26 lifetime student of all things military and have served in combat. Question for previous new user, what was your opinion on TU refusal to allow US forces passage for northern front in OIF and what would have been the potential outcomes if it had been permitted?

I think it refused because of 3 reason,
1. GW-1 caused a lot of economical loss for Turkey which US promised to effort comparetion but never did.
2. Turkey didn't want a mandatory coorperation with kurds.
3. Current goverment was very unexprienced to take responsibility, they looked to Military but military didn't want to lead the goverment because of EU process.

But most important thing which make me suspicous about what happened is mass media which is close to USA (somes are direct US investments like CNN-TURK, CNBC-e, NTV-MSNBC) boosted anti-american sentiment in the public, so I think US or CIA wanted Turkey out of game for some reason.

Hmm some very good points emrahg, the kurdish issue surely must have been an important factor. Very interesting about CIA take but i cant see why we would want to keep you out of this one. Perhaps as we're saving that alliance for later mid-east actions. What is TU stance against Iran and do you think a war with that state might provide the oppertunity to funnel Kurdish national expansionism east? I had read that TU is annoyed with EU treatment and may now be looking more towards US what is the general feeling about this?

Really I dunno what they have in their mind. Maybe in this way they keep Turkey in a distance to kurds and they could claim Turkey for not helping to an ally for future concessions. Infact, except troop deployment, Turkey made all logistic support. Opened air spaces etc..

Turkey and iran are revals in the region, our interests usually clash. But Iran is not Iraq, even they were enemy they were respected enemies for us, so a war with Iran would be very destructive and our ppl would be most effected with their lives and money. (like a war between Canada and USA) Even ottomans in their most strong era couldn't invade iran completely. So Turkey is not supporting it. And yes it could boost kurdish nationalism on east as well it could cause a rebellion in azeri turks(%35-40 of total population) in iran. There would be azeri-kurd clashes in iran in a possible post-mullah era which would force Turkey and iraqi kurds to involve. Worse, US could back kurds in this possible clash while TU back turks. So things could go out of control.
Infact , Turkey is always seeking further coorperation with USA but USA plans in ME is unknown and seem against our national interests and national security. And when it is unknown it cause a lot of conspiracy theories. So current position couldn't leave much room for cooperation in ME. Maybe USA could be more open on their plans and TU and USA could meet on interests which would satisfy both sides. But I think our current goverment is not suitable for it. They have islamist roots.
Lets come to EU, Turkey has 3-4 main national problems which are kurdish problem, cyprus problem, armenian problem , So we expect that a friend must be on our side if its possible, if its not it must stay neutral but not in the other side but EU is always in the other side volunterily, so this become very annoying for our ppl. This is a proof that they will be against us on all our future problems and interests.

Hello all,

It may seem weird but it's my job to collect military info, most of it is available on the internet. I'm reading the "DefenceTalk.com - Defense News and Information Newsletter" every day. DefenceTalk is a usefull source, but there are more ;) .
I've created a weblog to save the interesting stuff (kind of a notepad), the url is http://nosint.blogspot.com, it might be usefull to others as well.

I'll be here often.
