Update.

Maneuver element south is gone. Gone completely. Some survivors managed to break out, but the giant piles of destroyed and captured equipment tell a story quite unflattering for the Kiev government. Take a look.

However, the Kiev offensive seems to have knocked the rebels off of several hills surrounding Saur-Mogila. It's unclear whether the rebels still hold Saur-Mogila itself.

Government troops have also taken Krasniy Luch, Vakhrushevo, Khrustal'noe, and Bokovo-Platovo. The DNR is now surrounded and separated from the LNR. If they still hold Saur-Mogila then they may still have border access, but it's likelier that even if they have the hill, they don't have a corridor to the border. Strelkov blames the Cossacks, but I suspect the reality is that even had they fought, they would have (at best) bought some time.

The new prime-minister of the DNR is a rebel fighter and leader, not a civilian with ties to Moscow. The rebels seem to be preparing for the eventual defeat of the conventional fight.

 

Officers from the Ukrainian 72nd Mech Bde have been arrested by Russia for warcrimes, namely use of white phosphorus munitions.

Personal comment: the Russian government must have lost it's mind.

 

Lukashenko has removed all trade restrictions with Ukraine. It appears that their trade-war is over.

 

Meanwhile the city of Nikolaev will have no hot water, due to gas shortages.

Russia denied allegations Saturday that it tried to send “humanitarian” troops into conflict-torn eastern Ukraine, as rebels in the surrounded stronghold of Donetsk pledged to keep fighting.

Kiev said earlier that it had managed to halt a Russian convoy through diplomatic channels, after the United States warned that any unilateral intervention by Moscow would be “deeply alarming” and considered an invasion.

They're slowly pushing into the Donetsk suburbs.

A Russian incursion? I haven't heard anything. I'll let you know if I see something. A couple of months ago the Ukrainian government claimed that they hit a Russian troop column consisting of over 100 armored vehicles, with T-90 tanks, and thus prevented a Russian invasion... so honestly until I see something substantial I tend to disregard things of this sort.

Ukrainian officials have said they are ready to agree a ceasefire but on condition the rebels surrender their arms.


So essentially, they have to surrender.

Control is a big word. The rebels are no longer on it, but whether the government troops actually hold it remains to be seen. Government troops had moved onto hills in that area many times, to be pushed off them by massive arty strikes. Ultimately though, it does appear to be a matter of time.

That entire area with the exception of the monument area itself has changed hands several times but the last report I saw said there are less than 200 separatists in the area now. It may change again but like you said, it's apparently just a matter of time.

To be honest, there's little reason to hold the territory, now that maneuver element south is gone. And the Ukrainian government has concentrated very large quantity of heavy firepower in that area. So I wouldn't be surprised if the rebels are withdrawing. I strongly suspect they took heavy casualties there, holding Saur-Mogila at any cost against government attacks.

Update.

Ukrainian forces are fighting the rebels in Krasniy Yar, which is north west of Krasnodon, and dead south of Lugansk. Lugansk may or may not be surrounded, but either way the rebels don't control the area around it.

The village of Stepanovka is being reported as virtually annihilated by the fighting.

Russia says they will send a humanitarian convoy to Ukraine, in cooperation with the Red Cross. But the Red Cross denies knowledge of this.

Putin says he's accepting Poroshenko's conditions for the humanitarian convoy. A reminder those conditions are that the convoy is sent with international involvement (Red Cross), Ukraine will decide where to send it, and no military escort will be permitted.

Interestingly enough the Ukrainian National Security Council says that the humanitarian convoy is being sent by agreement with Ukraine.

Two Ukrainian troop detachments have been surrounded near Antratsit. It's likely they were part of the maneuver element that was trying to surround Lugansk. If this is correct, and if the rebels manage to defeat them, it could mean that Lugansk remains un-surrounded.

Shahtersk was quite important, and the rebel victory there is very significant. If they can replicate that success at Krasniy Luch, this war will continue quite a bit longer.

Update.

Pro-rebel sources claim that they have surrounded Ukrainian troops that tried to surround Ilovaysk. This is similar to what happened with Lugansk, where Ukrainian troops trying to surround the city, ended up cut off and surrounded themselves.
