Update: Major Gilbert was laid to rest yesterday at Arlington National Cementary.
Anyone have any more info on what actually happened? I find it interesting that the initial reports of this crash said that enemy fire was not believed to be the cause but investigations were continuing. I remember this because I checked. That seems to be pretty much the standard party line when a US aircraft goes down. I wonder why they say that when this aircraft was apparently actively strafing at low-level in support of ground troops.

Makes me wonder how many of these other reports where they say that, the aircraft might in fact have been shot down.

Well, all we have is speculation, no hard data and facts.
Therefore, refering that initial comment to the investigation as party line is a bit uncalled for.
As far as i know the only ones with real facts and access to the destroyed airframe are the investigation board, so they are the ones with experts and facts to reach a conclusion.
As for strafing, i´ve read somewhere that it ´s a dangerous part of combat flying, and not only due to enemy fire, but also because the aircraft is relatively slow, low altitude and a mistake can be fatal, as well as some mechanical failure, but Big E can tell us if that is correct.
Unless USAF accident investigation boards are likely to be politically influenced, and the results manipulated, (i Hope not) whatever conclusions they reach on each accident or shootdown, should be the accurate. And they are the only ones with access to proof, so everything else is speculation.
RIP to the pilot. Whatever else, he died for his country.

If the aircraft was brought down due to enemy hostile fire I do not see any reason for them to hide it.

"There is still no official word on what exactly brought the fighter down -- military officials wouldn't comment on whether the fighter was shot down. CNN's latest report indicates those officials are speculating Major Gilbert was unable to eject from the the aircraft and died in the crash." - Aero-News
