The 2,900 ton class is not in service yet.
the Oyashios are already highly regarded - so one would think that the japanese can continue to pump out an iterative improvement

without going into verifiable detail, they are regarded as being the deepest diving conventionals in the world. At a design level, they are a legacy Barbel design - which is still regarded as the most acoustiucally sound and transparent base design ever made.

there are very few fleet sub designs using conventional power that could compete with them across a few parameters.

The U.S. is first

2. U.K. They have great experience in submarines with great crews and ships. They have had many classes of great SSN's and used one to sink a ship in the Falklands war. The new Asutes are great as well.

3. Russians. great new AIP subs + Akulas and Typhoon. Suffer from lack of funding.

4. French. They have had only one class of SSN so they aren't that experienced. But good SSBNs.

ASIA.

1. China. Song, Yuan diesel-electric + Han and Xia class. Also Kilo including the improved Kilo versions AND new type 093+094 SSN and SSBN

2. Japan. Long line of good subs. Yushio, Harushio, and now Oyashio. All built in big numbers. Large amounts of high quality and high capability subs. Good crew training as well b/c cooperation exercises with the U.S.N.

3. India Kilo+ type 209s. New Scorpenes with AIP

4. Australia. Collins class are among the best diesel electric around.
If your talking about crew training , maintance and all I agree.
But if your talking about power of submarine forces I would give Russia 2nd place just after US , and India before Japan .

If we are evaluating comparable fleets we have to look at total tonnage, crew competency, technology, firepower and experience.

With regard to Western nations US first, UK second. They are still the only two Western submarine fleets capable of conventional deep strike, as well as possessing excellent surveillance, sub and service kill capabilities coupled with a strong post WWII track record. Even when the French Barracudas come on line total French submarine tonnage will be less than the UK’s SSN fleet (Astute et al), plus Scalp does not offer the same capability as Tomahawk block IV.

Please explain more. I didn't know the things you just stated. Are they really one of if not THE deepest diving conventional subs in the world?
Thanks:)

Well, India is building an aircraft carrier called ATV.

It does build detroyers of world class - so they claim !!

In subs, they are building Scorpenes with French assistance.

And, they have a nuclear sub well on it's way to completion !!

Who can elaborate on that then ?
Hey, can't anyone answer this ?

india's aircraft carrier project was known as the ads (air defence ship),but the project has been renamed as iac(indigenous aircraft carrier),this project envisages the construction of 2 aircraft carriers of 36000-40000 ton capability for the indian navy with the second one to be launched in 2011.

india's nuclear submarine project is known as the atv class(advanced technology vessels) and is based on a russian design based on the charlie 2 class,it is believed to be a ssgn (sub surface general nuclear) class of vessel and is likely to be armed with the brahmos cruise missiles and /or the sagarika ballistic missile, a total of 5 vessels are to be constructed under this programme ,the 90mw nuclear reactor is believed to have been developed with russian assistance and currently hull fabrication work is being carried out by one of india's leading engineering firms the larsen and toubro, the first of this class is expected to be launched sometime next year, thales uk has expressed interest in supplying the non-hull penetrating optronics mast for these submarines, israel is also believed to be assisting india, though the nature of assistance is not clear.

Don't worry, the text doesn't go into much detail. But very interesting pictures in regards to the Type 93.

Are those real pictures, or computer generated. I already have visited the site before and regularly check for news, but I didn't check today. They pictures look real.

So if they are real, they are the first public pictures of the type 093
Thanks:)

Further details on the Oyashio can be found here:
http://www.military-today.com/navy/oyashio_class.htm
what will be interesting is the future design of this class. at the moment, acoustically it would be less acoustically efficient than some of the others around (esp those with the seawolf/virgina/212-4 hull type mods)

the other thing will be whether they elect to go to a St Georges Cross...

The one that looks real is real, the one that looks like a CG is CG. And the one with the diving plane on the sail is 091G. The part that kind of confuses me is whether this 091G is just modified from one of the 5 existing 091s or a new hull. Anyhow, for China to declassify 093, I think they probably have more than 2 in service by now.
