Russian Air Force News & Discussion

Al-41 (item 117 on test bed). Interesting quote in the video....
"T-50 will enter service with 117, which satisfies most of airforce's requirements....... except reduce radar visibility"

Is that a reference to exposed engine blades in front (where stage 2 engine might have compressor blades made up of radar absorbent material) or is he talking about the nozzles ?

Nice info about 117M engines there.:)

Any news about the Su-30SMs?
I think its a given they will get an Russian Bahramos like missile upgrade , for its intended role down in the Black Sea region, were they reportedly will be stationed and function as RuNavy assets?

This link and similar issues might have something to do with my question:

The Su-30SMs are a few years away. Also as of now, no plans for BrahMos induction by AVMF or VVS. Only 12 of them will be stationed with BSF, replacing Fencers. The other iirc 28 are to be VVS, and where they will go is unclear.

I agree, that the Su-30SMs are a few years away. Most likely due to IAPOs order books rather than pending funding from Russian MoD.
Though I'm not sure i the order has been signed yet..

Anyway, i got the latest AI.
Just a little update, it is certainly news to me..
By Piotr Butowski.
"RSK Mig has recently ordered the Latest Klimov RD-33MKM turbofan engines rated at 9.5kgf Wet thrust."

Also, the Indian's Mig-29K uses the RD-33MK which rates 9kgf Wet thrust.
Compaired to the baseline RD-33 rated 8.3kgf.
And the Indian Mig-29UPG upgrade has the RD-33 M3 series

My though is that the newly uprated MKM engine series will be target for the RuNavy Mig-29KS and/or an order of Mig-35.
I think the M3 series is just below the RD-33MK performance.

And a little on RSK MIG portfolio for 2010; Total 10.8 billion Rubles.
Breaking it down further,
Syria Mig-29M contract = 3.5billion.
Yemen = 1.3billion.
India Mig-29UPG = 3.2billion.

As of March 1, 2011, RSK MIG portfolio worth $4.4billion including 45 Indian Mig-29K and further Mig-29UPG upgrade of 62 more.
By end of this year the Ru MoD is expected to order 24 RuNavy Mig-29KS, and the muddy prospect on 48 Mig-35.

On the Mig-35 order, given the latest interview with Zelin. He does downplay the Mig-35 order, as the Russian MoD priority on Su-XX orders and its improved capabilities over the Mig-35.

So it's 6 EO sensors, 1 KS-V in front, 1 KS-O behind the cockpit, two KS-U on the sides in the font of the fuselage, with 2 more sensors locations and designations unknown.

And we're looking at 5 radars. One large X-band AESA, two side X-band, and two L-band.

Do you have the rest of that article? It seems to cut off right as it's about to go into a detailed look at the KAB-250.

The KAB 250 is a 250kg precision-guided missile L:3.2m, diameter= 255mm, 550mm fin span. This missile is carried on the T-50 W-bay by a UVKU-50L ejection launcher.

A little news on Ru Missile development.
Source: AI

The medium-range RVV-SD version has completed the trials and series prod is under way.
An launch on RVV-SD(K-77-1) missile was launched for the first time by
an Su-27SM3 back in sept 2010.

According to Obnosov, trials of smaller RVV-MD missile should have been completed this summer, and the RVV-BD by year end.
While the K-37M was launched from a Mig-31BM for the first time earlier this summer.

It is also highlighted that none of these missile are intended for Pak-Fa internal W-bay carriage..
Those missile are still reported at an early stage of deveopment.

The Medium range K-77M and K-74M2 short range missile will be ready for serial prod at 2014 and 2015, and a new long range missile will be ready some time after this.

Better late than never i guess.. Looks like VVS will get the RVV missile series by next year and counting.

It's all good provided you're adding your own comments and listing the source and/or posting a link to it. Which you're doing, so no worries. :)

RAC MiG has started serial production of a new batch of shipborne MiG-29K/KUB fighters for Indian NAVY in accordance with a contract signed in March 2010. Simultaneously RAC MiG is performing contract on delivery of 16 MiG-29K/KUBs to the Indian naval forces, signed in 2004. The first jets have been delivered in late 2009.

Looks like the IN ordered Mig-29K from the second follow-up contract are allready on the Mig Rac floor. Some nice pics there too.

Soo thats 16 + 29 total. How long will those 29K be in service, with an midlife upgrade perhaps 2025?

I think they might start phasing them out around 2030 and start replacing them with AMCA, at least for carrier operations. 20 years of carrier operations will anyway won't leave their air frame with much life.

Russia plans to start An-70 production in the 2014 timeframe, leaving Ukranian Aviant in an unpleasant position. Ukranian orders for the aircraft are unlikely to be very large, and export opportunities for the aircraft are limited. Russia is also funding over half of the development cost for the An-70.

They did use the Su-34 for EW and SEAD missions. That was a pretty big improvement for them.

Yes, quite right.
But in their defence, the Georgian conflict was not pre-planned to the extent of other conflicts like Destert Storm, Libya, etc etc.

They was in a hurry, that with the bad Intel/network capability led to lots of blue on blue and poor decision making during those few days.

If the RuAF had a month time of preperation prior the the conflict. Things would look different i think.

If all preperation goes as planned, the next T-50-3 will make first flight in November.

Edit:
I do want to add that this third prototype is reported to get an operational prototype of the Russian AESA N-036 radar and some other sensors like the optical KS-XX.
If there are no changes to the outer layout, i guess it is safe to say Sukhoi has nailed the final feature of the Pak-Fa airframe.

is there any particular reason they chose to maintain the (rounded) protrusions of the engines on the bottom of the platform, versus using panels to provide a uniform/flat design on the bottom? just curious -

That could change in the future, some 6-8 years from now, but it have to go along the next 5th gen engines, 16.5-18kgf with a new type nozzles.

Just speculation at this point though..

That was pretty bad but in the end they did come out victorious, the only thing is they used the oldest equipment they had in the air...Su-24's and TU-22M3's...

I really hate those 2 planes, I just wish Russia could retire them already.

There's nothing wrong with the Tu-22M3, provided they get the upgraded targetting systems they were testing in iirc 2009. That will allow them to carry a decent quantity of PGMs, with range and altitude that few other VVS assets have. There's also quite a few of them. Within Russia's immediate neighborhood, they can be considered a strategic asset.

The Su-24M is indeed outdated, but the M2 upgrade brings the Su-24s up quite a bit. They are due to start being phased out from AirBase 7000 some time next year, as the first line Su-34 squadron is formed.

On a different note the VVS has just taken delivery of the first two newly built Mi-26 helos. The total contract with Rosvertol is for 18 helos by 2015. Two more are due later this year. Rumors have it a second contract for 15 more in 2015-2020 time frame is either already signed, or close to it.

http://bmpd.livejournal.com/97365.html

I wonder how much different that conflict would of gone if they did have a full squadron of Su-34's..

and how much longer does Russia plan on using any TU-22M3's? Are there even any concepts for potential replacements?

As of right now there is a proposed replacement for all long-range aviation bombers, in the form of the PAK-DA. But as it stands, the project is on paper. There is also a proposed upgrade for it, called the Tu-22M5. However I don't know if that has gone beyond 1-2 airframes.
