New Delhi: The Government has shot down the defence establishment’s demand to give the army a new version of the Bofors gun which outperformed all its rivals during trials.
The army—which is for desperate for a new gun as part of its modernisation and upgradation plan—till March 2007 was on the verge of buying the new Bofors gun that would have enabled it to strike targets deep inside enemy areas. But after the completion of an unprecedented four round of trials in four years, the gun was rejected.
Many experts credit Bofors guns for India winning the war in Kargil. The new Bofors gun, which is more advanced and is inspired by the Kargil war, was tested in all kinds of conditions: in the deserts of Rajasthan to the heights of Kashmir.
The new gun outperformed its rivals but sources say the UPA government feared the name Bofors would create a controversy because of the kickbacks scandal of 1980s.
BAE Systems SWS Defence, which manufactures the Bofors gun, says the Government’s decision is surprising. “I am very surprised and disappointed because we got indications that we had fulfilled all the requirements. We are not agreeing with what the army is saying—this is a very sophisticated gun,” said Hakan Kangert, Chairperson of BAE Systems SWS Defence.
Even former Army chiefs are now questioning the UPA government’s decision. “The name of Bofors carries a political baggage, particularly with the Government in power,” said former army chief General (retired) Shankar Roy Chowdhury.
CNN-IBN has learnt that the Bofors gun had matched and surpassed most of confidential quality requirement parameters that the army had set for buying the new gun:
The army demanded a maximum firing range of 35 km: the new Bofors gun has a range of 40 km. The army wanted a firing rate of 75 rounds in an hour: the Bofors firing rate 75 rounds in 23 minutes.
Yet, the army cancelled the deal. Sources in the Defence Ministry told CNN-IBN that now a new tender would be floated and this would have less stringent specifications than the earlier one.
