Why the Navy does not update this page (http://www.marina.difesa.it/programmi/index.htm) with the Fremm project ?

Does anyone know the main features of this class? Pictures?
Navy site is very rarely updated on the new ships part :( , except for the pictures of the new Doria DDG at the end of the dedicated page.
Even for Cavour pictures are 2+ years old :lul

Anyway, go to AIAD.it site (defence industries site)

Giuseppe Bono at Euronaval said FREMM costruction will start at the end of 2007
Forcieri (in charge of Navy planning at Ministry of Defence) confirmed laying down of first 2 FREMM simultaneously Nov 2007 at Riva Trigoso.
By the way, I've got the official list of investment for the Navy :
> 209.9 mln euro for FREMMs (plus the 50 mln which are off budget)
> 209.9 mln euro for completion of Cavour
> 247.8 mln euro for completion of Horizon DDGs
> 42.1 mln euro for completion of first 2 U212A
> 50.4 mln euro for FSAF, PAAMs, TESEO
> 4 mln euro for MU90
> 9.1 mln euro for Vulcano
> 2.6 mln euro for R&D
> 35.7 mln euro for logistics & infrastructure
> 33.7 mln euro for MLU of De la Penne and Maestrale
The NH90, EH101, JSF F35B and AV8BII+ programmes are in the air force part.

cheers

PS no new programmes yet :( since priority is to solidify existing programmes such as FREMM before committing to 4th LPDH or the next batch of U212. Though both could be included next year in the 2008 budget.

Well done, Italy. It appears Italy will be maintaining its naval strength. However, I do wish Italy and France could afford at least another Horizon AWD, bringing their total up to three. While 4 is a very nice number, 3 is a magic number, whereas 2 may not be enough.

The new FREMM frigates are going to be awesome.

Has Italy ever named any of their warships after cities?

Well I would be very happy to see more Horizons built, but at the same time let's not forget that the Italian FREMMs carry Sylver A50 (or 70 if we buy Scalp Naval) and EMPAR. This means that Aster 30 can be loaded and guided towards target almost as well as if they came from an Horizon. The "almost" is due to the absence of the S1850 long range air search radar. Though EMPAR's range and the presence of a RAN40S air search radar almost make up for that absence.
If you agree with this, one could almost say we'll have 12 AAW ships ;)

Italy has named battleships "Roma" in the past. The last one is a Vittorio Veneto type battleship sunk by the Germans in 1943 after the Armistice.
Vittorio Veneto itself is a city, though it is mostly known as the battlefield where the Italian army defeated the Austro-Hungarian troops at the end of World War 1.
Other than these 2 exceptions, our 12 mine hunters carry names of coastal cities (Lerici and Gaeta classes).

cheers

I can't believe it :D that smart guy Forcieri is selling a ship that resembles very much to our 4th LPDH to a left-leaning Parliament by calling it a "hospital ship" :D :D :D
Let's see the details, but it would be an amazing accomplishment !
At worst, even if it weren't big enough to be a LPDH, it will be a useful complement to our support forces, halfway between a Etna AOR and a San Marco LPDH.

I dream a new version of U-212 with VLS like the "Amur 950 VLS" class submarine, VLS filled up with Tomahawk it will be an "a cost effective" strategic weapons. :D

my dreams too, a 3750 ton displacement hdw type 214,with water ram expulsion torpedo tubes also capable of firing missiles, vls for brahmos(atleast 10),underwater launched surface to air missiles (vls mica),poly electro membrane fuel cells(range of 12000 nms),titanium alloy construction offering greater diving depth, modular construction, compatibility with uuv's ,submarine escape systems (similiar to the one on the indian navy hdw type 209),thales non hull penetrating optronics mast, elint /comint systems based on the israeli dolphin submarines, rolls royce designed diesel engines(i believe that are called as the mtr30 and are considered to be amongst the best) and finally rolls royce designed pump jet propulsor.

Yes, hull sonar in the "bulge" is the TUS 4110-CL bow mounted sonar.
There is also a mine avoidance sonar.
The 4 Italian ASW FREMMs will also have a VDS and perform multi-static operations exploiting the low frequency towed array and the HELRAS helicopter low-frequency dipping sonar. The ships will also have the SLAT anti-torpedo detection system.
All 10 ships will have MU90 torpedoes and B525/12 torpedo-decoy launchers.
Last but not least, the helo hangars can take 1 EH-101 and 1 NH90 (or 2 NH90 of course).

Honestly I prefer having 6-8 U212A SSKs ...
The Amur design is great for export to countries needing coastal SSKs, but our Navy needs larger ASW SSKs primarily.
For land attack I would order SCALP Naval for the FREMMs. We already have Storm Shadow for the Tornado and Typhoon, it would be foolish not to order its naval version SCALP Naval for our Navy...
