Exactly, its a matter of National security, which is why I brought up the topic in the first place. And our benign environment is well and truly over I'd say. I have no problems with extra spying powers being given to our GCSB, police etc to catch would be terrorists. It could have just as easily been a plane hijacking like 911 scenario,or an attack on shipping too, and we have neither an armed response , in plane's or ships in adequate numbers to stop either.
Absolutely - We are undermnanned, underequipped and underresourced. A good start for the South Island would be to expand Burnham - provide a SAS group and some choppers A109's or NH90's. The North Island will require further expansion and funding. We might finally become defense orientated enabling us as a nation to become AWARE and PREPARED

@Xthenaki & @kiwipatriot69 You guys are really pushing it when a Moderator has given specific instructions, especially when that Moderator made a prior suggestion. Consider this a warning for failing to follow a Moderators instructions.

I have created a new thread for this topic to be specifically discussed.

To address a new direction from Christchurch regarding terrorism and expanding our military assets to cover quicker response to a potential crisis nationally - shpuld this go to the "off topic section"
Reading through the thread the subject matter people have been posting over the last couple of days it was more about ways to deal with the perpetrator than any actual meaningful discussions on national security.

If the topic strictly relates to security solutions related then post it here - but if folk want to go off this reservation as the postings of late have been - such as discussion of the death penalty and persons personal favourite ways of dealing to the terrorist and so forth - go off topic.

I see your point, no worries.

With all due respect I make the following comment.

With the end of March but a few hours away I have to expect that the recent events in Christchurch have interrupted the normal flow of business from Wellington. One can hope that April may be the month for the release of the DCP.

Or maybe this event will have an impact on the DCP and it is being modified to suit the situation.

You know as much as we do. The PM is currently in Beijing, arriving there this arvo and due back Tuesday. Defence is not high on this govt priority list and never has been.

Thank you Ngatimozart for the above list of MOD publications. In your review of them did you notice any news of the RNZN thank you?

No probs. No separate news relating to RNZN, however I haven't waded my way through all of them yet either.

With the turnaround on CGT a few of the politicians egos would have taken a knock. The potential CGT "Cash cow" is lost affecting both Labour and Green policies. On decision making Winston is still very much there. In effect a major cornerstone for this government. I hope this will place emphasis on the well researched and essential Bills that await approval (Defence acquisitions). A lot more thought will be needed in promoting any Bill for approval as any further turnarounds could create a political fiasco

Defence acquisitions do not require a Bill before The House per se. They do need Cabinet approval and that is another story. Cabinet has had other issues to deal with like the Christchurch terrorist attacks and it's subsequent ramifications, plus sorting out various messes that some Ministers have made of much vaunted policies. Therefore, Defence not being a high priority portfolio just keeps being pushed further down the to do list. That's my reading of it. Unfortunately we have a govt who are administratively disorganised and have no idea about formulating workable policy, something that they should've been doing during the nine years that they spent in opposition.

Ngati thanks for the clarification

Well it looks like someone has officially popped the question regarding the Defence Capability Plan that has gone MIA (twice): should get a reply from the Minister by 9 May.

Date for Submission of Defence Capability Plan Review to Cabinet - a Official Information Act request to Ron Mark

Ok, that name is familiar. Ex NZDF, was reportedly in a 'very close' relationship with MP Heather Roy when she was Defence Minister. Had some problem getting a security clearance, if memory serves.

He used to run a skydiving business in and around the Wairarapa and Paraparaumu, in the 1990s. He and Heather Roy were (are?) partners in a strategy/policy consultancy.

Another month has gone by and still no DCP? How far down the priority list is defence? This is brutal. So much to do just to provide a minimum level of service to the country and those men and women in uniform.

This is why I could never run for political office as I cant deal with a lack of decision making.

Maybe the new Manawanui is bringing the DCP with her as she progresses across ths Pacific?
