War Against ISIS

Question....how is USA building bases in Syria?

Better questions is how they currently have bases in Syria?

I thought Assad does not want USA there?
What Syria? That is an old name for a nation than no longer exists. It has not existed in effect for years.

What are Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Turkey supposed to do with Russia and Iran on their doorstep?

Think about it. The question of whether the US was invited is wholly irrelevant as Assad no longer has a nation to govern. He has a few cities and that's it.

Before anyone starts shouting 'unfair occupation' I would refer people to the Eastern Ukraine situation, Crimea, and the South China Sea.

It seems folks that we live in a world where might is right. The big three are carving up the world according to what they can get away with and the US is not waiting to be left out of that party.

Let the fun commence.

Except for the Kurdish independence movement, where else is that true?

What are Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Turkey supposed to do with Russia and Iran on their doorstep?
They could trying to respect Syrian territorial integrity, and not arming questionable (at best) groups in hopes of short term political gain.

Think about it. The question of whether the US was invited is wholly irrelevant as Assad no longer has a nation to govern. He has a few cities and that's it.
And most of the population, huddling in those cities, for safety, against the "democracy" that Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Israel, Qatar, and the US are trying to bring to Syria. Also... "a few cities"? look at the recent map of the conflict. ;)

Before anyone starts shouting 'unfair occupation' I would refer people to the Eastern Ukraine situation, Crimea, and the South China Sea.
You steal the words right out of my mouth. US presence in Syria is about as legal as Russian presence in Eastern Ukraine. Can't wait for those anti-US sanctions, over violations of Syrian territorial integrity, and sponsorship of Kurdish separatism. :D

It seems folks that we live in a world where might is right. The big three are carving up the world according to what they can get away with and the US is not waiting to be left out of that party.
I'm glad you can admit this.

Update.

SAA Forces are currently attempting to take the Sukhna oasis. The fall of this key point will leave the ISIS forces in Akerbat practically cut off, and will effectively secure the flanks of both the northern forces that pushed from Aleppo all the way to Resafa, as well as the southern forces at Palmyra.

What is Iran supposed to do with it being surrounded by countries armed to the teeth and aligned with the U.S? Is Russia supposed to be silent and do nothing while the U.S. and its allies do what they want in the region? If the U.S. can have a presence in various countries in the region - in countries led by leaders who were never elected - is it wrong or surprising that Russia also has a presence in a country which is an ally and is vital to Russian interests? If IS takes control of Syria and moves into other countries; they will be close to Russia''s ''doorstep''.
You make it sound as if it's only the U.S. and others countries which have concerns and national interests to watch out for while Russia and Iran don't.

[Secret Russian-Kurdish-Syrian Military Cooperation Is Happening In Syria’s Eastern Desert]
Secret Russian-Kurdish-Syrian military cooperation is happening in Syria’s eastern desert | The Independent

''Their presence showed clearly that despite belligerent Western - especially American - claims that Syrian forces are interfering with the “Allied” campaign against Isis, both sides are in reality going to enormous lengths to avoid confrontation. Russian Colonel Yevgeni, thin and close-shaven with a dark moustache, smiled politely but refused to talk to me''

The Russians, Syrians army and YPG have apparently established a coordination centre to prevent clashes between them. Makes me wonder what forms of cooperation/coordination the various sides have been having without the knowledge of their foreign backers?

[Woe Betide The Kurds Of Northern Syria When The War Is Over]
http://www.independent.co.uk/voices/syria-war-kurds-turkey-aleppo-when-the-war-is-over-a7868521.html

''You do not need a PhD in intelligence to understand what is happening. Ahrar al-Sham, largely supported by Qatar and Turkey, is at war with al-Nusrah whose support has come from Saudi Arabia (and Qatar in the past) and, so far as the Syrians are concerned, from the United States. For the Syrians, the Qatar-Saudi dispute is now being fought out on the ground between the two sides’ proxies in the Syrian war.''

''There is also much talk of weapons, especially the American TOW anti-armour rockets which Nusrah brought into Syria in large numbers. The Syrian army had paid a heavy cost in these battles, until they received new Russian weapons. The Syrian 11th Brigade at the Syrian-Turkish border had been repeatedly attacked. There are still Muslim Brotherhood units near Dera’a in the south. If Syria was fighting just one state, there would be a quick victory, “but it is fighting states from all around the world”, one man says. This statement might smack of propaganda - even self- pity - if it did not bear an element of truth. ''

For those interested Air Force Monthly's June issue has a detailed article on the Syrian Air Force. Written by Tom Cooper who has done several books on Middle Eastern, African and Iranian air arms.

