Guys I'm going to be gone until the 20th. I won't be able to make long update posts, though I might come by and write a reply or two if I have internet access. If you speak Russian you can use the following sources as relatively reliable ones. If anything big happens it will get coverage there.

bmpd.livejournal.com - the blog of CAST, a Moscow-based think tank
twower.livejournal.com - a Russian professional military observer, with good factual accuracy.
newsru.com - a Russian online newspaper, generally fairly accurate
Военный информатор - военные новоÑти и аналитика - a military and defense newspaper

There's also a decent amount of materials on militaryphotos.

Situation in the Ukraine/Crimea *Photos - Videos* ONLY - Page 181

I come back on the 20th, you can expect a long update post then.

Neither enjoyable nor time off, but I'm glad it's been useful. Hopefully someone who speaks Russian will take over providing info for a little bit.

Stay safe wherever it is you are off to, and thanks for the updates, I check all the time.

Does anyone have any information on the Azov battalion? They seem like they are pretty far right, judging by the look of them and their wolfsangel emblem etc. They also look pretty well equipped for a militia style unit, along with seeming to have a fair degree of uniformity. This is based on the pictures I have seen of them, I should add. Hence the info request. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

here is a sky news story snippet on them i found, from 20th or so may:

If it is found to be true that Chechen fighters are joining pro-Russian fighters in Ukraine. Would that justify Russia from carrying out airstrikes in Ukraine just the same way that Israel carried out airstrikes against Syria with the aim of preventing the rebels from obtaining game changing weaponry.

Opinion:

The civil war-proper is in full swing albeit not completely indiscriminate yet. As at the start of the Syrian conflict, good peacetime commanders will be rapidly replaced by good battlefield commanders. Civilian groups halting Government armoured columns are becoming far too dangerous, avoiding "collateral damage" is a lower priority.

A bit old, but that Ukrainian MI-24 with UN markings is claimed to have been left on from a Congo mission 2 years ago. Given how inept the military is I can believe that.

Lemme see - in Syria, anti-Israeli Hezbollah fighters from Lebanon are helping the anti-Israeli Syrian government against assorted rebels.

In Ukraine, there are reports that pro-Russian (or plain mercenary) Chechen fighters from Russia are helping pro-Russian Ukrainian rebels against the anti-Russian government of Ukraine.

Can you see the difference? And why the logic of your post is faulty?

Sorry what I mean is I know that at the moment the Chechen rebels are on the side of the pro Russians but if and when this finishes the chechens would still have access to the weaponry which surely would be a problem for Russia.

@Concerned -These particular Chechens would be part of militias loyal to Ramzan Kaydrov so have access to weapons in Russia so in theory they could turn against Russia at anytime.Look at it this way- if the Chechen fighters get killed in Ukraina the FSB will not shed any tears but if they come back home it`s back to the status quo.

Meanwhile in Ukraina an alleged execution of hostages/prisoners by rebels. Can someone summarize what he is saying

i missed feanor's update..

based on the info i scoured on the net, i found some interesting bits :

A letter from Ukraine' Security Service to Derek Chollet (US Assitant Secretary of Defense) regarding the death of US Agents that was onboard the same helicopter that was shot down with the National Guard general.

This info was supposedly hacked from the goverment's PC.

So far no denial at all from the US regarding this, im 50-50 on this but im have a feeling US certainly lost some people in the ukrainian debacle (covertly)..

here's the letter in question

https://niqnaq.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/2.png

------------------------------------------------------

there's also a list (by Andrei Illarionov ) of what US goverment been doing to Russia summarized in this blog (russian) , in as much i think the action of US goverment can already be considered as an aggressive moves to isolate russia (blockade?) that itself is about the same as war declaration (nasser's blockade of israeli ships in strait of tiran was one of the reason that israel used as their justification of first strike).

http://echo.msk.ru/blog/aillar/1336800-echo/
Fifteen aspects of Obama’s anti-Russia offensive:

1. For the first time over the last two decades, a US president has publicly declared that an attack on Poland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Romania, all NATO member countries, will prompt a NATO response under Article Five and that the West is prepared to defend them against a Russian attack.

2. The US president has publicly called Putin’s actions “Russia’s aggression against Ukraine” and a violation of the basis for cooperation between NATO and Moscow.

3. Obama has confirmed that NATO will go ahead with the installation of ABM sites in Eastern Europe, something that it had delayed for several years at Moscow’s insistence, and will complete that action before 2018.

