Latest edition of APDR with link to SEA1000 article to take your minds of Pauline Hanson!

https://venturaapdr.partica.online/apdr/apdr-november-2017/flipbook/10/

Also, a good article on the Aegis combat system selection for the future frigate, Interestingly, mention is made of speculation surrounding the fitment of the entire combat suite to the AWDs during major upgrade.

The constant misrepresentation and implied costs for Defence projects really really urks me ! I know APDR are not the best but they should know better, this constant crap reporting over program costs, and the then implied unit costs is pathetic, no wonder the general public have an even less understanding on the subject and why this type of tripe is taken as fact !

Rant over, won't change anything when you have morons from a supposed Defence magazine putting this crap out there either !

Interesting the USN has excluded the Type 26 from consideration in its FFG(X) programme by clarifying what is meant by a "parent design".

FREMM and the F-5000 could both find themselves being put forward as contenders.

It will be interesting to see what sort of influence the Australian SEA 5000 decision could have on this. I would imagine that the winning design could tick a lot of boxes for the FFG(X) program.

Does anyone have any updates on SEA1180? When is an announcement due? What would be the most likely/unlikely of options?
I don't think that there is a set date for the announcement of the winning design.
There has been a lot of speculation - and it is only that, so make of it what you will.
We have been presented with only the barest of information in the public domain and are not privy to what has been the detailed offerings to gov't.
If the bidders stick to what has been made public, then in my opinion the Fassmer offering - with its hanger - must be in with a strong chance. However, I am unsure whether Damen or Lürssen offered a hanger, but if all else is equal this would be a big plus for the Fassmer design.

Without wishing to get too political, I think the Government is a tad too pre-occupied with it’s own immediate survival to worry too much about defence capability right now.

There were rumours this announcement would come at the end of October, well the PM has just jetted off to Israel for a week and I can’t see this announcement happening without him being there, flanked by Payne and Pyne... So I think we can pretty much forget that rumour...

You would have to think the decision is imminent. Time is running out for a decision to be made this year and I can't see this decision being held over to next year.

I don't know as the by-election will affect the timing of this announcement.

My tip would be the Austal/Fassmer bid will get up. Not only is its offering probably the strongest contender but Austal has a proven ability to generate export sales, and that alone would probably give them a big edge. If you want a sustainable shipbuilding industry you can't just rely on local orders and so far Austal has a good track record of generating foreign sales.

Have Austal built much in Steel? Maybe stuff for the oil and gas industry?

If not, wouldn't it be a bit of a learning curve compared to what they have done in the past? Vessels built to different standards, etc. Could increase cost.

They are currently building the steel hulled Pacific Patrol Boats.

Fassmer and ASC both have the experience and people if needed. Fassmer and Austal are already tied up with this and if it came to it based on the deal with SEA5000 I wouldn't rule out Austal and ASC expanding that to SEA1180 if it was in there interest to do so. Austal and ASC both looking for increased defence exports, I imagine both there boards would realize it's better to work together then against each other.

I wouldn't be surprised if there was an announcement later this year, in November.
Its exactly what the government needs. Plus they have to be imminent, they start building (or working towards building) them pretty soon.

From what is publicly available, the Fassmer has my vote, but there is little hard public information to go on for the Damen proposal, while I could build a dream proposal out of the Damen catalog, I doubt that is what is being put forward.

Sea5000 is the big one. I really feel F-5000 is in a strong position on this. I expect once sea5000 is confirmed, there will be a swag of new projects and proposals, to take advantage of that kind of capability.

I also think the F-105 is a valid FFG(X) proposal, if you wanted to build a cheaper, smaller ship out of the Burke principles and systems, you basically end up with the F-105. It would be valid to benchmark a NSC frigate against it. Which then would be a contest of really what are your design priorities are.

So I expect the back end of November to be a busy time for Navy announcements.

Which are the first steel hulled vessels they have built. Hull 1 is in consolidation now. I have reservations about this but at least Fassmer will be on hand if they get it. I would not write of Damen folks. They have a great record of effective managed build in other countries.

Hi alexsa

We all have our favourite contenders, but this little article in DTR reinforces the point Damen can sell ships.

Hopefully a decision for SEA 1180 very soon.

I dealt 600kg will make much of a difference. Has been my experience in life that such limitations dont actually give an accurate representation of what the device can perform but rather it being a safe number put in place to keep the lawyers happy.

Should also note that the 10.6 ton of the MRH is for a fully loaded aircraft, with 4.2 ton of fuel, persons and cargo, When operating from an OPV I can imagine any scenario that would require that max load out.

HADR mission might see it get close to a max load out.
