Is STOVL worth the trouble?

More like pushed into service despite many unresolved issues. But I'm not criticizing the F-35 performance. I'm sure it's a superb aircraft. What I try to point out here is that, if F-35 was not design with STOVL in mind, It may not suffer as much problem as it is now. The development cost alone is far higher than the more capable F-22. There's reason why many countries which embarked on supersonic VTOL program ditched it in the end.
I'm not sure you can extrapolate some of your assumptions to what you see as the logical conclusions.....

eg USMC, USN req for STOVL still applies - and they're catered for on the amphibs as part of expeditionary support

the development cost compared to F-22 is only relevant if the conops reqs were the same - and they are fundamentally different. eg there is not maritime version of F-22, it was never designed for hard and hard launches and traps, to do so would have changed the overall platform to a point where inherent strengths would have been chewed away by certification reqs for carrier and LHA capability

and the reason why most countries abandoned STOVL was that they didn't have the individual critical mass and fleet reqs to support the cost to develop - hence why initial attraction to the US doing the dev heavy lifting

ultimately it also changes as STOVL didn't necessarily fit inside a lot of countries future force development for maritime reqs. ie fundamentals of conops apply

"The purchase of new fighter jets is to be speeded up, Chancellor George Osborne said, as he promised funding to ensure the Royal Navy can deploy one if its new aircraft carriers at all times by 2023....

...The Government had proposed to have only eight of the US-built F35 Joint Strike Fighter aircraft available for deployment to the new carriers HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales by 2023.

That has now been trebled to 24 - all in strike roles if required - with the 18 others on order being used in the training fleet or in maintenance, the Chancellor told the Sunday Times.

Capability could be temporarily "surged" to 39 jets to respond to specific threats..."

Nah, can't be true, I've been told many times on another forum that we'll never see more than a half dozen on deck and I'm a deluded idiot for believing otherwise :)

Seriously, that's good news, a logical and welcome announcement.

are you going to exercise the option of diving back into that forum - doing a lazarus on the relevant thread and sitting back with popcorn :)

Nah. There's one thing that will get me back in there and that's the first live fire shot of an SM2 from DDG1000. Some Powerpoint warrior announced the Zumwalts couldn't use them and when I pointed out that ICWI works fine for a slightly modified SM2, and posted a link to an order for a quantity of that very thing, for that very destroyer, he got very shirty.

Revenge, a dish best served frequently.

Exactly :)

It's a good bit of news for the UK mind you, plus the P8 announcement appears to be a thing which is actually a bit of a result.

Time? 14:30 BST every day other than Tuesday and Thursday I believe.

Here's the Beeb link to the expected announcements:

Defence review: 'Strike brigades' to be created by 2025 - BBC News

SNP kicking off at the possibility of a cut in numbers for Type 26, despite the fact that their recent bid for independence would have seen the numbers of frigates built in Scotland to zero :)
Thanks, that'll be 0330 Tuesday morning for me, so I'll be catching up on my beauty sleep. The ugly pills work to well.

And remember the new America Class LHA can carry up to 20 F35 in a surge capacity if needed
Ah, The America. More an aircraft carrier than a phib. Which bring up the fact that operating F-35B require some serious modification to the current LHA design, even to the point of building a new type of LHA. Maybe USS America will be the shape of a new USN carrier force. Maybe in the future, if USS America-F-35B combo work well, USN will abandon or reduce it's CATOBAR carrier and replace it with America class.

Ah no, minor mods will be needed for current gators to work with F35B. America class is an Aviation enhanced version USS Makin Island of the Wasp class origins, reason being it was to accomadate more aircraft below deck for maintenance, follow on orders after LHA-7 USS Tripoli will have a smaller well dock than current Wasp Class gators

B will work fine on an America. I suspect V22 brings similar challenges in terms of managing aircraft spotting etc,

I'd stop subscribing to David Axe's mailout list if I were you, I don't think you're getting a solid picture of the aircraft.

There's always that Tyler guy who's claim to fame is he's got no industry connections, no practical experience so therefore he's unbiased.

See, back where I come from, the word would be clueless..
