Russian Air Force News & Discussion

Fun fact, Antonov stated that the second An-225 is being finished, a customer has been found. CAST thinks the Russian MoD is behind the order, and even ventures to speculate that they might order low-rate serial production for the VVS. Given its high degree of unification with the An-124 (production of which is being restarted) this wouldn't be impossible.

The Mriya-2 can be expected to take off in 2-3 years.

I'm surprised!
With new engines i bet. Couldn't it be some Ukraine cargo company?
What's really weird, NATO could be the largest user, leasing..

What Ukrainian cargo company has the money? Not to mention production of the An-124 is being restarted in Russia. It's called a joint product, but the truth is that Russia is the driving force behind it. I doubt that the second An-124 could be finished without major Russian involvement. Given that Russia plans on being the largest operator of the An-124, it might make some sense for either Volga-Dnepr, or the Russian MoD, to get an An-225. For Ukraine, however, it's expensive, and risky.

A total of 20 Mi-35M attack helicopters will be deployed to Rostov AB until year end.
The first helicopters of this type have recently been delivered.

In the new AIR International, there is another news article that says the Spetsnaz training centre near Moscow intends to buy 10 to 15 specops Mi-8, as the currently used Mi-8MTKO lack the necessary sensors to train all kinds of missions for which the Spetsnaz could be required.

There were several different types of GBAD for the PVO SV.

AAA: S-60 replaced by ZSU-23-4 replaced by Tunguska
Tac SAM: Strela-10
Regimental SAM: OSA replaced by Tor
Division SAM: Kub replaced by Buk
Theater SAM: S-300V

I heard the idea was that more different types would make them harder to jam.
Thanks!
I have two questions about the Buk.
1. According to Wiki, Venezuela has received the Buk-M2EK, is that true? (There is no link/source)
2. Also wiki told that the Buk M3 is under development and that the Buk-M3, a modernized version of the Buk-M1 system, will be deployed in 2009. Is this program cancelled or is it still running?

I've read that Venezuela received Tor-M1, S-300VM, and some MANPADS. There were rumors about other SAMs but I have no specific info on the Buk. Also, what exactly is a Buk-M2EK? The standard export variant is the Buk-M2E. What's the K variant then?

I have also heard mentions of it. I don't know if it's still running, but it's likely. Then again a new mid-range SAM is also under development, called Vityaz. So the Buk-M3 might've been cancelled. Buk-M2 procurement is proceeding however, and exports for it are too. So it's likely they continue developing incremental modernization variants even if a new SAM is planned soon.

.
According to wiki: "Buk-M2EK - A wheeled variant of Buk-M2 on MZKT-6922 chassis is currently under active development."

Ah, yes I knew transplanted the Buk on the MZKT chassis, used for the Tor-M2s, I just didn't know that variant had a different designation. Thanks for letting me know.

Sandy's Victims to Get Help from Russia | Russia | RIA Novosti

2 Russian Il76 aircraft are inbound from Moscow to New York with cargo and aid in support of Hurricane Sandy victims though the article wasnt clear whether the aircraft were VVS or civilian/govt.

on an unrelated note it seems like a positive step forward in Russian-American relations. I wonder what the diplomatic/political implications were: a good-will gesture with no strings attached? signs of greater cooperation with the candidate that didn't think of Russia as "number one greatest geopolitical foe"? chagrin over having a boomer spotted patrolling off the east coast? Wish these kinds of things were discussed more

ruaviation.com reports that the Russian MoD intends to buy up to 15 Let 410 light transport aircraft. 4 have already been delivered in 2011, 3 are to be handed over this november and 4 more will be delivered in 2013. Options on another 4 have also been included in the last order.

As far as I know, the VVS has been operating earlier versions of this aircraft for quite a long time. I wonder how many of them are still in service.

They also just got another 3 handed over. For a total of 9 new Yak-130s.

Lenta.ru:

Also the first Pantsyr-S1 unit was delivered to East MD. They are most likely going to be deployed to Nakhodka, where the East MD's only S-400 regiment is located. It's a single battery of 6 units.

Apparently two more batteries are planned for handover before year's end.

Forgive my OT here.
But wouldn't it make sense to place those Pantsir-S1 batt in close with the S-400 Batt. That way they can support each other. And the S1 batt can drawn better SA from S-400 powerfull radars(newtorking)?

Pantsir's are indeed deployed alongside S-400s.

ruaviation also reports that today the first two Su-30SM have been handed over.
Unfortunately there were no photos of the aircraft.

I like it. It reminds me of those Hellducks :)

Irkut state, that Su-30SM comes with a lot of improvments:

"radar system, radio and recognition system, ejection seats and a number of support systems. The weaponry configuration was changed as well."

What have they done with the radar?
thats the most interesting news.
