- Headlines (in this case) do not oversell, they sell what is not there (eg, no dissent)@KipPotapych So would it be fair to say we land here: headlines oversell, substance holds more or less up, though we might disagree with the interpretation made. His statements were made in a public-facing forum within a private club, he likely got fired over them, and nobody in this thread I think is disputing his read is directionally reasonable, though I might weight it a bit heavier than you do. Is that a fair summary so far?

Lol. They would. Though they should really address their concerns to Apple and the interpretation the company made of what I was actually trying to say, haha.Et voilà!
A Québécois would send you to the guillotine...
Good job? Probably not, but I did not read everything that is out there. Of the very few I read, I think the Moscow Times did the best job, even the headline was semi-decent (in Russian):@KipPotapych I don't agree with all of it, but as you said, we've spent a lot of time on this, and I'm not keen to relitigate media analysis. I also don't think where we differ matters much for the bigger picture.
What I'd actually be curious about: is there reporting on this you think did a good job? Or do you reckon secondary sources are a lost cause here altogether?

While this belongs in the Middle East thread, posting it here and quoting myself because of the enormous vibes of the early 2022 and what I talked about in the quoted post:We had previously introduced (from memory), in no particular order, “crushing”, “sweeping”, “most ambitious”, “most severe”, “unprecedented”, “massive” and “historic”, “strongest possible” and then “even stronger” sanctions… surely I am missing a few (any recollections?). Of course, there was the “mother of all sanctions” before the war even began. I wonder if the “most far-reaching” will be the ones that break the camel’s back…
EU plans most far-reaching sanctions against Russia in coming months, Kallas says.
If not, what other words are there to reasonably describe the definitive fatalism of the next round? Is polymarket or kalshi taking bets on the next definitive descriptive - that is, hyperbole - term to describe the solidarity?
The problem with all this nonsense is that you have to increase the rhetoric in every round in order to be taken seriously. If you go from one hyperbole to the next, 20 (or is it now 21?) rounds from the EU alone later, you are going to look like… well, like Kallas appears to be with these proclamations - in other words, a clown. To be fair, the Americans killed the whole thing with “the mother of all” right from the start. Laughing. Talk about miscalculations and expectations of quick victory. Did they remember to pack the parade uniforms?
Sure, there is, perhaps, an expectation that an average person isn’t particularly involved and has a memory of a fish (maybe true)… It’s like Ukraine started (allegedly) inflicting 30K plus casualties on Russians per month back in 2024 (if not 23?), yet it became a new “zomg” a few months ago and we are now at 42,000 or whatever expected in the month of August, according to the UA figures/claims. Master clownery.
What’s weird is that people do not appear to be disappointed, but instead meet these proclamations with a “fuck yeah!” and “give it to the ruskies!”
Since this discussion took place just yesterday, I want to add the following; it is unrelated to defense and/or geopolitics, but it directly relates to the problem I described above and noted that the problem exists in general and undermines credibility of mass media. These “fishing expeditions” is one of the main reasons why many have complete distrust in everything that is published and refer to social media personalities for an “explanation” and finding “truth”. “Expert” is a loose term nowadays because of it.Sometimes, journalists go looking for a story and they certainly find one and often exactly what they were looking for (I am referring to bias here). For example, I am not sure how that bank-run story came to life. I mean it is complete trash. Yet, a respectable outlet, talking to supposedly respectable people, who for whatever reason do not correct the authors… especially disappointed in Prokopenko. She really knows better. Some of the others likely have no expertise on the subject matter to comment at all, but, hey, when has it ever stopped these people (this is a big problem in genral). If you look at the author though, things become pretty clear.

You mean the armoured attack that is almost never happening since 2023?Just a remote question:
The former soil of the Dnjepro-river and the reservoir were declared as swampy, muddy ground, so no attacks across them were made.
My question: Did the dry weather her and the heat in southern Ukraine couased a change in the soil conditions? Is it still that swampy and muddy that it can´t be crossed for example by light motorized units? I am speaking of the area Nikopol to Malokaternyvka.

Do you think Ukraine has troops for another Kursk offensive? Does Russia have logistics (meaning, wants to use them) for another active front or should use extra resources in any one of the already active fronts?
You already pointed it out: "no attacks across them were made". Another Krinki?
