Finland announced yesterday the 8th package to Ukraine. As usual they provide no details of what the package will contain. Finland to deliver more defence materiel assistance to Ukraine

It's great news for Ukraine and Europe.

Norway provided an update on August 30 -- so far total aid of NOK 2.1 billion (210 million USD) has been provided however this includes both humanitarian and non-humanitarian aid. A total of NOK 10 billion (USD 1 billion) has been committed for direct support to Ukraine for 2022/2023: Norwegian support to Ukraine and neighbouring countries

Sweden also announced their 7th package recently (I had a separate post on this: The Russian-Ukrainian War Thread). I have not seen any recent updates from Denmark.

Kherson-Nikolaev-Krivoy Rog.

Map again, usual reservations apply. Russian source are showing a counter-attack at Sukhoi Stavok, but Ukrainian forces have apparently advanced again and combat is marked in Stukhoi Stavok, Kostromka, Karlo-Marksovskoe, and Bezymennoe. Ukrainian forces still appear to be widening the base of the slient, with Urochische Plotnitskoe passin to Ukrainian control. It looks like Russian troops may be partially enveloped around Belaya Krinitsa and Bol'shoe Artakovo. Ukraine's zone of control has also approached Belogorka. A separate Ukrainian push on Davydov Brod is shown, and was discussed in some Russian social media.

On the other side Russian sources are reporting a counter-offensive along the main axis, recapturing Zeleniy Gay and Ternovie Pody. It's not clear at this time what exactly is happening, as there is too much movement. It appears I misread the original map due to there being two villages named Kiselevka, one is an important Russian strong point on the road to Kherson. Another is a separate village near Snegirevka. The former is and apparently always remained under Russian control. The latter is and remains under Ukrainian control.

Footage;

This is footage of dismounts getting hit by artillery. Russian sources claim this is Ukraine's 28th Mech Bde, while some Ukrainian and western sources have claimed these are Russian troops getting hit. The two clips apparently surfaced on Ukrainian sources first, apparently filmed by a Ukrainian quadcopter.

Allegedly Ukrainian troops after a recent attack. We see some soldiers in fighting holes, possibly resting, and a tank, still very much functional, but on fire.

There are reports that some Ukrainian troops were halted, and lost vehicles, due to hitting an unexpected minefield.

Ukraine is still pummeling the Antonov bridge and the pontoon crossing.

EDIT: Footage of the damage to the Antonov bridge and nearby pontoon crossing.

EDIT2: Good footage of Ukrainian troops massing for the offensive.

And a YPR-765 captured by Russian forces.

Energodar-Zaporozhskaya NPP.

Russian sources are reporting Ukraine attempted to seize the Zaporozhskaya NPP ahead of the IAEA visit there. Reportedly ~60 Ukrainian troops landed on 7 boats, and then two barges attempted to land more troops. We don't have footage of the combat action there, only of helos heading in that direction and a burning barge. Reportedly the attack was repulsed and the barges destroyed.

Russian helos over Energodar.

Burning barge.

The IAEA visit took place despite this reported fighting. Reportedly some of their inspectors stayed behind at the plant. They were shown damage to the plant from recent fighting.

I'm starting to think that this Ukrainian attack may have been fictional. With a small group of infiltrators/resistance fighters in Kherson we got footage of their captured equipment, and plenty of sounds of the firefight. Here for apparently a decent size Ukrainian attack all we got is a burning river barge, and some grainy footage of helos flying over Energodar.

I cannot think of a reason why UKR would float a barge (unpowered ?) with 60 men to the NPP ? What possibly would be to gain ?

The story is that 7 boats with up to 60 men landed, and then two barges with additional troops were supposed to be the second wave. Somewhat questionable since they'd be vulnerable. On the other hand Russia still can't silence Ukrainian artillery.

I call BS on those claims. While not inconeivable that UKR forces would launch a cross river raid of some kind if they where to do so it would be based upon reward to risk ratio. Attacking the nuclear plant which they would have no chance of helping and would inflict minimal casualties and damage upon the Russian forces just isn't enough reward for the risk even more so when you factor in the international inspection that was on its way/under way. The UKR forces aren't exactly stupid and the smart play if they where to launch a raid would be to do it away from a key point of contention slipping forces in behind the lines to do damage, Not try and capture an asset that they want to be demilitrized.

YPR-765 captured by Russian forces.

Put this more as this is consider first video confirmation that Russia already put T-90M in that Kherson front. Shown T-90M pull that YPR-765. I believe some assesment before, put Russia field more secondary Tank assets like old T-62 or T-72 on that front.

