Brazil has announced the procurement of Scorpene subs from France, while these subs will be built by DCNS and Odebrecht in brazil four would be conventionaly powered diesel electric subs the fifth would be a nuclear powered submarine. As for the nuclear-powered attack submarine, DCNS will provide design assistance to the Brazilian Navy's design agency for all non-nuclear elements of the Navy's first nuclear submarine. Also, the entire nuclear power plant will be designed and built in Brazil.

India has an agreement with DCNS for building 6 diesel electric scorpene subs and construction for the same has already begun in Mazagon Docks in India. India has a huge need for nuclear subs. While its existing program for domesticaly building nuclear subs (the ATV program) has been taking decades, its proposals to acquire subs on lease from Russia has also entered rough waters. In this context I invite this forum on voting on whether India should also opt for a similar nuclear powered submarine or not

The voting options are (a) Yes - two subs (b) Yes - one sub (c) India should not go for scorpene nuc subs

As i have said on other thread. I dont think India wil have the french or anyone else make nuke subs for them . India has built the ATV. from now on i belive they only require majot/minor tech inputs and plus R&D.
why would india go for nuclear version of scorpene?
and by the way the ATV is under testing phase and will be inducted by late 2009 or 2010.(atleast the 1st one)

Wht do you mean testing phase for the first ATV (which some reports stated could end up being a technology demonstrator) i sincerely doubt the sea trials have started. Hey its a buyers market out there isnt it esp with the current global economic scenario and India has deep pockets, besides the ATV is been in development for a couple of decades am guessing its probably based on some russian legacy platform, buying new subs or co-developing or license production would give india newer class/gen of subs

oh sorry.
the sea trials will be held in mid 2009 (aug).
but none the less it will be cheaper to build nuclear subs and keep updating the technology inhouse.
keep in mind that India is absorbing reactor technology from France , Russia and even developing its own tech for civilian reactors.

Cheaper and longer; they key here is tht to understand the need and the time frame for it - IN needs 10-12 nuc-subs by 10 yrs. The ATV would be a max 5-6 subs and the Akula lease (if it ever works out) will be for a max of 2 subs - which means that there is a need to find alternate solutions for 2-3 more subs. If one talks about the ATV project delivering more subs within tht time frame then i doubt it beacuse to build the projected 5-6 boats itself will take 10 yrs atleast and i doubt there could be a parallel program for the same as all the expertise is diverted to this project
