New Brit aircraft carrier names

I don't know if anybody else caught this, but the two new RN carriers ("CVF Design") will be named HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince Of Wales. Source is the Ministry Of Defense, UK.

They haven't even been designed or ordered yet; so it seems a bit premature to be assigning names, but whatever.

Well very prestigious names, though they carry some bad luck... we all remember what happened to the Prince of Wales in 1942 in Asia and to the Queen Elizabeth in Alexandria (sorry guys that's us who sunk her).

Why not name the ships after the great Royal Navy admirals ? My oh my, Nelson or Drake, or even Cunningham (we Italians don't like what he did to us in WW2, but we do admit he's great !) ...

cheers

Or Ark Royal again. There are a lot of names: Warspite, Vanguard, Rodney, and of course Nelson. Then there are fictional names such as Hornblower. Oh well Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales will suffice.

What's holding up the order?

Same old stuff, budget, price creeps, definition of design, design creep etc etc

I think to be fair they are 90% there, but it is always the last 10%.

It had been RN tradition to name the first capital ship in a new class after the current monarch. This tradition wasn't followed with the Invincible class carriers, so it does make sense to follow along with the up coming carriers.

The King George V during WWII is an example of the tradition. I'd have to check on the other ships.

If that was the case it should have been Queen Elisabeth II... I think they're offically named after previous capital ships.

The Invincible were labelled 'through deck cruisers' and were at the time not considered capital ships as such. Perhaps to maintain an illusion so that they could get funded by the pollies, who had an adversion towards capital ships...

Geez the poms won't like their two brand spanking new carriers being listed as HMAS at all. :D
No, we will not!

I wonder what PA2 will be called? They toyed with calling PA1 (now Charles de Gaulle) Richelieu. Good name, I think. But wait a moment- AFAIK, there's never been a French warship called Napoleon Bonaparte. Time to correct the omission, peut-etre? :D

Hold On

Hold on that article has the CVF's at 3 Billion pounds, yet the Upgrade of 12 nimrods aircraft to MR4 is costing 3.5 Billion pounds? If this is correct what a total screw up to put it politely, shows the priorities of the Gov and the massive mess, what a joke, if its bad reporting then fine, won't dont they screw the Nimrod upgrade order and get 12 P-8's I'm sure that wouldn't come in more than 1.5 Billion Pound for 12 would it???

I guess you're referring to the Nimrod MR4... That has been a really expensive project. But then again, I get the feel that the Brits consider those aircraft very, very important. Creme de la creme.

Don't know the figures, though.

I always thought they were a cracker aircraft, however at the expense of other projects well...

On the names I like them, however I would love to see the next class name after some Admirals or some of the other "classics"

For the French carrier Richelieu is still in "pole position" though a re-run of Clemenceau or Foch is also plausible. Other big names that could be used are Jean Bart (a WW2 battleship referring to a famous French sea captain of the 18th century), Dunkerque or Strasbourg (other WW2 battleships), ...

au revoir ;)

I vote for Sedan.
Would be a little bit surprising but unique. :D
Be careful you could get a FREMM class full of Austerlitz, Jena, Marne, Somme, and other victories ;)

Seriously I believe only successful admirals' names belong on capital ships. That's why for the UK carriers I'd put Nelson and Drake, and for the French carrier I'd put Jean Bart (one hell of a seaman !)

cheers

No offence, but this is very old news - names were out months ago. But it isn't premature because designs have been made and the MoD is serious about getting them - final designs and costs are to be submitted by the end of the month. It's expected they'll be approved.
