Sea trials, LHD (JCI)

I would rather see another AWD than an LHD for obvious reasons
The smaller LHD seems interesting, I still think the RAN got the right one (two?) tho! But would certainly be suitable for countries like S.A that seem to be assessing other simular sized ships. I think spain will have a real advantage as its become a proven partner with many nations offering many build options and able to deliver on time and within budget.

Yes, with 2 LHD's and hopefully a Bay (or simular), Australia has amazing amphibious capability (in terms of assets) for our comparitive size and region.

Hope we get that 4th AWD. I see it as the critical missing link in Australia's defence.

I have taken this from a Spanish Navy Forum, " foro de la armada española" and thought it would be appropriate to post it here.

Its a picture of JCI together with a F100 and an F80, all three ship types are/will be operated by the RAN.

An image is worth a thousand words in this case.

Arhh I see. Hmm didn't recognise the outline, totally dwarfed by the LHD.

We will have overlap in FFG7/AWD operation? I assume we proberly would?

Specially after spending millions recently on the upgrade of all 4 FFG's, I'd imagine they'll be around for a while yet.
The first of the upgraded Adelaides will go before the commissioning of Hobart, otherwise Hobart will not have a crew.

Rumour has it that two Adelaides will have to go to ensure there is a full crew plus trainers for Hobart, as none of the Adelaides appear to be operating with a full crew at the moment. Factor in that there may well be an overlap between the trials periods of Hobart and Sydney, there could actually be a need to decommission three Adelaides before a single Hobart enters service.

Considering that the RAN will be trying to crew the LHDs in the same time period it is doubtful that a fourth AWD or third LHD could be crewed.

Sydney will be the first one to go?
I would have thought that all the FFG's are fully manned at present, given that the RAN is pretty much full up these days and recruitment at an all time high.
Given that there are a lot of additional shore positions ATM, I haven't heard anything regarding manning levels dropping :)

Agreed

We're still getting emails with people sitting around trying to get sea time for comps, etc. Manooras specialist trainees are being offered to anyone with a billet, but at this point not many ships can take them as they are full up themselve. Noting Anzacs docking for upgrade where their crew was spread across the fleet, most Anzacs should be full. Some people ashore are mearly waiting for Success to return to swap out, while GAP years are unable to get onboard anywhere as we're full up.

The great problem i have is people ashore hiding away from sea rides, etc to let ship based crews allow people to take leave and have someone train for few weeks off east coast.

Sydney is in poor shape, and will need to go well before the time allotted, but will brass go through with it is another thing.

There are 2 Anzac's and 2 MHC in, extended readiness ATM.
Sydney is off to fire a missle or 2 soon.

If recruitment is insufficent then thats something we can work on. I would imagine the IOC etc of the LHD and the AWD will be planned so its possible in terms of bodies.

RAN should be hitting recruitment pretty hard now, it will be a totally different navy in 10 years. Throughly modern equipment, the envy of (almost) any navy in the world.

The problem is what to put people on until that happens. Reactivate vampire and use her as a training ship? If we can't put ships to sea, then we will shoot ourselves in our feet in terms of recruitment, retention and training.

Already pretty much done for the recruiting for the new ships.
FSU in Sydney has copious amounts of MT, ET and BM sailors waiting in the wings. The rest of the RAN is almost full up at the moment, with many branches already being overborne at the moment. With the crews of the 3 fat ships as well, I don't think manning any of the new vessels will be an issue.

Agree, if anything its the opposite at the moment as SB has pointed out above, I read a quote from CN las week (and will provide a link when I find it again) that the current problem is the hordes of inexperienced Junior Sailors waiting in the ranks at the moment, but they knew this would always be the case for the build up towards the Fat Ships coming on-line

Another momentous occasion for JCI, first landing of a AV8B+ and the start of a month endurance test mission, full crew + 287 heads aboard

El buque de proyección estratégica ‘Juan Carlos I’ inicia un crucero de resistencia de más de un mes - Navy News - Armada Española

Down to the Canary Islands and then to Estambul (looking for the Turkish contract I guess)

Three helos the AV8 and their crews will complete the certification tests.
It carries 100 marines some vehicles and two LCM-1E

I would not be surprised if there are some RAN officers aboard.