The Syrian army were standing up to Isis long before the Americans ever fired a missile | The Independent

An interesting article on the Syrian army and one of its generals who was killed fighting IS. To be expected given that the Syrian army has been fighting since 2011, it's a very different organisation compared to the one in 6 years ago when the conflict started. Like most Third World armies, especially ones led by dictatorial governments, the Syrian no doubt has its share of inept, badly led units but also its share of capable and well led units. Whilst many observers assume that it has been Iranian and Hezbollah volunteers who have largely been responsible for rolling back Assad's enemies; reports have indicated that this is not always so. In fact at times the Iranians [some of whom have less combat experience than the Syrians] are viewed by their Syrian allies as amateurs and there have also been reports of tensions between both allies.

'' I don’t like armies. They are dangerous institutions. Soldiers are not heroes just because they fight. And I’ve grown tired of saying that those who live by the sword sometimes die by the sword. But in an age when the Americans and the Iraqis and Isis can account for 40,000 civilian deaths in Mosul in the past twelve months, compared to 50,000 civilians slaughtered by the Mongols in 13th-century Aleppo - a human rights improvement of US aircrews, Iraqi brutality and Isis sadism over the Mongol hordes by a mere 10,000 souls - death sometimes seems to have lost its meaning.''

''Unless you know the victims or their families. I have a friend whose mother was murdered in the Damascus suburb of Harasta near the start of the Syrian war, another whose brother-in-law was kidnapped east of the city and never seen again. I met a little girl whose mother and small brother were shot down by al-Nusrah killers in the town of Jisr al-Shughour, and a Lebanese who believes his nephew was hanged in a Syrian jail. And then, this month, in the eastern Syrian desert, near the dust-swept shack village of al-Arak, a Syrian soldier I’d come to know was killed by Isis.''

As Syria's army – with Russia's help – advances through the desert, Isis propaganda comes across the radio waves | The Independent

''We’ve been through this before, of course: Syrian army advances that turned sour in northern Syria, the long siege of eastern Aleppo, Isis retreats that transformed themselves into new and savage suicide attacks out of the desert and into Palmyra. But the Russian army foot patrols in the wrecked modern city of Palmyra – I even saw Russian Army Chechen troops in the city, a vital Muslim component to Moscow’s military alliance with Damascus – suggest that this time the Syrian army has its enemies on the run.''

''Two officers tell me a creepy story, which might - given the nature of the Isis mind – have some pathetic truth. Several suicide bombers, they say, were found with women’s underclothes in their pockets, for the virgins they would meet in paradise''

The status of Syrian Military

After observing the Syrian MILITARY it barely survive against insurgents thanks to the Russian they are on the offensive. I have notice the Syrian military has problems with uniforms. As person who looking at the Civil War sometimes it hard to know who is the Syrian military or insurgents. For example here is a look at a airborne assault https://mobile.almasdarnews.com/article/syrian-airborne-forces-conduct-rare-mission-behind-enemy-lines-video/ It going to take real help to get Syrian Military back to it original state. The Russian has alot work to get the Syrian military up to speed. The Syrian has good combat experiences but has not been fighting against a standing or professional army like Turkey, U.S., IDF, and etc. The Syrian Military has been fighting mostly untrained forces. They do have FSA fighting also which made up of ex Syrian soldiers. After study the Syrian forces they have made good advancements in counterinsurgency. You have ask yourself what real status of the Syrian Military?. The Syrian Military is doing this with small numbers of ground forces. The main thing helping Syrian forces is air power and technical help from Russia. The Russian Areospace Forces has improved since the Georgian conflict. This gave the Russian chance to train and use it equipment in war environment. They showcase there EW and its new aircrafts which show promises results. The Civil War has shown the best and worst of the Syrian forces. Overall it shows the problems the Syrian forces have to face after the Civil war.

As I've pointed out before; you are mistaken. It's not a case of a Syrian military which is mostly not combat effective being propped up by the Russians. Like most armies, the Syrians have bad units and also good units; over the years they have steadily improved and the Syrian army of 2017 is not the army it was in 2011. Getting it back to its ''original state'' would mean going backwards not forwards as the Syrian army in its ''original state'' was a lot less combat effective and experienced compared to the present.

If indeed most of the Syrian army was not combat effective; Assad would have fallen long ago as there are only so many Russians, Iranians and Hezbollah on the ground. Just like the like of salutes [which you brought up in the past], the lack of a common uniform doesn't in any way indicate an inept army. BTW, way back from the 1960's the Syrians [like the Iraqis who had woodland, DPM, etc] had various different uniforms issued to different units; it's nothing new. The fact that the Syrian army has not been fighting ''against a standing or professional army like Turkey, U.S., IDF, and etc'' - not since 1982 at least - is immaterial because they are currently fighting non state actors.

