Not so fast Big E.

The largest non-transport combat ship in the Philippine Navy is the ex-USS Atherton, Cannon class, destroyer escort -- launched in 1943. It had the distinction of sinking a U-boat in WWII. She was transferred to the PN in 1976, and is still in service.

A naval museum has reportedly been "courting" the Philippine Navy to allow them to purchase the ship.

With the exception of Peacock class OPVs that we got from the British in '97, the bulk of our patrol craft that are above 600 tons in displacement are also 40's vintage PCEs. The same goes for our LSTs

Hmm you seriously need a lot of new replacements, given the neighbors you have... starting with China and its strongly growing navy.
I'd suggest you go the same path as Mexico, ie a mix of big OPVH, smaller patrol crafts, and some FACs with SSMs.

If your concerned with China you need some of those new Russian stealth missile boats.

Mobile shore-based missile batteries can also be useful... or you can also equip the trainer jets with Marte Mk2 ASMs (though you'd need to install the most basic Grifo radar aboard the S211)

If we ever get worried about China`s navy, we just call the US for help. Actually I believe China is still many light years to become a real blue water navy.

Actually we were talking about the Philippines (sorry we got off topic) - and they are threatened by even a brown water Chinese navy

No offense, but can you please stay a bit quiet about these 40's vintage ships of ours? As a fellow Filipino, this is getting embaressing already.:eek:

The government should consider purchasing at least a handfull of first generation, refurbished Exocet missiles, those can be mounted on the Peacock class corvettes and should still be of some use.

This is a statement of fact. Have you lost touch with Filipino humor? (Stay tuned for a thread about the current state of the PN).

The Peacocks have stability problems. Mounting Exocets will simply aggravate this problem. At any rate, the issues we face do not require such expensive systems at this time.

Agree. What you need is a dozen modern OPVH like Mexico's. By the way, their embarked helo could carry powerful ASMs ranging from the smaller (AS15TT and Sea Skua) to the bigger (Marte Mk2S is my favourite with its 30km range :D )

This new model seems to have more firepower. If you notice there are some type of ''missile launchers'' in the midle. Also in the front behind the cannon there is something that also looks like a missile launcher that would shoot vertically. Interesting indeed he? Lucky me for finding this image that nobody else has.

Wow, 3D radar (Smart ?), VLS (ESSM ?), RAM and Harpoon ... this is a serious multi-role FFG !! Are the Mexicans ready to scrap Bronsteins and Knox for a powerful FFG class ?

Mexican navy has got some ships but they have got no any capable of SSM maybe when they bought israeli corvets but I am not sure.

Please look at the video. You'll see a former Israeli Saar IV launching a SSM, most probably a Gabriel.

You are right This is Aliya class Saar 4.5 israeli corvette and it is firing Gabriel.This corvets are also the worlsd smallest helicopter carrier ships.:cool:

The ship in the open frames is my old ship. the former USS McCloy DE-1038, which was transfer to the Mexican Navy as Nicholas Bravo(?)
We used to make regular tours in the North Atlantic in that little thing.