This is a really interesting perspective from a Russian soldier who volunteered after his son was killed in the first few weeks of the war. He is totally disillusioned of course. Poorly trained, poorly equipped and no real motivation to fight. He complains about the Ukrainian Soldiers being better equipped than the Russians and questions why they are in the Ukraine in the first place.

This raises two questions. Could the location be mis-identified? Did it actually get captured in Kharkov? If the location is correct, then we have our first confirmation of the T-90M on that front. Moreover the label says the 503rd Rgt. If correct, this is the second unit with T-90Ms in the war zone.

Russia.

Russian air defenses engaged something over Sevastopol', Donuzlav bay, and Yevpatoriya, again.

Lepestok land mines were found near Shebetinskoe, Belgorod region, after Ukrainian artillery fires in the area.

There are reports that Russia is forming a 3rd Army Corps. The formation is apparently received new and refurbished equipment and vehicles, including T-90Ms, and T-80BVs, BMP-3s, Tornado-U trucks, etc. Reportedly the formation is training in the 333rd Training Center in Mulino. The formation will allegedly consist of;

6th Motor-Rifles Division
10th Tank rgt
54th Motor-Rifles Rgt
55th Motor-Rifles Rgt
27th Artillery Rgt
72nd Separate Motor-Rifles Rgt
17th High-Power Artillery Rgt
44th AA Coy
52nd Separate AA bde (or division apparently though all land forces separate air defense formations are bdes)
148th Intelligence Coy
9th SpN Platoon
38th Engineer Btln
8th CBRN Btln
154th Separate Rpr Btln

There are a bunch of things to say about this. First off the 10th Tanks, 54-55th MRRs, and 27th Arty look like they might be contents of the 6th MRD. Second off the "high-power" artillery is really a bad translation. It's "superheavy artillery", namely 2S7s and 2S4s, probably a btln of each. Third off, listing separate Coys and Plts together with entire regiments doesn't make sense. A "9th SpN plt" sounds crazy. The number 3rd is also interesting. The 1st and 2nd Army Corps are the DNR and LNR formations respectively. Why would Russia form a 3rd Corps is unclear. On the other hand even anti-Russian sources like CIT have talked about this.

A Russian repair and evacuator btln is being formed in Primor'ye. The line between volunteer formations and de-facto new contract soldier btlns is getting thin.

Kursk region, a Russian tractor hit UXO, presumably Ukrainian.

The German Iris-T is supposed to be delivered to Ukraine in a few weeks.

It's much simpler, where is any proof of this attack?
There is none, all of this information is created to divert attention from any pressing problems.
Think of Snake Island. As soon as it became known that it was impossible to hold the island, the Russians began to talk about how they shot down 100 bayraktars and tactically retreated. Naturally, there was no evidence.
And so here, they claim about 30!!!! boats destroyed, where is any proof? Have all the boats and soldiers disappeared? And there is a photo of the only non-self-propelled barge (by the way, a similar barge was found by photo in Kherson).
But once they destroyed the Dutch APC. A million photos appeared.
Despite the statements about the failed attack and how cleverly the Russians lure the AFU into a trap, the AFU captured the village of Ozernoye, Vysokopolye. There are reports of the liberation of Yampol, Andreevka and Sukhoy Stavok.

Also, a Russian Pantsir missile system was destroyed in Oleshki, of course Russian propaganda said that it was driving in the wrong position and just exploded (Facepalm)

The Sydney Morning Herald this morning has the Ukrainian ambassador requesting 30 Hawkeis so they can battle test them for us
Sounds like a win-win

Yeah, with no evidence emerging after this long, it's safe to dismiss as lies.

The last map from Russian sources still shows Ukraine fighting in that salient. So despite statements from the Russian MoD and pro-Russian sources, I don't think there is any credibility to this being a trap. I think that, if it's not another fictional episodes (and we're still lacking good footage of that entire battle) then Ukraine managed to break open Russia's defense line, and drive deep into it.

Also, a Russian Pantsir missile system was destroyed in Oleshki, of course Russian propaganda said that it was driving in the wrong position and just exploded (Facepalm)
Well it was definitely driving in the wrong position. The position it was driving in got hit. If it was driving in another position, maybe several kms away, it wouldn't have been destroyed. From where I sit, any position you're going to get destroyed in is the wrong one... :D

EDIT: Russian sources are confirming a withdrawal at Vysokopol'ye allegedly under threat if encirclement.

Bigger map.

Feanor are you in a position to know the rates of pay for the Russian military engaged in the Ukraine conflict and if the classification of the conflict, war or special action has any bearings on the rates of pay ?

