Well they were RAN ships on which Austrlaians served and in some cases died. My dad served on Queenborough, his dad on Stuart (pre-war) and his uncle on Napier. These names have history and it could be argued are more deserving of use than some others doing the rounds. At least we don't partake in the political games that are behind the naming of many USN ships, imagine having the LHDs named after former PMs?The RAN never had a policy of alphabetic numbering the RN did for most of its destroyer and submarine flotillas. They passed on some of these ships to the RAN and they came with said names (V/W, S/T, O, Q and Ns). The V boats are special because of the Scrap Iron Flotilla of WWII and the Cold War Daring class.
Other than that it would look pretty stupid if we named our ships “Quiberon” or “Nizam” rather than “Anzac” or “Ballarat”… This is the Australian navy afterall. The V boats will come around soon but the rest of the Alphabets are best for things like crew names for patrol boats.
