Infantry Tactics in the west

I think a detailed docterine of sorts would be far better than a tactic is.

An army cannot solely depend on tactics.

There's some serious misinformation in this thread. Since Vietnam Australian troops have been taught two things when faced by an ambush in the bush/jungle. This is until you recieve orders from your platoon commander.

1. Do not run! If you turn your back you are an easy target.
2. Make the choice, hit the deck, take cover, whatever; just get down. OR run forward.

The running forward bit is the part that many posters called "Suicidal," but it's the opposite. It could save your life.
Most fire-fights occur within ten meters in the jungle. Running forward even a few meters is enough to gain a tactical advantage. It's the only thing you can do without withdrawing that will gain you a tactical advantage.
