Skandi Bergen will only be in ADF service for around 18 months until HMAS Canberra is commissioned then it is off to Customs to replace the leased Oceanic Protector. One problem with commissioning the ship is the RAN might not let it go… Part of the funding case of the purchase is that the ship will offset future ship leases for the Customs ship. The other argument is political and further positions for Australian merchant sailors supports the Gillard Government’s push to Australianise coastal shipping. Of course it might not work… and we might have a HMAS Skandi Bergen which should displace HMAS Lolita as the dumbest name in RAN history.
They would change the name, to something to suit the masses in a tight electorate...know any old ALP ministers about to pass away?

Then if we want it to go on station off Fiji for another coup, or anywhere else in the pacific region as Choules is in dock or overseas already committed, what can we do if the Unions dont agree with the deployment, this utilisation is so vague that planning for its use will be minimal and pointless. Bravo Defmin, you made another stupid decision that hopefully will bite you on the rear.
yeah, well there's probably more of this solution model to come....

IIRC the greeks have 5 ~4,500 ton LSTs i think theyre 10-15 years old. they would make a good gap filler.

god knows they could use the money.
Laid down 1987-1989, not commissioned until 1994-2000 because the shipyard was going bust. But AFAIK they're not for sale.

The Italians would happily sell you a couple of 8000 dock landing ships, commissioned 1987-88, but I'm not sure when the first can be delivered.

It was just announced the Australian Department of Defence has signed a contract to buy the Skandi Bergen. I'm sorry but at this stage I am unable to post the link to the Minister's announcement.

It states that the Skandi Bergen is a sister to the ACV Ocean Protector. I thought the Ocean Protector was the ex Skandi Bergen??

@swerve : Wait a year and France might be in the mood to sell Sirocco.
Why is that?
And i doubt that will be a priority for the RAN, as i gather we will require a replenishment ship urgently

dumb question: if we are seriously paying 130 million for Skandi bergen and however much for windermere why didnt they just offer that much to the Royal Navy (Well RFA) to buy a second bay class? flog tobruk until its ready and then retire her immediately. that way we fill the gap and we get the Strategic sealift vessel while were at it.

none available. the SDSR only released one Bay class, although bulwark is in extended readiness...

Theres still the UKs next budget, things could easily change as their current government shows signs of being as silly as the one we are lumbered with.

i wonder if we could crew Bulwark Atm. altho i suppose with the twins ~500 crew and choules only using ~150 we could manage the 300. we could certainly if Toobroken is retired immediately

im sure if we asked the brits current government nicely they would free up another Bay

get rid of tobroken, and utilise the some of the 300+ bodies lying around Fleet support Unit, and you would be well on your way. By time the HMAS Canberra comes around there will be enough personnel lying around, with a few more brought through recruitment. Keep Choules and a bulwark crew happy, they stay in and go across in a more senior position. Its doable with planning, but it wont work as it requires planning...

Is Bulwark suitable for the Great Southern Ocean?
This is one of the big selling points of the Windemere and the Skandi Bergen.

i would imagine its as well suited to the southern ocean as Kanimbla, Manoora and Tobruk. the ships that are being replaced...

does anyone know when the next Brit budget will be announced?

and their replacement has to be why?

im trying to make the point that patroling deep south has always been a customs thing and they already have the vessel/s to do so. there is no need to waste money just because its suited to the south ocean.

i would much rather the government spend 130mn on another Bay/Bulwark then a civilian ship just because the civilian ship is suited to the southern ocean.

P.S has any Australian amphib ever deployed to the Southern Ocean other then when their just passing thru?

Yep, HMAS Labuan L3501, a Mk3 LST did 7 trips to Heard & Macquarie Islands for ANARE between 1947 & 1951.
Though not an amphib HMAS Stalwart did a resupply trip to Macquarie Island in 1985.
Cheers

Bulwark isn't for sale. The policy is to keep one LPD in commission, & that means we need two.

And keep your hands off the Bays! Build your own ships!

Why build our own ? Does not make sense when we have a stockpile ready to choose from in the Motherland :D

It will be interesting to see what the budget brings for the UK, will they have lost some of that mass hysteria ?
