Then I guess the F70 A/A should receive a mid-life update. What do you think would be the most cost effective way to improve them?

And what about the La Fayette? They are now "1st rank" frigates, but still armed like corvettes.

I im not sure either move them to ASW vessels which i still see as alright idea and just fit point defense missiles (Mistral) or like other SM-1 users upgrade it to fire SM-2 so it has some utility. Or see if their are any buyers for a quite young ship

IIRC the F70 AA were scheduled to get an update, but it was cancelled for financial reasons.
Would that be for SM-2 because im sure its somewhere on the thread the updates I forgot completely about it.
Did the MN equivalents have the updates the Durand du Penn

Yes I think none of the mid-life updates are happening.
Horizons won't even have point defence for the same reason.

This is more a hypothetical question :)

Marine Nationale Discussions

The patrol role is something that really needs replacement in some way, maybe a class of OPVs similar to the Floreal or even some cheaper corvettes with limited ASW/AAW capabilities - money talks there realistically.

MN is likely to but some GoWind for that purpose

Anyone know (and have a link that shows) how many Scalp Naval France are going to get, from memory it was only 100 is this correct.

Also are Horizon scheduled to receive A70 cells and Scalp?

Sarkozy will order the PA2. He could've already cancelled the project. There wouldn't been much uproar about a cancellation decision.

The DCNS coporate financed opv Adroit Gowind will be avail to the MN from 2012 to 2015. I think the replacements for the avisos will be an OPV based on this design.

Here is DCNS' animation video of a completed Freem.

What will replace the La Fayette and Floréal classes? Five Fremm will be assigned to the FOST,and the other four will be based at Toulon.
I'm hoping at least 6 or 7 FM 400 will replacement the La Fayette and Floréa classes.

Here's a pic of DCNS' new replenishment oiler design.

The CDG just returned from a deployment, and it was receiving maintenace before it was ordered to Libya. Most of the French carrier aircraft are receiving maintenace, and pilots are been cycled into and out of squadrons. The 8 rafale and 6 Super Etendard are the only available combat aircraft at this time. There are only 28 rafale M in service.

The PA2 may be ordered in 2012, but there's a very good chance that the construction of the PA2, want start until 2022 at the earliest.

This is a list of vessels that must be ordered from 2011 to 2022 to replace existing vessels.

2 AAW frigates
9 ASW frigates
6 SSN
4 AOR
2 LHD
18 OPV of the BATISMAR program ( to replace the P400, BATRAL, and A69s )
7-9 new minesweepers
And many more smaller programs that will add up.

The MN is taking its time on deciding the BATIMAR program. The MN general staff wants light frigates for replacements for the P400, BATRAL, and A69s. But do to budget constraints they want get there light frigates. Well anyway OPVs can be built much faster than frigates.

The MN must replace 2 to 3 SSBNs, the La Fayettes and Floreal during the 2025 to 2035 timeframe. They're the only vessels that will need replacing during that timeframe.

The PA2 would enter service in the late 2020s, and a sistership could be ordered somtime after 2035.

Why 2 LHD? One is already building to replace Foudre. Siroco can easily run on into the 2020s.

And 11 frigates? I thought the aim was to have 18 frigates including the Horizons & Lafayettes, which means 11 new ships in total - but one of those 11 is on sea trials, & more are already building, so don't need to be ordered.

Yes, one LHD will enter service next year. And all the frigates have been ordered, and one is on sea trails. I miss spoke, but they are tying up the procurement budget. Also the first three Triomphant class submarines will getting a new combat system (SYCOBS) and new modernized sonar suites along there upgrades to carry M51. The MN was right to cancel the third and foruth horizons due to budget constraints.

I'd be surprised if they were much less.
They will be close to the price of Horizons. When the Marine Nationale, canceled the LA FREMM the cost of the series skyrocketed. The FREDA priced has increased because of that mistake by the MN. They should've ordered the LA FREMM, and upgraded them with ASW systems in the future. None the price has jumped 7.8b euros for 11 ships; instead, of 6.5b euros for 17 ships. The MN has to replace the FOST, FREMM stationed at Brest with ASW OPV. Five FREMm will be stationed at Brest. What leaves four FREMM for the carrier and amph groups.
