Really... they just now are noticing the green glow?

Odds are that since most of the big issues are being addressed that they are now nitpicking the minor stuff.

The delay is in green lighting the operational testing program. Which are the combat simulations and the like. Apparently because the VSI HMD is not up to a standard for operational testing and the alternate BAE HMD won’t be ready until 2014. All of this is fair enough as the HMD is a crucial part of the F-35’s combat capability and operational testing without it won’t be indicative of anything like the in service capability. Would be like starting operational testing of an F-15 or any other fourth generation fighter without a working HUD.

The "more problems" line is just an invention of the media outlet's sub-editor. Someone too ignorant and undisciplined to realise just what a misleading statement it is.

HMD not ready until 2014? Do they have to wait until then to implement the operational test program?
The panoramic display can sub for the HMD for this purpose, right?

The Australian National Audit Office (ANAO) has just released a thorough report into the F-35 project and Australia’s planned acquisition. In short the audit is supportive of the project and defence’s management of this acquisition. Of note the audit includes the answer to the “$6 million dollar question”. Just how much does the F-35 cost…

The total cost to Australia for 100 F-35s in then-year US dollars (inflation adjusted to the year in which each dollar is spent) is … drum roll…

US$ 13,210,620,000 ! Or just over $13 billion. Of which $12.362 billion is the unit production costs. The other billion being Australia’s project development costs and contributions to the shared cost of establishing the production line, upgrade capability, etc.

So that’s a unit production cost of $123.62 million.

There is also linked second audit on maintenance of the Hornet and Super Hornet fleets in service until replaced by the F-35. Several hundred pages of value added reading…

Todays Air Force Magazine Daily Report, 10/05/12, shows two production F-35Bs being refueled by a KC-130j, flying out of the school house at Eglin on 10/02/12, notable because they are the first F35bs and they are also "production" coded or operational aircraft, the Lightening ll is moving right along in meeting many of its current objectives, and reports are that USAF testing is coming along quite nicely. Cheers Brat

Congratualations to Austrian Felix Baumgartener on the world record parachute jump from 128,000 feet, airspeed over 700 mph, good job Felix and congratualations. Aerospace history made today, highest manned balloon flight, highest airspeed in freefall and highest altitude of 128,000 ft. whew, I have been sweating this one, it is a biggie, Felix is one brave character, no word on whether or not he broke the sound barrier? 1:30 pm CST

Not sure how this is related to the F-35, but the video was just uploaded to youtube; for those who are interested you can see it here: youtube.com/watch?v=FHtvDA0W34I

The description claims Felix reached a maximum speed of 1,342.8 km/h (833mph), which is faster than the speed of sound at sea level (~1225 km/h or 761 mph).. Whether or not the point at which he reached this speed broke the speed of sound it doesn't say

Indeed. Why it's being posted here is beyond me. Take it to another thread (one that isn't totally unrelated to the subject).

I still don't understand why countries aren't actually coming together to buy the jsf's as a whole batch surely there must be some money to save with this ,couldn't Australia and Singapore buy it together or the UK and Canada the possiblites should be explored,Even create one main European training hub like the ttte and one main maintance hub.

That is the way that the F-35 is built. Every year that the Partners want F-35s, they place orders with the JPO based on estimated cost. The orders are then grouped together and a single order is placed with LM and P&W.

Gun gas and a bit of cooling, I expect...
Flight Global is reporting that AF-1 performed its first JDAM-2000 pounder release 10/16/12 at Edwards AFB, with Maj Mat Phillips at the helm. Things continue to role along in the F-35 program now that its under new managment. I believe this is the first weapons release for the A-model?