4. The US has begun a new program of basing arms supplies in Eastern Europe and expanding military training and joint exercises there.

5. NATO has already increased its military presence throughout all of Eastern Europe from the Baltic to the Black Sea, with additional flights over the Baltic countries, NATO ships in the Black Sea, and larger and more frequent military exercises across the region.

6. The US for the first time is permanently basing US forces, in this case, so far, aviation units, in Poland.

7. The US is beginning a new partnership program with “friends of the US” Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia.

8. Obama has asked Congress for an additional appropriation of $1b to support these programs.

9. The US and NATO have begun a campaign to increase the military budgets of member countries up to a minimum of 2% of GDP.

10. The US has launched a program to increase energy exports to Europe and thus reduce the dependence of the latter on Russian supplies.

11.The US is promoting “other means” for the diversification of energy supplies to Europe.

12. The West has blocked the construction of the South Stream pipeline Putin has promoted.

13. The US is providing military support to Kyiv.

14. The US and other Western countries have declared that they will never recognize the Russian occupation of Crimea.

15. Obama has declared that any country which is a neighbour of Russia and is subject to aggression by Putin, “be it Ukraine, a NATO member country, Moldova or another,” will receive support from the US.

What is particularly important to note is that the majority of these measures will now be carried out independently of Putin’s actions in Ukraine and thus won’t be affected by any possible change in the Kremlin’s policy.

Personally i am really scared of the end result of this. there is only so much that all these sabre rattling will gain and then the unthinkable will happen. I also dont understand the stance of european on this , geopolitically. The intention of US with EU to isolate russia , for what purpose ? nothing good will come from this..

update June 10 - 2014

Three groups of Donetsk Republic soldiers (spetnatz or special purpose soldiers) , with the support 2 engineering machinery clearance (mine removers) attacked a Ukrainian fortified post, blocking the movement between Slaviansk and Kramatorsk.

Outcome of the battle: Militia snipers killed – 7 kiev soldiers, buried in trenches at least 14, wounded, including those hit by kiev's own artillery – about 30-35.
Rebel lost 1 soldier (driver from one of the engineering vehicles) hit by altilery/mortar from karachun mountain

Are you serious? You think that the feeble sanctions so far constitute a blockade, & hence a declaration of war? You equate it with Nasser's blockade of the Straits of Tiran?

Where are the USN ships blocking Russian ships from sailing out of their ports? How many foreign ships en route to Russia have been intercepted by US patrols & turned back?

THAT would be a blockade.

It hasn't happened, & it isn't going to happen.

BTW, I don't believe that letter. It reads like a pretty standard bit of black propaganda.

The lack of denial means nothing. If the US government denied every bit of garbage on the internet, it'd be too busy to do anything else. It only denies stuff it's noticed, & which it thinks is serious enough to be worth denying. Remember the story that USS Kitty Hawk was going to be sold to India? There was no US denial until a reporter asked the US defence secretary about it in a press conference. He looked surprised, & laughed. Up to that point, the US DoD had ignored the story, or maybe not even noticed it. Just another bit of internet junk.

i wont dismiss such info as junk right away, and i personally do not believe what the US gov representative said just because it is said officially. So many had been denied in the past that revealed to be the opposite in the modern times, at this game no one is to be trusted even the US goverment.

i remember the debacle of stealth drone hijacking above iran.. the usual denial came from US goverment right and a few people do not believe iranian have the capability to detect let alone hack the drone .. thats until the iranian showed the drone intact. There's even an aviation writer ( forgot his name ) that said if that drone really fell into iranian hand , thats like giving a ferrari to a chariot driven technology culture , thats writing really showed how some people getting to infatuated with western technology and looked down upon other people like inferior.

