200 Billion in ships over the next 30 years?
Is that right.. what ships are we getting over the next 30 years to pay 200 billion ?

12 Subs $40 billion
3 AWD $6 billion
8 Future Frigate $10 billion
2 replenishment ships $2 billion
20 Corvettes $20 billion
This is an election folks, maybe some allowance there for high speed rail, moving FBE, Albatross and Eden etc. Plenty of jobs to be had in that lot:rolleyes:

Mate, you forgot a couple of things.

Don't forget the 14 replacement ACPB's and the 6 new LCH too, sorry? What was that you said? Still doesn't add up?

Ok, ok, it also includes the cost of a mega new naval base and a new fleet air arm base on the Brisbane River right next to KRudd's electorate! Sorry? Still doesn't add up?

Ok, ok, I know, it also includes the three complete USN Carrier Battle groups that we are buying from the US for the RAN that Kevin will announce at the ALP's official campaign launch tomorrow!

Surely the newspaper couldn't have got it's sums wrong, could it???

Just trying to show that 200 billion would be close to 150++ships built for navy over the next 30 years! Bloody election year dribble from the papers !
I don't know, perhaps there is something in it............ they (DEFMIN and Co) spent $130million on an OSV which they don't really use but keep manned with a civilian crew. The annual operating cost would not be cheap. Keep that sort of approach up and lots of Money (or should I say lots more) will get flushed.

Over thirty years we would also be talking the replacements for the AWDs, LHDs, and the replacements for the replacements of the Armidales based on a 25 to 30 year life span and only 14-15 years for PBs. Also the new subs, depending if they go for a continuous build or not (one every 18 months to 2 years) will probably start being replaced within this time frame as well.

well that does sound interesting.

Can I ask? Will we hear about them soon, regardless of a change of Government?
You can ask, but I aint saying anything in an open forum :)

change of govt might have an impact but I doubt it - one is highly likely will get up either way

You'd make a good movie writer GF keeping us in suspense like that.

But I'll bite we need a second Bay class and two more AWD can't see the AWD getting up we could in theory build a Bay class

Whatever the class the names are pretty certain;

HMAS Christmas Island and HMAS Manus Island
Yes very clever, I like that, the 'Island' Class.

Now all we need is for the Government to announce the purchase of an aircraft carrier and name it after that other 'big' island and call it HMAS Australia!

They could announce it during the International Fleet Review perhaps.

Oh well..... it's Father's Day, I'm allowed to dream aren't I?

If we ever get an aircraft carrier it would be more in size to be a HMAS Tasmania.
Abe, yes you are right, how silly of me, I was thinking too big, but a small CV named HMAS Tasmania would certainly do for a start (Probably make our fellow contributor Tasman a happy man if they named another ship after his home State!)

It's been a long time since the first HMAS Tasmania was decommissioned, we are certainly long over due for another one.

Raven, two heads you say? Mmmm, yes well..... actually my Great Grandmother was born in Tasmania in the 1850's (from Irish convict parents, shotgun wedding too!) and no, they weren't brother and sister or even first cousins!!

Well if FBE gets moved to Brisbane they can name the new flagship after that great Brisbane estuary landmark: HMAS Mud Island.