I'm sure the information is available but I don't have it easily accessible. I can tell you that some of the volunteer formations discussed in this thread are paying upwards of 100k rubles per month, with sign-up bonuses of 100k-300k rubles. These are very attractive paychecks, especially in the provinces. Iirc various pre-war PMC outfits offered pay to the tune of ~170k rubles per month and it was quite competitive.

Post 1 of 2: A partial reply to Jaykaro

Despite the statements about the failed attack and how cleverly the Russians lure the AFU into a trap, the AFU captured the village of Ozernoye, Vysokopolye. There are reports of the liberation of Yampol, Andreevka and Sukhoy Stavok.
1. Thank you for your post. In general, forum members in this thread, show deep skepticism towards attempts to inject propaganda from either side. In Aug 2022, Ukraine has been advertising its intention to conduct a offensive in its southern territories occupied by Russia. Exploiting a breakthrough in Kherson Oblast, advanced units of the Ukrainian Army are reported to have taken the village of Bezimenne.

2. After successfully defending in the Donbas against repeated unsuccessful Russian attacks, Ukraine inserted new forces to Kherson when they saw an opportunity — while these new forces are mostly infantry battalions, but these battalions thrown into attack also include a few Armoured Battle Groups (ABGs), which have tanks and APCs working together, supported organic artillery. These ABGs are taking the opportunity to attack and trap a large Russian force in Kherson, with a river at their back and limited lines of communications.
(a) The areas where fighting is occurring has logistics routes (or Lines of Communication). East is Zaporizhzhya, west is Mykolays'ka, to the South is Crimea. Therefore, Kherson is critical to the Southern fight.
(b) Zelensky announced that Ukrainian forces liberated two unnamed settlements in southern Ukraine and one settlement in Donetsk Oblast on 4 Sept 2022.
(c) Russia took a large number of troops from the slugfest on the Donbas front, where Russia has for months concentrated most of its troops and effort with relatively little to show for it—and moved them to the south, including Zaporizhzhia Oblast and Crimea, though reports on the latter were of Crimea being more of a staging area.
(d) The Ukrainian liberation of Vysokopillya ignited critical discussions among some Russian milbloggers while the Russian Defense Ministry maintained that Ukrainian forces continued to conduct “unsuccessful attempts” to advance — which is typical Russian propaganda bullsh!t.
3. By now, it is clear that the Ukrainian strategy is to exhaust Russian forces. I believe that the Ukrainian forces have enough resources and forces to restrain Russian combat power in southern Ukraine, for the next 3 to 5 weeks — they would not have started this fight, if they did not preposition logistics for this effort to last at least this duration.
(a) Russian milbloggers have made more bullsh!t claims that Ukrainian advances southeast of the bridgehead are contingent upon their ability to accumulate more reserves and noted that Russian forces are intensely firing at Ukrainian forces in the Andriivka area. Ukrainian forces continued to strike Russian lines of communication, ammunition depots, and key positions to support Ukrainian ground offensive efforts.
(b) Social media footage showed a large smoke plume in Kozatske (on the right bank of the Dnipro River near Nova Kakhovka), where Ukrainian officials previously reported destroying a Russian pontoon crossing on 3 Sept 2022. Ukrainian HIMARS or artillery have also struck a Russian ferry crossing in Beryslav (north of Nova Kakhovka), and social media users published footage of Ukrainian forces striking a segment of the Antonivsky Road Bridge on the left bank of the Dnipro River.
(c) Nova Kakhovka is an important port city on Dnieper River and the Kakhovka Reservoir, with a population of 45k. The city is currently occupied by Russian forces. A Russian convoy was targeted while attempting crossing the Nova Kakhovka lock-bridge. Recently, this lock was targeted 2 times during 24/08 and once on 21/08. After which, the Nova Kakhovka lock-bridge has collapsed.
(d) Ukrainian attacks on ferry crossings are likely in direct support of ongoing offensive operations to retake lost territory, as the disruptions generated by such strikes are more ephemeral than those caused by attacks on bridges and the Nova Kakhovka lock-bridge.

4. The emergence of a "Kherson pocket" (a smaller version of the WWII "Falaise Pocket") is interesting.
(a) Ukraine is dictating to Russia the way the war is now going, never a position you want to be in when your side is the one invading a country, a telltale sign of Russia’s weakening position as now it must compromise its plans and aims and be reactionary.

(b) Ukrainian forces are advancing along several axes in western Kherson Oblast and have secured territory across the Siverskyi Donets River in Donetsk Oblast.