Hi, I am not defence professional, I am mathematician turned into software architect. I will try to maintain updates on situation in Eastern Ukraine compiled from Russian language sources, while Feanor is absent. I will probably disappear once he is back :) I will use list of links suggested by Feanor as my primary sources.
BTW Colonel Cassad site on live journal was blocked, and in read only mode. He moved his updates to

"voicesevas ". "ru"

I cannot post URLs, so one would have to turn my references to real links :(

Update on 09.06.2014 and 10.06.2014
During the night from 09.06.2014 to 10.06.2014 The town of Slavyansk was hit with heavy artillery 152 mm guns, 2S4 tulip mortars (240mm) and Grad MRLs. the bombardment continued for most of the night. Journalists from K.P. currently in the town report serious destruction and casualty between civilians at least 12 killed including children as yang as 4 years old, number of wounded measured in hundreds and counting.
The link below has some very graphic images:

"voicesevas . "
"ru/news/yugo-vostok/1562-ukrainskie-fashisty-ustroili-na-troicu-zhitelyam-slavyanska-nastoyaschuyu-krovavuyu-banyu.html"

From the words of senior surgeon of the Slavyansk's central hospital in last day or two they hospitalise 33 patients. That is 5%-7% from the total number wounded. The hospital as the whole town has no electricity and no water.
Newly elected Ukrainian president promised to establish humanitarian corridors to let civilians to escape the battle zone. No signs of such corridors exist. Civilians cannot safely leave Slavyansk.
I. Strelkov reports an rebels attack on block post between Slavyansk and Kramatorsk. Rebels utilised two IMRs (engineering and mines-swiping machine based on t-72 ?). They managed to get very close to the post and overrun it, destroying two heavy machine-guns plus one BTR as well as up to 20 soldiers and officers? (this numbers are different in different sources) Rebels lost mechanic-driver of one of the IMR killed and two fighters wounded. One of the IMR sustained some damage yet is reparable. Rebels also clime that they captured one howitzer gun during this operation.
Also 16:00 10.06.2014 Strelkov reports one destroyed Grad MRLs . During attack on block post near Red Liman

Also Strelkov mentioned that most of the medics decided to run from the town, heading to Donetsk . He ask for volunteers to fill for the missing doctors, promising assistance in getting into the town.

11.06.2014. Update
Ukrainian national guards organised picket in Kiev. List of their complains is long: lack of food, basic gear helmets, bulletproof vests, have to buy it with their own money or relay on help of friends and sponsors. They only received payment twice for the whole time, in amount far below those promised by government. They had to pay themselves for transportation to hospitals. On top of this their papers say that they are in reserve in some quiet places like Pavlograde, while in fact they spent the term around Slavyansk.

I cannot post URLs so links below would have to be slightly fixed in apparent way :)

"twower"."livejournal.com/1325372.html"

Ukrainian State Health Department reports 220 killed from the beginning of the operation. Totally uncleared who is counted and how.

"twower.livejournal"."com/1325723.html"
The following article by Mark Franchetti from "The Sunday Times", describes details of fight between "Vostok " and Border guards at Marinovka. Interestingly when "Vostok"'s fighters took cover from aerial attack on Russian territory they were disarmed and arrested by Russian border guards.

"twower"."livejournal.com/1324873.html"

Rebels attempted to take tank base A-2730 in Artemovsk. The base hold vast storage of conserved armour ranging from T-34 to T-80BV. The attempt to talk commanders into surrender failed. The commanding officer of the base wounded.

"bmpd". "livejournal.com/883942.html"

Rebels blockaded around 2000 strong force in Lugansk Airport According to "Voice of Sevastopol" Rebels hold talk with blockaded about conditions of surrender. Rebels warn that they cut water and food from the Ukrainian force, take down any supply plain and ensure Airport is sealed from the ground and air. However it is very unclear if rebels actually have enough force to fulfil their threats .

"voicesevas"."ru/news/yugo-vostok/1595-opolchenie-lnr-provodit-operaciyu-po-ochistke-aeroporta-luganska-ot-voysk-hunty.html"

One Ukrainian official Tatiana Chornovil in interview to RBK-Ukraine reported that Ukrainian air force after few month of operation now only have 10 operational helicopters left . She also mentioned that in the beginning of the operation air force had 19 hellos.

"voicesevas"."ru/news/yugo-vostok/1605-ostalos-sbit-vsego-10-vertoletov.html"

Igor Strelkov reports:
Humanitarian aid from trusted friends arrived in Slavyansk. helmets, bulletproof vests, other ammunition.
Last day in Slavyansk was quiet. There was only occasional bombardments from Karachun mountain. There are major problems with communications and internet in particular. There is no water. Few areas have electricity (household generators ?)
Alexander Kocs reported that while being in Semenovka, on outskirts of Slavyansk , they again encountered Ukrainian sniper tank gunner, "goldsmith" as they call him. According to rebels fighters they barely manage to escape. Yet the gunner commands some respect as he, very uncommonly for usual Ukrainians solders, never hit civilian targets.
