I am sure the folks living in Largs Bay , SA see nothing wrong with the name HMAS Largs Bay... I wouldn't wish to be the politician to say otherwise...

Knowing the way the labour party is going with the need to lift their popularity with the electorate, and Wayne Swan opened up the piggy bank he might just call it HMAS Swan Bay:p:

The only thing in Largs Bay is the SA Police Academy and a couple of streets of housing development. Its not quite a major geographic feature or suburb of Adelaide. Isn't even a bay.

It's only military link is that Largs Bay was originally a Fort and it was the Colonial Naval Port

When they thought that the Russians had designs on australia, they went and installed some Naval Canon and some ironclad....

It was never of any significance apart from the SA Colonial Govt being delusional and that they would take on the Russians if they sailed up the GAB.

Federally it has no historical links.

Largs Bay was kept on as an Army fixed defence into the 1950s with two 152mm CA guns, though only on maintenance after WWII. It was even to be modernised with a battery of three of the new 133mm CA/AA guns at the end of the war but I don't think they were ever installed. Only Moresby, Fremantle, Whyalla, Adelaide and Sydney were to get the new 133mm gun batteries.

Below I have linked a scaled computer graphic of the Juan Carlos I BPE, a near sister ship of a Canberra class LHD. Notice that a AB-212 helicopter without folding blades hangs over the aft helicopter lift and there is considerable space for the forward length of the blade. The same can be done with a port/starboard lift as well.

I am sure most of us have noticed on a cruise ship the considerable wind gusts on the sun deck atop a ship. When there is no wind there is a wind considering the forward speed of a ship. Some passengers hang out aft on the stern watching a ship's wake to avoid the wind, with the ship acting as a wind break. The same applies to aft helicopter lifts as well...

Simply put there is more protection from the wind aboard a ship aft...

SLAP! :nono Quick call the Looney Bin! this man is clearly delusional! :crazy

For reasons I have already posted IMHB it will be a travesty if the MH-90R gets up
MH-90R? Is that the hybrid political solution with all the dodgy euro systems shoe horned into the Seahawk? Or perhaps its the US systems fitted to the NH-90.

Travesty or in other words typical politics and SE QLD vote buying as a main consideration given Qld is in a election year.

Just badge engineer it.. Call it the Eurocopter MH-60R.

For the money we spend I really wonder how much we get out of assembly here. Just buy a helicopter that we can operate.

Well the only example of that in any Helo purchased in the last 15 years would be the A109 lease.

SH-2G fail, Tiger fail, MHR-90 fail, 2 out of 3 are not terminal, and are on track to be rectified it would seen, not a good track record for helo's though. Has Aus Gov/ADF learnt lessons, well we will soon find out.

as a pleb looking from the outside, I think the days of the forces having real input into defence purchasing needs restoring, rather than the gov over-riding and making a political decision and then blaming them when there are problems trying to get a silk purse out of a sows ear

a bit off topic but worth it, those aussie test pilots earn their beer
Prism Defence Test Pilots, Flight Test Engineers and Aerospace Engineers have just completed a three and a half week trial with the Danish Lynx Mark 90B helicopter onboard the Danish Inspection Vessel EJNAR MIKKELSEN

And there still doesnt seem to be a date yet for the MRH-90's to enter Navy service. See recent Navy News article below, page 2:

Defence Newspapers | Navy News

And the Sea Kings set to be retired this December, see link below:

Alert - Department of Defence

I would have thought that Navy would continue with the Sea Kings until there is a clear date for the MRH-90's service introduction rather than creating another capability gap.

From all I've read in recent times the Sea Kings are performing very well these days and the maintenance is up to scratch.

Seems ironic that when Largs Bay enters service early next year and if there is another disaster in our region that we wont have maritime utility helo's available to operate from her or Tobruk, if she is in service.

So I guess it will probably fall back onto the Blackhawks to fill that utility role for the Navy.

It appears the sea trail of RFA Largs Bay happened last week, all is fine and the trails confirmed and she is as advertised. The first two payments have been made of $66 million in total has paid for the ship.

She should be here at the end of the year.:pope
