He's one of the best sources on the Russian military, that I've come across in my internet wanderings. He's got extensive service experience at the enlisted level, and has spent several years publishing buckets and buckets of inside info gathered from personal visits and interviews with service members.

I think there are mercenaries in Ukraine. I doubt they're actively involved in combat ops, but it's possible. They'd have to be very careful to avoid capture or even revelation.

I've read reports of this type of behavior, but I have no objective confirmations.
As for shooting civilians, that has been the case though no systematically. There has been a series of ugly incidents involving National Guard and Right Sector shooting civilians, that tried to blockade the units or chase them out of town.

The soldiers uniforms and weapons don't match, many of the vehicles don't work.
The food is terrible, the water is dirty, and there is no opportunity to shower or wash clothing. Even field kitchens are absent. They frequently have to buy food from local stores, and their paychecks are tiny, requiring money to be sent from home.

It,s curious and pathetic the silence of western mass media about the criminal bombing of civilians by the Kiev junta yesterday in Lugansk city center, this is the "western democracy" impossed by USA. The videos are there but I am sure they will be deleted soon maybe someone can see the reality and not the american propaganda about the situation in Ukraine.
I think the airstrike in Lugansk was a trial run. It's the first such airstrike. It's basically the first time a fixed-wing aircraft delivers payload to a target. It's in a populated area, and the intent is to see how everyone reacts to this. I think more will follow now that there is no general and violent outrage.
The video deleting is a bit alarming. Youtube regularly deleted videos posted by the rebel side in general, and it's not a good trend. It means information will disappear.

Russia has tried to run a humanitarian aid resolution on Ukraine through the UN but it didn't work. It was turned down because it lacked references to Ukrainian territorial sovereignty.

Fighting is continuing in and around Slavyansk and Kramatorsk. According to some rebel sources, Kramatorsk is seeing serious fighting.

According to this 40% of the civilian population has left Slavyansk. Somewhat surprising given repeated statement about civilians caught in the fighting. According to this it's mainly the older population that refuses to leave.

Just so you know, this post is relatively short not because few things are happening but because reliable info is lacking. Some of the heaviest fighting so far has begun around Slavyansk and government airstrikes are ongoing against Lugansk. Casualties both military and civilian are on the rise, and fixed-wing aircraft are being used systematically for the first time since this conflict began.
