What is the status of the tender as of today? In 2000 Turkey had competitions for a new MBT with 1,000 orders standing. Ukraine and Germany were the leading contenders. As of last year nothing had been deicded. Any news as of now?

I think they made the decision to buy the Leo 2, but have yet to place the order due to financial difficulties.

The first project was cancelled. A second one with a revised RfI to produce new generation main battle tanks is underway. Undersecretariat of Defense Industries authorized the consortium of BMC-Otokar-FNSS to prepare a feasibility report on tank production in Turkey, covering solutions from license building to fully indigenous design. After the report is submitted, the consortium was broken up into two: FNSS+BMC and Otokar. Both parties will submit their own solutions with a foreign industrial partner. Foreign partner will provide technical assitance, technology transfer, license, etc.

250 tanks will be produced in the first batch. Meanwhile deliveries of 298 surplus German Leopard 2A4 tanks is underway. Deliveries will be concluded in mid 2007.

You have too many zeros in there. $100 billion would buy the biggest tank fleet in the world.

Force 2014 is a project covering modernization and evolution of entire Turkish Armed Forces, it's not the name of tank project.

By the way latest info on the tank tender, the meeting of Defence Industry Executive Commitee is to take place in March. BMC+FNSS and Otokar had submitted their proposals including one foreign technical support provider for each party. The decision on the project is expected to be taken in the meeting.

It is planned that the first prototype will be built in 2009 and all tests to be completed by 2012-2013. The decision on the serial produciton is to be taken then and to be started in 2013-2014.

Why dosnt turkey just modernise the M48 or M60 patton tanks into SABRA tanks
They're modernising a limited number of M60 into M60T (the official designation), but it isn't worth upgrading all of them. The newer M60 are worth upgrading because they're still in good enough condition that you can re-use a large proportion of the tank, & you have plenty of spares for the parts you're keeping.

The M48 (which have already been upgraded once) & some of the M60 are too old & worn out: you end up replacing everything except the hull, & what's the point of that? It's not the most expensive bit. There comes a point in upgrading where you're spending 90% of the price of a new tank to get a tank with 80% of the performance. You'll never get quite the same performance as is possible with a new tank, because of the limitations of the basic design.

They have to be returned to the USA, or disposed of with US approval. That's a standard condition of sale for US weapons. They'll probably be scrapped, eventually.

I think Lebanons M48s were given (not sold) by the USA.

Just think about who really wants heavily used M48s...

Maybe some african states for free but everyone else?