John Fedup

The Bunker Group
Like it or not Assad is the only game in town. All the other alternatives are either sure to fail or will be even worse and as Sturm states Assad's army has been fighting non-state opponents albeit opponents with external support as does he but at least Assad's forces are making serious progress against ISIL. Once there's some kind of agreement, Assad is the only player with the strength (with Russian and Iranian backing) to settle this mess and settle things down. No Arab or Western governments are willing to put more blood and treasure into this quagmire.

Just get you
to understand without the technical skill in your army what do you have? Example your tanks if you dont have your armoured school or motor pool running you can't repair tanks. Back in early 2016 the Russian provided technical skill in reopening the armoured repair shop. Let's remember when did Syrian receive upgrade to its military? NONE !!!!!!! The SAA just received modern equipment last year and this year. Let's not the mention the Air force they receive no up to date fighters what new aircraft except for training aircrafts. I'm looking at overall modernization of the SAA. If you at look at photo of the war where do see big number of formation by SAA. If you start a big offensive you have large number i dont see this with SAA formation after 2014. SAA became smaller this includes the platoon sizes it has decrease due to limited resources such as manpower. It's not about good or bad units it about overall modernization of the SAA. Someone on this post stated the SAA is nothing but different miltia. Looking at this from military point of view they not good without Russian help or Iranian but mostly Russian help in the technical field. When taking about the status of the SAA this what im talking about.

They have adapted to the realities of the war they are fighting, the equipment they have, the combat effectiveness of the troops etc. I don't understand why you are up in arms demanding they turn into a powerful army conducting huge coordinated offensives out of the blue with high morale, massed tanks, good logistics ...

Yes the offensives are almost always small scale, a few platoons, sometimes a few dozen Hezbollah paramilitaries for example. Maybe they have a tank along for the ride and a couple of airstrikes are performed before the attack starts ... that's usually as far as it goes.

Supreme,

What is the point you're trying to make?

You keep going in about the limitations of the Syrian army, they're not capable of taking on a well trained army, they're not comparable to other armies, etc. So? Next thing you'll say is that the Syrians don't have an an institution on par with Sandhurst and West Point. True or not what relevance does it have? The plain fact remains that the Syrians as a whole have improved and that some units have been quite effective in taking on IS wthout direct Russian or Iranian help. In fact, as some journalists who are actually there have reported; in many instances the Syrians are actually more capable and experienced than their Iranian allies.

The picture you presenting; that of a totally inept army that still can't hold its own against IS and other rebel groups is false. It's simply not true. Not too long ago you even suggested that discipline is bad simply because troops in the field were not saluting their offices. Similarly, does the fact that they have various uniforms - the case for the past few decades - really indicate an inept army?

Update. It's been a while so a lot has happened. The SAA has taken the Suknha Oasis and then has used their positional advantage to split ISIS forces in central Syria into two pockets, isolating them from ISIS forces along the Euphrates. There is also information that the SAA has begun the push towards Deyr-ez-Zor and unconfirmed info that US-backed forces will take ISIS on the north-eastern side of the Euphrates while the Syrians will take the south-west. This, of course, guarantees a fairly solid corridor from Iraq to Syria.

Also, in a fairly dramatic incident, the Syrians carried out a vertical envelopment, with elite troops being dropped off by helo. The operation appears to have been planned and commanded by Russian advisers.

Inside the western pocket around Akerbat the Syrians have begun a push to collapse or possibly even split the pocket, from the south-east.

Interesting times.
Syrian Army with support of Russian VKS were making huge strides recently advancing on average 30 km a day. Encircling and destroying the most capable IS forces. Ripping apart all what IS could throw on them.
The latest trophy yesterday was Akkerbat, and now they on verge of de-blockading DeirEzzor.
Now, as I type, Syrian forces taking Kharratah and AsSholah, literally less than 10 km from the city. Last night the population in the town started celebrate the victory. Probably few days too early yet, it is easy to understand their joy.

And… not a word from “main stream” western media. The war in Syria is almost at its end, won spectacularly by Syrian people with support of Russian and other allies.
And.. Nobody in the west take a notice. Probably they cannot come up with lines to dress it up for the average Joe.

 Yea, Interesting times indeed.

Not entirely early. It appears some recon/SOF elements from the pro-Assad forces entered base 137, sparking the celebration. The main forces are still several KMs away, it appears the Syrians have learned the lesson of not advancing without properly protecting their flanks (the hard way).

Yes, "Tiger" force enters the base of 137 brigade!
Victory is in sights! The two and a half years IS's siege of DeirEzzor was lifted! Congratulation to all involved.
Have to lift a glass for Syrian army tonight :)
