The USN Hospital ships were pressed into service in America, one for each coast.
30 Mar 2020 – People cheered the US Navy hospital ship Comfort as it sailed into New York on Monday, as a beacon of the national effort to stanch the coronavirus outbreak at its US epicentre as the number of cases soared.

USNS Comfort will treat non-coronavirus patients, including those who require surgery and critical care, the Navy said.

"It's a wartime atmosphere and we all have to pull together," said New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, who was among the dignitaries to greet the ship's arrival. He said preparations for the ship, including dredging, took eight days, much less than the two weeks initially expected.

More COVID-19 problems for the USN’s CVNs in the Pacific.

Apparently getting worse on the Roosevelt as over 1000 sailers (1/5) of the crew have been taken off board for testing and quarantine.

One has to wonder what shape the rest of the surface fleet is in and how the subsurface fleet is sailiing

COVID-19: Roosevelt Skipper Says ‘Sailors Do Not Need To Die;’ Disembark & Quarantine Crew

updates form the CDR here. He wants the max number of crew off and safe until quarantine proves safe for his entire command

CPT Crozier commented “
We are not at war. Sailors do not need to die. If we do not act now, we are failing to properly take care of our most trusted asset — our Sailors," Navy Capt. Brett E. Crozier wrote in the letter.

If a war breaks out, the Roosevelt will respond and fight both the enemy and COVID-19, Crozier wrote. But since the United States is not at war right now, the Navy "cannot allow a single sailor to perish as a result of this pandemic unnecessarily.”

“Removing the majority of personnel from a deployed U.S. nuclear aircraft carrier and isolating them for two weeks may seem like an extraordinary measure. This is a necessary risk."

Tough spot to be in on a closed in warship during a pandemic. One has to be curious about the total lack of data emanating from the PLAN and Russian FLeet given their Regimes lack of transparecy.

Your a captain of a CVN and a serious disease outbreak occurs and you try to do what’s right for your crew. Unfortunately the MOTOS has the head of naval operations relieve you of command.

Well I guess we will never really know what transpired before the last communiqué that ended up with the media. I suspect he may have done the right thing but felt nothing was being done fast enough for his liking hence the unrestricted communiqué which someone else forward to the media. He most likely would have known the consequences of that action if this is truely the case.

Acting SecNav Modly made his stupid and naive comments to the Teddy’s crew shortly after Crozier’s departure. The crew had just given their captain a cheering farewell. He has since reversed himself and Trump says he may have to get involved...translation...Modly, there is a bus enroute for you, lie down on the pavement.

Modly has offered his resignation, and reports are that the recently confirmed Under Secretary of the Army James McPherson has been named as the NEW Acting Secretary of the Navy.
Long ago I lost count of all the designated nominees, nominees, confirmed & acting SecNav in the last 40 months

As a rule of thumb it takes a minimum of twelve months for a new appointee in any role, no matter their qualification, experience or competence, to become fully effective. Extrapolate that to the revolving door some organisations and businesses have and it explains an awful lot.

Well they did crap on the TDR CO from extremely on high. Huge over reaction and all the guy was doing was what any good CO should be doing: looking out for and doing his best to help his crew especially when a virus is ravaging his crew. The USN should give him back his ship. He's an honourable man.

He flew across the Pacific to make an invective & profanity-laden speech over the ship's PA system, without meeting or seeing the crew, then flew home. He made US navy sailors despise him. WTF did he think he was doing?

Thinking is not a requirement for a Trump appointee. The ability to be confirmed probably isn’t important either as they won’t be around for very long.

There is a SecNav nominee waiting for a confirmation hearing. No idea what the Senate is waiting on. Maybe this fiasco will get them moving finally

Totally agree with you on this Ng , in my opinion the captain of any ships first responsibility is to his crew and that also applies to the commander of any military unit. There are unfortunately those that are less than honorable who try to cover there backsides by shifting the blame downwards to cover for their lack of action or mistakes. I agree that re-en statement would be the correct and honorable thing to do, but I am not holding my breath on this given the history in this regard by some in high places in the USN.

US Navy has selected Lockheed Martin/Fincantieri/Marinette Marine team 'FREMM' variant for the FFG(X) program
$795.1 million contract for design & construction of first ship, with option for nine more.
Contract expected to be rebid after first 10 ships.

And, another article on the selection:
Navy picks Italian shipbuilder to build its new FFG-X guided-missile frigate

And, Department of Defense contract announcement (you're gonna need to scroll down to 'Navy' part to find it)
" Marinette Marine Corp., Marinette, Wisconsin, is awarded a $795,116,483 fixed-price incentive (firm target) contract for detail design and construction (DD&C) of the FFG(X) class of guided-missile frigates, with additional firm-fixed-price and cost reimbursement line items. The contract with options will provide for the delivery of up to 10 FFG(X) ships, post-delivery availability support, engineering and class services, crew familiarization, training equipment and provisioned item orders. ...
... The base contract includes the DD&C of the first FFG(X) ship and separately priced options for nine additional ships. ..."

Thought I would add a video for last year's Sea Air Space 2019 (just about a year ago). should remind all a good idea of at least the exterior differences from the traditional 'FREMM' design

If you went back to 2005 and suggested that the USN may end up operating more FREMMs than France and Italy combined you would have been thrown straight in the loony bin, how things change.

I am a little perplexed as to why you would take a specialist ASW vessel and only fitted with a variable depth active/passive towed array. Compared with the UMS 4110 and CAPTAS 4 VDS this seems like a step back. Mind you, I have no visibility of which towed system is to be fitted.

Just add from Xavier's Site. According to Naval News they will still have 32 Mk41 VLS (despite some speculation it will be only 16), and also with Aegis based sensors and enough range to do independent job. That's in my opinion mean it will still a capable Frigates that can do relative more expectations than OHP during it's time.

I actually quite like it, especially the power generation capability of a DDG 51 FLT III, and the ability to increase that by 25% without major structural changes. There appears to be plenty of room for future upgrades and it having the DDG 51 FLT II comms capability is great. 32 VLS cells is nothing to be sneezed at and having both the VDS and towed array will make it one mean sub hunter. If the VDS doesn't sniff your arse, the tail will. Having 16 NSM gives it a good ASuW punch as well.

It ain't a done deal yet, because the other contenders may decide to fire up their lawyers, and then their are those Congress critters looking for pork barrelling and kickbacks, ahem I mean campaign donations.

RIMPAC 2020 to go ahead but with a number of restrictions, including no social events ashore, Joint Base Pearl Harbour-Hickam will be accessible for Logistic support only and a minimal footprint for Staff ashore.
will be a long trip there and back with no time ashore for some of the Navies.
