desire rather then a specific goal. Given current budget restrictions, I doubt they will pull it off. Though it's possible that the PAK-DA gets pushed back by a couple decades, for an upgraded Tu-160 in the meantime.

Rumour has it three squadrons (36) Flankers are to be upgraded.

Seems like predictions from prior years that the RuAF would upgrade older AC to maintain numbers are panning out.
IIRC 72 or so upgraded Flankers (SM model) are currently in service.
Can someone elaborate on the nature of the upgrade?

Well, there was originaly 56 Su-27SM being upgraded.
But there has been some losses & smaller mishap, so we are probobly down to around 50 Su-27SM.
Then you have the 12 Su-27SM3(new airframes) which was delivered 2011 from KnAAZ. Along with 4 + a later deal on 8 Su-30M2's.
This new Su-27 upgrade are build upon the SM3 variant. Instrumentation, communication, Navigation, radar, self-defens suit etc.
Only thing i'm not sure of is what kind on engine it will get.

I've been waiting for this.. like 10 years now.
Its nice to see the old dedicated Su-24MR off now.
I mean that thing is a dinosaur by now.
Now this Recon pod:
"The company has received substantial order from JSC "Sukhoi" for the manufacture of containers of universal Intelligence (RBM) "Owl" for the Sukhoi Su-34. According to the agreement, the first phase of cooperation involves the production of 8 containers in three versions: two - radiotechnical (PT) [ECM?], three - Radar (RL), three - optoelectronic (OE)."
Do we dare hope this RL version is an AESA radar?

RTR probably. In other words an ELINT variant. They have one that's a dedicated side-looking radar, one that's an ELINT pod to replace the old Il-18 variants, and one that's a fancier OLS system.
Meanwhile plans for Il-112V purchases through 2020 have been cut. Which makes sense given that the plane has yet to take off, never mind pass state trials or have the rather dilapidated factory prepared for producing it. It helps reduce the budget hole, and is only realistic.

Also there's talk about resuming Mi-14 production. How realistic this is remains unclear. Given that the Ka-27M is close to being ready, and apparently carries a new AESA radar, I don't know how necessary the Mi-14 would be.

General question: how does a military with outdated equipment go about adjusting tactics, training etc to prepare against more modern systems?
i.e. how and what, if possible, would Russia change in its usage of older Flankers barring any upgrades?
