It looks like Mark Mitchell is egging on Ron Mark to hurry up and decide on the transport fleet.
Probably handy to have some one else come in make all the arguments and take the flack from the left, for most likely the same equipment he would have wanted under national. I feel some what less anxious with Ron Mark as def min now, if it was a straight labour government i'd hate to think where the defence force would end up.

From the article it doesn't really make clear if he is referring to the the p8 over the herc for priority, or the replacement aircraft for the herc, probably the former.

excerpt from article
"When you talk about climate change and weather-related issues in the Pacific, it's actually the Hercules that do the heavy lifting in terms of getting medical aid and supplies into remote or tough areas to access."

Mr Mitchell said he knows what decision he'd make if he were still the minister"

Defence force urged to replace 50-year-old Hercules fleet

While I agree it’s the tactical lifter that’s does the hard yards, but P3/8 would generally go first overflying the area to check on the damage. All area of defence contribute in their own way.

Despite the fact that Golriz is very easy on the eyes why do we allow foreign born people and dual citizens to become members of parliament?
Foreign born people? 85% of the population of your country is made up of or descended from immigrants who've arrived in the last 200 years, or a bit less, & half the rest have some immigrant ancestry. Giving the foreign-born lesser rights is contrary to the origins of New Zealand.

Dual citizenship - yes, as long as the country of origin accepts renunciation of citizenship. Some countries don't. So I don't think you can do more in those cases than ask for naturalised citizens to renounce foreign allegiances.

Slightly off topic, but if New Zealand do decide on either KC 390 Embraer for tactical lift, or C2 for Strategic, would there be issues getting them integrated with Usa mission systems, countermeasures ect? Regards to intellectual property too, Us only selling tech to certain allies.

Well the RAF appear to have no problems with A400 in that area. Like the UK, Japan wouldn't have major issues acquiring the necessary US tech. However Brazil, even with Boeing participation, would most likely be a different story.

Agree it should not be too big a problem, but if there is there’s always the FMS route and L3 Communications, like the RAAF did with G550 ISR birds

Ive read both planes use commonly sourced commercial jet engines,am i right? So that should mean repair, servicing or replacement of parts shouldnt be an issue. And we may be waiting months yet, before any decision on air transport is made?

The KHI C-2 uses the General Electric GE CF6-80C2K1F which is used on the Airbus A300, A310 & A330, Boeing 767, KC-767 (used by JASDF) Boeing VC-25 (Air Force 1), DC-10, KC-10 and C-5M Galaxy plus some others. The Embraer KC-90 uses the IAE V2500-E5 engines which are used on the Airbus A320 family and the MD90. So if the KC-390 were selected, it would be using the same engines as the Air NZ A320s. The GE CF6 of the C-2 probably could be serviced by the Air NZ / P&W Jet Engine Centre in Christchurch.

Ar sorry, I thought you were talking about any internal secure equipment like tactical radios or ISR gear. NG posted above about all the other bits and pieces

Sorry Ngahi,
GE engines would not be serviced by P&W .Air NZ used to service them in Auckland until about 2006 .Any remaining CF6 engines that are in in that are in the NZ fleet (767 only ) have been overhauled by MTU in Germany .I would guess that any CF6 engines would be sent overseas as are the RR engines powering the 757's.
the Christchurch facility only handles V2500's

Great thanks for that. I thought that the ChCh Engine centre was a broad church, but it seems that it isn't.

Still , that might work quite nicely, having servicing for the same engines there. especially if KC 390 is used for the Antarctic resupply missions ,though figures im getting online vary as to wether or not it has the range required?

The USN P-8 program manager, speaking at Farnborough, has said that NZ (along with Norway) will receive its first P-8 in 2022. Boeing have started on the first RAF P-8.
Link mentioned foriegn militay sales for additional aircraft, so does that mean if RNZAF do find 4 is insufficient to cover all missions after operating them for few years, we could get an extra P8?

You could in theory order after but I’m not sure when the cut off is for final orders

I believe that time for last orders is quite near, because otherwise the NZG wouldn't have been ordering now.

On paper yes it does mean that, for as long as they are still taking orders that is! However, whilst an extra air-frame would be wise, I suspect it is very unlikely that'll come to pass for NZ. The reason I say that is the DefMin has already set the tone around that, indirectly, by stating a Defence Capability Review due later this year will look at a potential 'complimentary capability'.The latter is where they'll be looking for additional capability. Four it is...

The latest Air Force news has a break down on what the $2.3 Billion purchases:

4x P8 airframes
3 X classrooms
2 X Mobile Tactical Operation Centres
1 Double bay hangar & office/ spares warehousing
1 X flight simulator
1 X weapons tactics simulator
1 X virtual maintenance simulator

All in all about what I expected they do mention weapons and other equipment. My tablet won't let me upload the magazine good read for this morning.

From the same publication, they also get:
  • Initial spares and Ground Support Equipment
  • Initial quantity of torpedoes with support and wing kits; initial sonobouy requirements
  • Apron and various taxiway upgrades at Ohakea
So I wonder if they will acquire enough Mk-54 torpedoes to replace the RNZN Mk-46 mod 5 stocks for the FFHs and the Seasprites.
