If NUSHIP Brisbane has sailed today then I am yet again gob smacked and the lack of news out of ASC, BAE and DoD. Talk about a media black hole.

No real news on the keel laying of NUSHIP Supply either which is staggering, just a tweet and a facebook post

Really .... WTF are they doing from a media perspective ....at least Navantia provided something in their news

This is all I could find and only was released a couple of hours ago. The Alliance online performance is pathetic and we've said this on a number of occasions .

Agree, the media coverage has been pretty ordinary, to say the least.

This might cheer you up, came across this on the 'Australian Defence Magazine' website:

Brisbane begins sea trials - Australian Defence Magazine

The article also includes 5mins or so of some pretty good quality vision of Brisbane leaving the wharf and heading out for her sea trials.

On a side note, Sydney in the background, is looking pretty much complete (externally at least).

Enjoy!!!!

Thanks for that John, yeah Sydney is looking pretty good back there indeed, it all seems to be happening pretty quickly now !

On a side note, I hope they did not pay anyone for that drone footage :(

Thank you, at least someone reported on it. I still cannot believe the only reporting on Supply was a friggin facebook post and a tweet

Not quite sure what you expect but I think the wrong people may be being blamed - what the mainstream media picks up is up to them. There were press releases from both the Minister and the Alliance on Brisbane starting trials, including the pics and the footage, which seem to be being used by the specialist media. I have no particular knowledge of what the AOR Project might have done but there was a Ministerial release about the names and the imminent keel laying.

I have to side with the others on this. One would think that NUSHIP Brisbane starting sea trials would be a story worth having on the main Defence page, or if not that, then on the News & Media subpage. Having it listed as a Ministerial release basically buries the story so that a casual visitor would not find it, unless they had hard about it from some other source and then went searching for it. The situation with HMAS Supply and HMAS Stalwart is even worse, having go into the link for More Stories on the Ministerial Release page before getting to the link to the story.

The more links one has to go through before seeing the link to a story, the less circulation the story is going to get, and the less people are going to be aware that there is a story to read or hear.

I see that HMAS Warramunga has set out for the middle east to relieve HMAS Newcastle.
The farewell picture shows that she is leaving with no harpoons on their launch cradles.
This is the first time that I have noticed this absence for a ship heading for the middle east.

Warramunga certainly picked up a full set on route to the ME. Today's Navy Daily shows her with 8 Harpoon canisters while exercising with the Indian Navy near Goa.

In the words of the legendary Sergeant Schultz..I know nusink. The link you refer to is a Spanish news link but I haven't googled Navantia. My contribution over there was the original RAN twitter feed.

Thanks. I thought it may have been provided by Navantia. Interesting forum and it is good to have some coverage on the Supply.

The release,on the Alliance website only appeared after 1730 Central time, well after we started this discussion.

they have been consistently tardy with their news and their website is very poor and has not improved over the construction cycle even after many complaints online including one from me.
Keeping their paymasters informed, you and I, does not rate highly on their agenda despite the public interest.

I have a (probably stupid) question:

By now, everyone here should have known the news about the Argentinian submarine. If we are going to expand our undersea fleet, and potentially a 2 Ocean sub fleet, should we expand our undersea search & rescue capability, ideally a vessel on each coast?

IIRC, submarine rescue systems are mobile enough to be air lifted to a suitable ship that is capable of deploying it. I would think such vessels are likely available on both coasts. As for the search function, P-8s and frigates can help out and hopefully any sub in trouble is able to make some noise to make detection easier.

OPV decision

ABC News just released an article about the OPV decision, and it looks like the fight is getting dirty.

abc.net.au/news/2017-11-21/defence-firms-compete-for-billion-dollar-ships-contract/9173796?pfmredir=sm]Vicious contest as defence firms compete for multi-billion-dollar ships contract - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
(Sorry, still can’t post links yet)

The article also states that we should be getting a decision next week.

Yea, saw some of these comments in the West Australian, and also a full page advert. The impression now given by Austal is that they are desperate for the OPV work. I rather Civmec/Forgacs win the work and set up a competing shipbuilding site in WA.

As for the Sea5000? Would RAN/DoD they ever consider a split buy, eg. 3x Navatia F5000 and 6xType 26? I would assume that the F5000 would be a much lower hanging fruit to get up and going and there could be huge synergy with the existing AWD. Naturally, the combat system, gensets and even diesel engines on both F5000 and the Type 23 should/would be identical.

Then again VA Tim Barrett might not be too keen on having too many different "types" in RAN.

I seriously doubt there would be any interest in a split buy. It has no benefits for a significant increase in costs and a reduction in flexibility. The best result would be a continuation and further development of the Hobart class ships. Keeping things common has great cost benefits.

I assume you mean the type 26 frigate.
