We are all expectant to see our Aircraft Carrier sail :D :D :shudder
I'll be close to La Spezia early December, but I sure hope that pictures will have been shared over the internet before then...
Last time I asked the superstructure is completed and workers are to be seen only around the Aster VLS.

What I'd like to know even more urgently is the split between programmes of the new defence budget, supposing that the government manages to survive the Senate vote...

Good idea to post them here, thks
The ship is almost operational, though there remain a few things left to do :
- integrate the ciws system based on the 76/62 SR davide/strales CIWS
- test the Aster & Empar radars with live fire
- start carrier operations with Harriers (so far mostly EH101s have been used to test landing operations
By early 2008 the ship will have gone through all this and we'll have 2 carriers.
Forza Italia ;)

Yes 2 modern stovl carriers that alongside the 2 new Horizon class AAW Destroyers and the 2 new U212A submarines is not bad for MMI.
Many navies in the world can feel envy.
Hope the new 4th lpd will be soon announced as a new class of Aviso. :) :)

The new LPD (or LHD actually) should be ordered next year together with a new AOR. The LHD will be built most likely in conjunction with Turkey and the AOR together with India (though all ships are likely to be built in Italy)

Good point. With Fincantieri's successful foray into luxury mega-yachts (which are built in the military shipyards of Fincantieri at Riva Trigoso) we won't be able to build simultaneously more than 2 FREMM, 1 LHD and 1 U212A (this last one in Muggiano shipyard).
So we are almost at full capacity if LHD and 2nd batch of U212A materialize.

Are there any future plans for the three San Giorgio LPDs?

I know they're only 15-20 years old, but how do they fit into future structures, and is there any replacement for them planned in the next 15-20 years yet? Will the LHD take over part of their role?

Actually the navy has been requesting a 4th LPD (which now should be a LHD) for about 10 years now but funding problems/priorities had derailed the programme.
Since the San Giorgio are relatively small ideally they should be replaced by a class of 3 20,000-tonne LHDs, but for the moment this is only a vague requirement.
Expect around 2015 the LHD to join the 3 existing LPDs and no new construction until 2020 as priorities will go to new AORs (and of course FREMM and U212A 2nd batch).

Ah Thanks a lot !
I see that the good spot next to the entrance of the Fincantieri Muggiano shipyard's parking is becoming crowded with Paginedidifesa photographers ;) :D

All that's missing now is the 76/62s. Since there is already a good half of the permanent crew on board, a couple of EH101s and AV8B+ on the flight deck would be welcome !

cheers
