Avalon Airshow Press Release:

Two United States Navy Super Hornets are poised to swoop on the Australian International Airshow at Avalon in March. They represent the latest word in airborne military technology and will be put through their very impressive paces on each of the public days of the event. Their appearance at Avalon will afford enthusiasts an up close and personal look at the warplane that may soon be the backbone of the RAAF’s strike capability. The Federal Government has expressed interest in buying at least 24 Super Hornets as a bridging option between the retirement of the F-111s and the acquisition of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Following a spectacular flying display, the two state-of-the-art combat aircraft will be available for closer inspection on the ground. By any standards the Super Hornet packs a powerful sting. Its onboard cannon is supplemented by an array of bombs, rockets, air-to-air missiles and airto-ground munitions. It flies at almost twice the speed of sound and has a service ceiling of 50-thousand feet. The aircraft was developed by Boeing during the mid-1990s as a carrier borne multirole fighter. The first Super Hornets off the assembly line were phased into service with the United States Navy, which ordered more than 400 of them for its carrier air wings. On its previous appearance at Avalon, the Super Hornet literally stole the show with a highenergy tribute to the afterburner, rarely seen at a public event. The Australian International Airshow 2007 will be held between the 20 th and 25 th of March (public days 23 rd to 25 th March). The event attracts many tens of thousands of people into the Geelong region, who typically take out time to visit the many tourist treasures the city and surrounds have to offer.

They are really promoting it this year.

I'll be coming all the way from across the ditch in kiwiland for it. Really looking forward to it as well. I just hope I can get my new digital camera in time.

Looking forward to what the US will be bringing down if they are not too busy. Flights from Moorabbin to Avalon this year are $180 return for one engine, $240 return for 2 engines. makes no difference, 2 engined plane with 6 fat blokes in it is going down on one engine, same as a single engine with no engine. Helicopter is $750 return, YIKES!

Nothing showing in ".mil" posts anywhere yet. Only no time limits and a single BAK-12 arresting system in place.

CFS = Central Flying School which runs the Roulettes, so it's probably the Roulettes staging out of Pt Cook for aeros over Melbourne for the long weekend.

No, Roulettes were in Melbourne yesterday too.

The Perth display was given by a formation flight from 1FTS based at Pearce. Similar looking planes without the vertical component of the Roulette's show.

The Roulettes have been performing at the Royal Hobart Regatta and Wooden Boat Festival for the last three days. I thought their routine was excellent, more exciting than I remember from last year, so they should be in good form for Avalon.

BTW I'm looking forward to the Regatta highlight tonight which will be an F111 doing a vertical dump and burn. With HMAS Newcastle in the background and the Pig going straight up like a rocket it should be a spectacular sight.

The F111 was ultra spectacular. After the fireworks finished it flew up river at low altitude, and began its dump and burn as it came in over the harbour before sweeping over the Regatta Ground and then going into a near vertical climb. The burn continued for a fair while. Nearest thing to a space shuttle take off I've seen. Unfortunately I was too excited to take a photo!

Is the F111 dump and burn at Avalon performed in the daylight or at night as was the case in Hobart?
