That defence officer looked like he was about to explode. I am constantly amazed at how such an obvious dullard as Hanson keeps getting re-elected.

Unfortunately she's the tip of the iceberg. There are many, mainly in the Senate, politicians who would be unemployable elsewhere and that goes across the political spectrum but heavily represented in the cross bench.
I live in the Northern Territory and thank God we only have two Senators, if the think the quality from Tasmania's 12 is bad, imagine.....he'll I have a migraine.

Fortunately, attendance in the Senate chamber is poor so damage is minimal and the Commons can over-ride their decisions. Mind you, considering the people sitting in the Commons that is not much of a consolation.

A little more of Pauline's inciteful questioning of Admiral Sammut.

In two minutes she fails to understand the difference between pump jet propulsion and a diesel engine, seems to be of the opinion that the new submarines can only stay submerged for 20 minutes and fails to comprehend why a submarine's performance characteristics would be considered classified information.

In spite having all this explained to her I have no doubt that this airhead will come out in the next couple of days with the same nonsense in an attempt to score a few political brownie points.

Us kiwis got rid of our upper house about 60 - 70 years ago. It was known as the Legislative Council and its members appointed by the PM. A cunning PM convinced the Council to vote itself out of existence.

That was so painful! I only wish every person who thinks of voting for this person watches this video and makes an assessment of her competence and intelligence.
You don't need to know anything about submarines but you do need a basic intelligence to absorb what people are telling you.
Admiral Zammit may as well have been talking to a donkey.

I agree with the need to keep politics out of a thread except in situations when the political discussion is directly related to the subject matter covered in the thread. In this case the senate committee was questioning a senior RAN officer about what is arguably Australia's largest ever naval procurement project so IMHO it is relevant. The last thing the RAN needs is for any politician of any persuasion to use a senate committee to undermine or derail the submarine project without listening to and certainly not comprehending the answers given. I would also expect a committee member to have done at least some basic research before subjecting an RAN admiral to such inane questions.

What a disgrace and embarrassment. As tax-payers, can't we hold our elected officials accountable to some kind of performance standards (I'm talking about 'Senator' Hanson here, not RADM Samut)? DIsgraceful.

China Successfully Tests First Submarine Permanent Magnet Motor

BEIJING --- China successfully tested its first permanent magnet propulsion motor for vessels recently, according to the State-owned China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), which is known for manufacturing China's first aircraft carrier and the Jiaolong submersible vessel.

The CSIC released the news on its official WeChat public account that the No. 712 Research Institute of the CSIC successfully completed the test on its first permanent magnet propulsion motor for vessels on Oct 18 and all the performance indicators met the technical requirements.

It is said that the permanent magnet motor will greatly improve the mute performance of China's submarine, especially nuclear submarine, which means that, with the newly developed permanent magnet motor, the Chinese nuclear submarine is expected to become one of the world's quietest ones .

The news said the test of China's first permanent magnet motor with complete intellectual property rights achieved a successful result in Sanya City, south China's Hainan Province, at 11 am on October 18, laying a solid foundation for future tests.

The CSIC didn’t disclose the type of the submarine using the permanent magnet motor or the performance of the permanent magnet propulsion motor in the news.

However, a Chinese military expert said that the first permanent magnet propulsion motor was supposed to be installed on China’s homegrown conventional submarines, even though China has nuclear submarines and Russia-made Type 636 submarines at the naval base in Sanya.

The expert said that the motor used in conventional submarines has the power of several megawatts, but he still cannot determine the exact power of the installed test model.

Permanent magnet propulsion motor technology can replace the reduction gears and significantly reduce the running sound to the lowest possible level, the expert said.

On the global scale, the permanent magnet motor will have the power to meet the needs of full electrical movement for nuclear submarines.

China’s development of permanent magnet motor started in the 1990s. The news released by the CSIC means that China has made a great breakthrough in that field, the expert added.

If Rex Patrick really is Xenophons replacement in the senate I imagine the RAN senior sirs are going to have even more to dread.

Something that crossed my mind today is whether MPs are actually vetted in any way, i.e. Security clearances etc? You would think if this happened the citizenship thing and other issues would not have come up as they have.

One thing I noticed with the whole Pauline Hanson senate enquiry thing is that she seemed blissfully unaware of What constituted classified information. I suspect that there are also quite a few other ratbag senators of all political persuasions that might either be ignorant of what constitutes national security or might even be actively working against it in order to push their own political agendas.
